Well, Hiya To You! Shouting Out Some Of Our Favorite Black Imports From Britain

June 5th, 2012 - By Marissa Ellis

Although the U.S. goes crazy for British celebs like Kate Winslet, Keira Knightley and Kate Middleton, many folks forget that there are Black celebs also representing for the Queen. Britain is one of the most diverse countries in the world: everyone from Eastern Europe to India to Senegal represents in that country.  There is a pronounced Black presence in the U.K, mainly represented by West Indians and Nigerians. Nowhere is this fact more clear than the Black celebs who represent for their secondary motherland. Check out a few of our favorite British imports:

Idris Elba

Surprised anyone? Of course you’re not. What more can we say about this image of perfection. He’s hot, he’s masculine, he’s talented and he’s got a killer American accent (hey, that accent is the reason we get to see so much of his fine self on our American tubes). Although it’s not easy to feign a consistent accent when it comes to playing people across the pond (and vice versa), Elba pulled a fast one over us when he played the subdued yet diligent Stringer Bell on HBO’s The Wire. Elba hasn’t looked back since.

  • Veratta Pegram-Floyd

I don’t care what strides she has made, I don’t have respect for people who throw temper tantrums and through phones at their assistants….

  • Just Sayin…

What about Zadie Smith? Definitely my favorite literary import from across the pond.

  • Tagirl

You all forgot Corinne Bailey Rae, Leona Lewis and Estelle. 3 great talents. The UK has great talents all across the board in music.

  • Buttacheddar04

New kid but he a British Nigerian JOHN BOYEGA

  • Chanda

Naomi Campbell is indeed in that Bob Marley video but you have to have a good eye to spot her. She was also in Culture Club’s video I’ll Tumble 4 Ya, the girl with the white beads in her hair.

  • Chanda

This list could’ve been much longer. No Soul II Soul, Estelle, or Loose Ends? I suppose you’ll come up with the music list soon on British Soul artists/bands. I could come up with a loooonnng list on that alone. The Brits make some of the best soul music ever, they don’t care about trends and charts as much. My goodness!

    • FromUR2UB

Yeah, the music that has come out of Great Britain has had a really nice groove.

  • FromUR2UB

I realize this is reaching way back, but the band ‘Loose Ends’ was cool.

  • Lisa

Freema Agyeman. She’s in the Carrie Diaries and also Law & Order: UK.
