She Went Deep: Lauryn Responds To Tax Evasion Charges With Lengthy Letter About Her Absence

June 8th, 2012 - By Marissa Ellis

After it was reported yesterday that Lauryn Hill was facing serious tax evasion charges for failing to report her income to the IRS between 2005-2007, Ms. Hill took to her Tumblr to issue a statement about the unfortunate matter. Even though the Tumblr account looks like it could be fake, the official Twitter account of Lauryn linked directly to the statements which makes it credible.

Hill goes into length as to why she had to distance herself and her family from “society.” In fact, the statement delivers the kind of explanation that Hill has been communicating via scant interviews and her Unplugged album after she distanced herself from the music industry in 2000. Although L Boogie explains in this letter that she was in communication with the IRS about her situation, much of her statement delves into demystifying her absence from the music scene. It’s a letter to her fans in essence. Peep it in its entirety below:

“For the past several years, I have remained what others would consider underground.  I did this in order to build a community of people, like-minded in their desire for freedom and the right to pursue their goals and lives without being manipulated and controlled by a media protected military industrial complex with a completely different agenda.  Having put the lives and needs of other people before my own for multiple years, and having made hundreds of millions of dollars for certain institutions, under complex and sometimes severe circumstances, I began to require growth and more equitable treatment, but was met with resistance.  I entered into my craft full of optimism (which I still possess), but immediately saw the suppressive force with which the system attempts to maintain it’s control over a given paradigm.  I’ve seen people promote addiction, use sabotage, black listing, media bullying and any other coercion technique they could, to prevent artists from knowing their true value, or exercising their full power.  These devices of control, no matter how well intentioned (or not), can have a devastating outcome on the lives of people, especially creative types who must grow and exist within a certain environment and according to a certain pace, in order to live and create optimally.

I kept my life relatively simple, even after huge successes, but it became increasingly obvious that certain indulgences and privileges were expected to come at the expense of my free soul, free mind, and therefore my health and integrity. So I left a more mainstream and public life, in order to wean both myself, and my family, away from a lifestyle that required distortion and compromise as a means for maintaining it.  During this critical healing time, there were very few people accessible to me who had not already been seduced or affected by this machine, and therefore who could be trusted to not try and influence or coerce me back into a dynamic of compromise. Individual growth was expected to take place unnaturally, or stagnated outright, subject to marketing and politics.  Addressing critical issues like pop culture cannibalism or its manipulation of the young at the expense of everything, was frowned upon and discouraged by limiting funding, or denying it outright.  When one has a prolific creative output like I did/do, and is then forced to stop, the effects can be dangerous both emotionally and psychologically, both for the artist and those in need of that resource.  It was critically important that I find a suitable pathway within which to exist, without being distorted or economically strong-armed.

During this period of crisis, much was said about me, both slanted and inaccurate, by those who had become dependent on my creative force, yet unwilling to fully acknowledge the importance of my contribution, nor compensate me equitably for it.  This was done in an effort to smear my public image, in order to directly affect my ability to earn independently of this system.  It took a long time to locate and nurture a community of people strong enough to resist the incredibly unhealthy tide, and more importantly see through it.  If I had not been able to make contact with, and establish this community, my life, safety and freedom, would have been directly affected as well as the lives, safety and freedom of my family.  Failure to create a non toxic, non exploitative environment was not an option.

As my potential to work, and therefore earn freely, was being threatened, I did whatever needed to be done in order to insulate my family from the climate of hostility, false entitlement, manipulation, racial prejudice, sexism and ageism that I was surrounded by.  This was absolutely critical while trying to find and establish a new and very necessary community of healthy people, and also heal and detoxify myself and my family while raising my young children.

There were no exotic trips, no fleet of cars, just an all out war for safety, integrity, wholeness and health, without mistreatment denial, and/or exploitation.  In order to liberate myself from those who found it ok to oppose my wholeness, free speech and integral growth by inflicting different forms of punitive action against it, I used my resources to sustain our safety and survival until I was able to restore my ability to earn outside of it!

