Face products so constantly bombard us; it’s hard to discern what is good for your face and what isn’t. It’s easy to go to the store and just pick the bottle that looks the best to you and hope for the best. We may even see others with beautiful, clear complexions and believe that we could also have clear skin too if we tried products they use.

Yet when we try it, our results are not the same. It can be frustrating sometimes, but keep in mind that all skin is not equal. To help you out I’ve listed the various types as well as some helpful tips to manage them…

Black Soap and Shea Butter. The end :)

I was hoping some information would be offered on how to deal with hyperpigmentation. I know a lot of black women would benefit from that because we seem to have the hardest time with skin discoloration.

I’ve given up on most commercially prepared products to care for my oily/acne-prone skin. They rarely work as well as they claim, and they’re too expensive. The best moisturizer I’ve used is the one I made myself: 1 part glycerin to 2 parts water. I put it in a spray bottle with a few drops of tea tree oil to discourage mold. The tea tree oil is also good for my acne. I mist *very* lightly after washing and drying my face. It’s easy to make, cheap, and it works for me.

For my acne, I use hydrogen peroxide to tone, and an aspirin mask a couple times a week. I’ve actually had somewhat decent results. Not a miracle cure mind you, but I have stubborn acne and the OTC stuff wasn’t doing anything for me.

The only products I still buy are sunblock and Neutrogena bar soap to wash. I prefer bar soaps to cleanse with, so I will probably stick with that.

I thought hydrogen peroxide made marks darker?

      • Papillon

I’ve never heard that and if it’s true I haven’t experienced it. Hydrogen peroxide is actually a bleaching agent, that’s why it’s in toothpastes to help remove stains on teeth. It will bleach hair over time so you have to be careful using it around your hairline and eyebrows. Some claim that it can bleach skin but I’ve never had that happen.

Maybe you are thinking of benzoyl peroxide? That does make my skin darker and also dull which is why I switched to hydrogen peroxide.

The models in these slides have gorgeous skin! Especially the last one. Anyway, I went natural with face products a few years ago, then organic, now I’m doing a combination of natural, homemade, and organic. I am currently doing the oil cleansing method at night and organic tea tree oil + warm water (then cool water) in the morning. My face purged quite a bit with horrible breakouts during the second week of doing OCM, now my face calming down in my third week of doing OCM and I hope it only goes uphill from there. I have extremely oily skin and large, unsightly pores and I’ve tried tons of treatments and products. OCM has been cost-effective for me so far, so heres to hoping it works for good this time! I will know in about a month or two…
