Nia Speaks On The Infamous Basketball Wives Slap: ‘That’s a Normal Reaction of Mine’

We’ve heard from just about everyone involved in the infamous “Basketball Wives” slap that sent viewers into a fury and VH1, Shed Media, and the cast members into a frenzy, except for the one who did the slapping, Nia Crooks.

Nia really should have been the non-m-effing factor in this season of the series considering she only had about a total of 15 minutes on camera from the two episodes she’s appeared in, but her actions in that short amount time have made her one of the major focuses of the entire brand, and VH1 caught up with her during the reunion special to get her take on how things have panned out from her point of view. Here’s what she said:

What’s life been like for you since you appeared on the show?

Hell. I could never imagine being in this predicament over something like that. And a person that I used to love is now just somebody I knew. It’s hell.

Have people been mean, how have you been treated?

Yeah, they don’t know me and I get that, I’m part of this story, but I’m just a person that walked in a room and sat down and said something to a person and got up and smacked her. So it looks like I’m bullying someone who welcomed the smack. She said “I wish you would.” She cut the conversation off because she doesn’t want anyone to know wh she really is. She’s a total different person outside of this. Being a celebrity is not for everyone, some people’s heads get inflated, some don’t. And if you have new people around you in your life, and it’s not the people you’ve been around forever, that says a lot about a person.

If you could do this over, would you have never appeared on the show?

I just wish my reaction wouldn’t have been that. I can’t take that back now, but that’s the way I was raised, that’s how I grew up, that’s a normal reaction of mine.

At the end of the interview, Evelyn interjected to share her thoughts on her assistant/friend and said:

“Can I just say I have known Nia for years, and I have never in all those years seen Nia cry — you know I cry at the drop of a hat — and ever since all the negativity and the lawyers and everything, I have never seen her cry like this until now and it’s tough. Nothing can ever prepare you for being in public and having a million people have an opinion about you on a daily basis. She’s just been thrown into this.”

What Evelyn neglected to mention was Nia threw herself into that when she threw her hand on Jen’s face but I imagine she’s learned that lesson by now. I’m curious if Nia being at the reunion special means she’ll actually appear on-camera. From the sneak peek of part two airing tonight you can’t tell but we do see Jen and Evelyn at least get into the details of the case.

Check out the preview clip here. What do you think about Nia’s reaction to this entire case?

Nia you were on “camera” and you slapped Jen. Stupid, stupid, stupid. You do not have a leg to stand on plus no money . What were you thinking???? smh maybe Shaunie and Ev can pay but you have to do the time. hmmmm

  • Sookiiee

a natural reaction huh so what about that wig was that just a spur of the moment type thing or what lol

  • Should be ashamed

And it should be a normal reaction when Jennifer went to the police. and it shoud be a normal reaction when you tell that to the judge, and it should be a normal reaction when he hands down whatever punishment to you. and it should be a normal reaction for you to ask evelyn lozada,Shaunie o’Neal and Tami roman to help out, since they egg you on.

  • annie b

nia you just do not put your hands on nobody, simple lady what was you trying to accomplish by doing that, grl you have a lot of nerve.

  • Lisa

These women are ignorant and uncultured. If you’re going to act like a wild animal to gain viewers, then accept the good and the bad. Don’t play the remorseful victim when people are appalled by your behavior.

  • IllyPhilly

So is that bad wig. Who’s assistant is is she? That person needed to be smacked.

  • sammi_lu

She is dumb for even appearing on the reunion..I’m sure her lack of remorse shown will brought up in court, silly of her for thinking she was anything more than a tool/pawn of Evelyn’s when she appeared on the show to begin with.

  • Numero Uno

Nia is getting exactly what she deserves. Nuff said.

  • NaturalJem

Whatever at her comment “…that’s how I grew up, that’s a normal reaction of mine”… If it was her boss, pastor, parent, elder family member or a child she wouldn’t have reacted like that. She was hype that she had some TV time and fed off of Evelyn, Tami & Shaunie’s issue with Jen so she decided to be a thug, walk around the table & slap her in the face….shame on you Nia!!!!

  • Shol nuff

How ratchet…. That’s the way she handles things huh???? Ok let her take her bad wig wearin azz into a place of business or up to Anyone she DOESN’T KNOW and go smacking people in the face… And she will get the same reaction: A LAWSUIT!!! U can’t go around smacking people and then say it was the way u were brought up…. THAT DOESN’T MAKE IT OK!!! Who lets these rats make these statements vh1 does more of a disservice to themselves because that Right there made NO SENSE!!! And they want to then cry about public opinion yet u knew there are cameras Rollin. And chose to act that way!!! I have no sympath this bum wants a place on the show…. And I hope it gets cancelled!!!

  • This is me

This was THE only episode of this show that I saw because I just happened to be in the room when someone else was watching it. And I will say this, if that is a natural reaction for someone, then that someone lacks self respect, maturity and rational thought. AND it makes those who raised her look bad. To say “that is how I was I raised” shows that she was raised in a sad violent environment. Because adults have conversations to work through problems.

This foolishness of a wedding will not last.

  • Truthsayer

I’m sorry, since I know a lot of you are Jen sympathizers, but I think that from all the episodes that I have seen Jen has changed. I am not saying that she should be slapped or that these women don’t behave badly but Jen is not totally innocent in all of this.

    • Jennifer

      Agreed…

    • Baddvixentype

I dont really worry about the topic but it doesnt matter how much someones changed. no one has the right to put their hands on you. The negative attention Ms. Crooks (ironic) is getting is well deserved. She should pay. keep ya hands to yaself.

    • wveronica7

True, we all change at some point. However, you can’t get upset if someone doesn’t want to be your friend anymore. This is not the playground, you keep it moving. It is their reactions that has cast them in a dimmer light than Jennifer. You can’t bully and harass someone continuously after you two have agreed to not be friends. I also feel that she should not have done the lie detector test. VH1 has their own issues with her and I think its shady

      • Yvette

        well said!

    • guest1

I think you’re starting to believe exactly what the others want you too, now that’s what I call good brainwashing media.

      • Puleeesee

What do they want us to believe… Better yet what do uu want us to believe that smacking people in the face is OK???

    • Have several seats

Who gives a fk if she has changed!?? U know what I do to people who are not my friend anymore?? I stop Talkin to they azz and delete
They number… U get mad and go smack everyone who starts acting different to u in a friendship??? If all someone has done is ignore u ten u move the hell on, u don’t fight them because of it… Childish azz people!!!
