All Grown Up and In Trouble: ‘Hughleys’ Child Star Charged With Murder

Dee Jay Daniels is clearly not the little 9-year-old we remember as Michael Hughley on D.L. Hughley’s late ’90s sitcom. At 23 years old, Dee Jay is currently facing charges of street terrorism, premeditated murder and attempted premeditated murder stemming from gang activity in California.

Dee Jay, whose full name is Dorjan Lyndell Daniels, is a suspected member of the Bloods gang, and in August 2011, he and two other men allegedly stabbed 26-year-old John Joseph outside a nightclub in Stockton, CA. The attack was expected to be a rival altercation between the Bloods and the Crips.

Arrest records show Dee Jay is being held without bail in San Joaquin County Jail and he has been ever since August 6, the afternoon after the attack. Dee Jay’s next court date is tomorrow at 8:30 am but with a charge like this it doesn’t appear he’ll be going anywhere anytime soon. Who would’ve thought Michael Hughley would grow into this?

Here’s a news report from when the attack first happened last summer.

Omg and wtf. I need for some of you to stop making excuses for a man who had a very strong opportunity to live a successful, crime- free life. He knew what he was doing when he did it.

  • Miss D

I understand that life is hard….but you always have a choice to do what is right. There are people out there who are doing more with less than what you have, so take accountability for your actions. If you don’t want to be in trouble with the law, follow the rules and learn to deal with conflict in a civil manner (and by no means am I claiming that the justice system is foolproof). Sorry, but I don’t have sympathy for people like him.

It’s interesting that we don’t consider gangs terrorist groups although they they assume ‘ownership’ of people’s neighborhoods and kill innocent people every day. Even if Daniels is not guilty, being in a gang is not going to help his cause. Hope he learns from his mistakes.

Gangs ARE terrorists. They should be treated as such.

      • ThePeopleofDetroit

Terrorism is violence committed to further a social agenda. That social agenda is what makes terrorism different from other kinds of violence. Gangs have no social agenda. They are not terrorists.

    • ThePeopleofDetroit

      Miss D. Well said.

Since when is stabbing a guy in a bar fight “street terrorism”? Is that a charge they invented to give Black men a life sentence for a crime a White defendant would get Second Degree Murder and 25 years for?

    • MLS2698

Yeah, if that’s the case, they should charge school bullies with the same thing.

Exactly’ this has been going on for years, and when did the government start to care if their was a fight or killing in the clubs or streets- this is just for media, so tired of the foolery lead by laws officials!!!!

    • ThePeopleofDetroit

Yes, it was invented by the White Devil to keep the Nubian Kings of Africa down!

Are you really playing the race card here? Wow…

  • Treacle234

Poor guy, guess he’s another child star that didn’t break the cycle.

    • Tw128

Yes…poor little actor. He had to seek out gang life. Cry me a river!

  • IllyPhilly

    • thetruthdotcom

Parents?? You mean, what did mom do with his money. Because Im sure dad wasnt around.

      • IllyPhilly

Who knows? That’s just a crazy story right there.

      • Tagirl

There are gang members that come from 2 parent homes. It may not be the norm but it happens.

  • RedButterfly81

Awww, I liked the cute little boy from The Hugleys, now he looks like a straight up hood nicca!

  • bluekissess

The gang life can make you look old. I can’t believe he’s 23. He looks 43. Gangs are so stupid

    • Ladybug94

Yeah they are stupid but when you don’ have a proper father figure or family structure, you go looking for that elsewhere and gangs are quick to offer that “family” life that alot of young men are looking for.

      • MLS2698

Do you think maybe he felt rejected after not finding another job on TV, then turned to gangs?

      • ThePeopleofDetroit

Funny how eager some people are to make excuses for criminal behavior. Let you or a loved one get shot in a gang-related drive by and tell me how much you care about if a gangmember’s daddy played catch with him or not when he was a kid.

I know they say a lot of child stars grow up to be troubled, but WOW!! Very sad indeed!