When artists experience danger and crisis under the effects of this kind of insidious manipulation, everyone easily accepts that there was something either dysfunctional or defective with the artist, rather than look at, and fully examine, the system and its means and policies of exploiting/’doing business’.  Not only is this unrealistic, it is very dark in its motivation, conveniently targeting the object of their hero worship by removing any evidence that they ‘needed’ or celebrated this very same resource just years, months or moments before.  Since those who believe they need a hero/celebrity outnumber the actual heroes/celebrities, people feel safe and comfortably justified in numbers, committing egregious crimes in the name of the greater social ego.  Ironically diminishing their own true hero-celebrity nature in the process.

It was this schism and the hypocrisy, violence and social cannibalism it enabled, that I wanted and needed to be freed from, not from art or music, but the suppression/repression and reduction of that art and music to a bottom line alone, without regard for anything else.  Over-commercialization and its resulting restrictions and limitations can be very damaging and distorting to the inherent nature of the individual.  I Love making art, I Love making music, these are as natural and necessary for me almost as breathing or talking.  To be denied the right to pursue it according to my ability, as well as be properly acknowledged and compensated for it, in an attempt to control, is manipulation directed at my most basic rights!  These forms of expression, along with others, effectively comprise my free speech!  Defending, preserving, and protecting these rights are critically important, especially in a paradigm where veiled racism, sexism, ageism, nepotism, and deliberate economic control are still blatant realities!!!

Learning from the past, insulating friends and family from the influence of external manipulation and corruption, is far more important to me than being misunderstood for a season!  I did not deliberately abandon my fans, nor did I deliberately abandon any responsibilities, but I did however put my safety, health and freedom and the freedom, safety and health of my family first over all other material concerns!  I also embraced my right to resist a system intentionally opposing my right to whole and integral survival.

I conveyed all of this when questioned as to why I did not file taxes during this time period.  Obviously, the danger I faced was not accepted as reasonable grounds for deferring my tax payments, as authorities, who despite being told all of this, still chose to pursue action against me, as opposed to finding an alternative solution.

My intention has always been to get this situation rectified.  When I was working consistently without being affected by the interferences mentioned above, I filed and paid my taxes.  This only stopped when it was necessary to withdraw from society, in order to guarantee the safety and well-being of myself and my family.

As this, and other areas of issue are resolved and set straight, I am able to get back to doing what I should be doing, the way it should be done.  This is part of that process.  To those supporters who were told that I abandoned them, that is untrue.  I abandoned greed, corruption, and compromise, never you, and never the artistic gifts and abilities that sustained me.”

No excuse for not paying taxes, but I also understand where she’s coming from regarding the entertainment industry. However, the letter also show some emotional/mental instability. Distorted spirituality is misleading, and the importance of good therapy/counseling is overlooked which is often times what is needed to get you into that balanced healthy frame of mind. I hope she seeks professional help. I wish her the best.

  • Tiffany

    This is the most articulate
and coherent I’ve heard/read Lauryn in quite some time. I agree with her
100%, I think she should pay her taxes (I have to pay mine) but I think
that listeners and record execs are so closed minded they do not allow
artist to grow and when an artist resist this shackling they are labeled
as crazy the nature of art is to grow and expand it is the exploration
of the human condition it cannot remain stagnant. Now that she finally
seems lucid I’m looking forward to seeing where Lauryn’s growth has taken
    her

Excellent letter! And to the responders who think they know it all and trying to question syill why she didn’t pay her taxes. You are blind and most ignorant. She explains that she’s been trying to get issue resolved with IRS. All the iII’s she spoke of in the industry are very true and the same weeds that choke the life out of people, now the strongest weed (The IRS) is the industries last attempt to defame Lauryn. American citizens need to wake up! The biggest question is Lauryn legally suppose to even pay taxes. Ask yourself why is it that so many so called Tax attorneys ar ex IRS agents? How is it these so called lawyers can work to get payments reduced from big payments to drastic reductions? 1 simple answer these ex agents have leverage over the IRS and are privy to information that the public is blind too. If you want some enlightenment before you bash or comment anymore check out a documentary ( free on you tube or you can buy DVD to educate family and friends) called ” America Freedom To Facism”. I doubt after you watch this you will ever look down on Lauryn, Wesley and any other who’s life has been destroyed by the IRS. Americans get back to learning our constitutional rights before they disappear!

    • Excepcion

Do you pay your taxes ? .. ill wait. If she made money on the grid then she needs to pay her dues like the rest of us.The term enlightenment is relative to the context in which its being used. She is no more enlightened or aware than the next man and that does not at all justify tax evasion.. If you re read her words carefully.. she states:

” ..My intention has always been to get this situation rectified… I FILED AND PAID MY TAXES. This only stopped when it
was… necessary to withdraw from society…”

Just because she was no longer being paid or compensated for what she thought she was worth .. she was given a reality check that she did not want to face. She all along had been a participant in her own demise. Where was this thought process amidst her making mills with the Fugees and her solo albums. She seemed not to have a problem with it then ? .. Only when her cash flow was slow..she then decided to be “protective” of her family from the “cannibalism” and “manipulation” of the industry. She’s crying wolf.

I’ll never understand how some artists (Lauryn Hill) can do no wrong…ever. She could kill somebody and ya’ll would still defend her. While other artists (Nicki) can’t even breathe too hard with out upsetting the masses.

    • ReR

Nicki lacks the artistic originality and depth that Lauryn has. I do agree that there’s some level of paranoia (after reading Lauryn’s letter), but she still in the most purist sense is a true artist. She doesn’t need animation or gimmicks to appeal to the masses. She just has to open her mouth…for that reason alone, she gets many passes over Nicki…the two aren’t even comparable creatively…fine wine versus grade koolaide.

      • Merriegirl

As you prove my point. You don’t know Lauryn Hill’s character any more than you know Nicki’s. Lauryn is a public figure not a friend that you have spent quality time with yet you defend her like you gave birth to her. Every artist/public figure is a package that is made up by a team of people to be sold to the public. & you buy in Lauryn’s perfect image even clearly has flaws, as Nicki has flaws as well.

  • Leanita

So beautifully expressed, so, so deep in her description of a monster-machine that masquerades itself as a ‘music’ ‘industry’. What a woman; still have that solo album on heavy rotation. Bless up, Ms Hill.

  • GRBpillman

Shondella, u hit the nail in the wall, some of these comments that are below yours is proof that folk live in this Euro created paradigm, matrical system to hold folks back like believing that they have to pay the ILLEAGAL IRS/FEDERAL RESERVE PRIVATE BANKING SYSTEM. They want a explaination on why she didn’t pay these criminals who still steal all working folks income after WW1….

    • sweettea

If you don’t want to pay your taxes you better have an excellent lawyer.

      • MLS2698

        Right?

  • Just saying!!

Love Lauryn! She stays going in on the industry lol (killuminati!!). Not to mention she’s WAY more articulate than the majority of these pop celebrities these days. Although I’m still not sure I understand why she didn’t pay taxes…still love her though. Her music was good AND said something…something I appreciate as an artist!!!

  • Miss Ghana

I love Lauren Hill, but i believe that she is coming back because of her relationship breakdown with Rohan. It sounds like she has been spoon fed all these things until she could not reason for herself. Sure there are things in the industry that are bad, but to withdraw completely and ‘create a community’? Taxes still need to be paid regardless. I really hope she sorts things out because she is one the the few naturally talented artists out there. Cannot wait for a new album if she makes one.

  • Konata

Yeah, sorry folks but this rambling rather vague letter doesn’t really explain why she didn’t file her taxes. Does she literally mean her life was in danger? She seems to identify a lot of poorly identified enemies. She uses big words like “paradigm” and “military industrial complex” and not always correctly. I read this as the musings of someone who is mentally ill. Not crazy, just in need of real professional help. Instead she’s embraced all sorts of questionable spiritual advisors and created a “community” (consisting of who?) that seems to reinforce her paranoia. She makes valid points about commercialism and exploitation, but many artists have found ways to negotiate that system without totally withdrawing from society. Bob Marley is just one example. Anyway, none of this really explains why she didn’t file taxes. She could have done that through the mail!

    • luverly

I’ll cosign on this. I love Lauryn but what does this have to do with failing to pay her taxes? You can be as enlightened as you want but you are an American citizen and not immune to filing and paying taxes on your earnings. Come on folks.

    • anonymous

Ever heard of Michael Jackson? His death was intentional, killed by the forces that Lauryn accurately ran and hid from. To file taxes would be to publicly acknowledge where you are hiding yourself and children in refuge. Ever heard of Dave Chapelle? the industry paints you as crazy, delusional when you begin to spread the message of what’s really going on. Your precious government and IRS are not what meets the surface, and its alot deeper than the average person gets taught in HIstory class.

Love her, love her, love her, true image of real black beauty, theres nothing waterd down are artificial about that women…. =~) don’t hate on the women, cause what have u accomplished????

This is a super intelligent woman after my own heart! It takes a lot of guts to do what she did. I’m so proud of her for standing up to a corrupt and vile system that time and time again robs the artists with talent and leaves them broke and dependent striped of their dignity. The industry execs only talent is to con the artists out of the wealth which is rightfully due to the very artists who entertain us with their gifts.

  • http://www.facebook.com/shondella.jones Shondella Jones

Reading the negatives responses here are proof positive that reading is not fundamental. Comprehension and the ability to make inferences are at a low, even within the adult populous smh….

  • MLS2698

M’Kay, you still gotta pay yo taxes even if you withdraw from society.

  • http://twitter.com/VADIVA30 VADIVA30

The entertainment business has always been a source of debauchery so what is her point?! She has been in it since a teen and now that she is being threatened to go to jail for not paying taxes on all the millions she has made, all of a sudden the business that has been her bread and butter for years is ‘the devil’. Well Lauryn Hill sold her soul to the devil now she realizes the devil is a liar. If she cares so much about music she could have finished college with a music degree and taught the future artist the ‘true meaning’ of being an artist without the need for the excess of the ‘industry’. God Bless her but too many artist in the industry are delusional and that includes Lauryn HIll. I hope she gets it together.

    • brandy

I agree. Why then is she still apart of the industry? Why don’t she just disassociate herself from the so called pressuring industry all together. To me this letter is just something to distract from her IRS issue. Funny this letter didn’t address why she didn’t pay her taxes.

    • MLS2698

I don’t know if she sold her soul to the Devil, or Rohan.

  • KLYNN

It takes a real woman to be able to think for herself. God bless you lauryn.

I did miss you and your music and while I’m not in the entertainment business I know EXACTALLY what you speak of my sista!!!!! I wish we had more sista in the field as strong as you. I admire you, do what is necessary for your mental health, spiritual well being and family first, my hat off to you!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ConsciousBarbi

    I Love Lauryn….

  • bluekissess

That was beautiful. The way she articulates her words draws me in. If she never does another album is OK with me. I would enjoy reading her writings. Hollywood is a drug and once you get sucked in it, it’s done. I’m glad she left on her own terms and not the terms of others.

If VH1 has women like Ms Hill I would definitely watch and listen

    • Nat

Please stop with this Nonsense. The woman made a great album 15 years ago and has been incoherent ever since. This letter is pure drivel. My hope is that she is sane enough to allow her lawyers do all of the talking
