Gwyneth Paltrow Thinks She’s a N*gga In Paris For Real, Twitterverse Does Not Agree

June 4th, 2012 - By Brande Victorian

It’s never a dull moment when Kanye and Jay-Z hit the stage to perform N*ggas in Paris. Over the weekend, they kicked off their Watch the Throne Tour in the French capital and since they were self-described n*ggas in Paris, they performed the hit song a record 11 times. Somewhere in the midst of all that, Gwyneth Paltrow, who attended the concert with Beyonce, Kelly Rowland, and the Dream, was feeling the energy and sent out a tweet with the picture above of her on stage saying:

And that’s when the beat dropped a bit. Blogger B. Scott picked up on Gwyneth’s tweet and retweeted it asking if it was OK or not, to which the actress responded:

I was surprised this was even up for discussion considering she didn’t exactly just throw the n-word out there without asterisks, but I think it’s the “for real” part that made some people say hold up, did she just call Jay and Ye n*ggas? The Dream came to the actresses defense quickly on Twitter saying:

“N[*]gga doesn’t have any power over me which is why this will be the last thing I say about it. A word means something when u react to it! Context is everything. Meaning it in the context as a Song which is how we Sold it to the world!!!!!! it is what it is. I’ve seen people not use the Word at all and have been the most racist people rather than use it in the context as the song it self. And Actually N[*]ggaz was in Paris! Lol stop wasting gods time Do something with your life! Love not War.”

Regardless of whether Gwyn got too caught up in the hype or not, I blame Jay and Kanye for this. The title of this song and it’s crossover appeal was just asking for this type of nonstop n-word controversy foolishness.

Do you think Gwyneth was in the wrong or are people overreacting?

Black people, c’mon now. We sound so confusing, and that’s the reason white people are so confused too. If we tell other group not to use it, but we call each other that, use it in songs, when white people also listen to these songs, we are bringing it upon ourselves. Rappers are adamant not to stop using it, so what’s the big deal. It’s the title of a song.

  • Candacey Doris

It’s the name of the song. I hardly think she’s racist. She didn’t even tweet the word, just the title WITH asterisks. Please people, move on to real news.

    • bluekissess

Ignore is bliss. The * made a difference. Make sure people use an asterisk when calling you the b word so you won’t get so angry

  • Anon

I don’t see why people can’t wrap their mind behind the rules of the word. Point blank period, if you’re not black then don’t use it. Its simple. No you can’t use it in jest, or as a term of endearment. Don’t sing it, rap it, speak it, h*ll don’t even hum the mf’er if you’re not black/of African descent. And for all you smarty pants that will say “well we’re all of African descent” you know exactly what I mean by my previous remarks. All those that are melanin challenged and that don’t identify with African ancestry in any way, are banned from using the word.

    • JaneDoe

I agree with you and those were my exact thoughts.. Just don’t use it…

“I don’t see why people can’t wrap their mind behind the rules of the
word. Point blank period, if you’re not black then don’t use it”

I’m sorry, we don’t get that kind of arbitrary power when our own entertainers have brought that word along with a stereotypical portrayal to every country on earth for the past 30 years.

LOL, you can’t expect people NOT to say it when you are getting RICH off selling it to them. It’s as easy and simple as that. One reason I don’t buy that kind of music or listen to it anymore. I’ve had to correct people around me (Black & Non-Black) who think it’s okay to just casually throw that around in my presence. Sorry, its not. Do it at the concert or with your other Black friends, but personally, don’t curse around me. Just like I don’t want to have the F word all up in my space either.

  • Tallchiick

Its simply a word to me now…I’m sure she meant no harm…

  • http://twitter.com/gennatay RoGina

The fact that this is even up for discussion is just wrong. Its the name of a song. a really hot song IMO. I agree entirely with the Dream on this one, stop giving the word meaning and it will become meaningless.

  • cocochanel31

she should not have tweeted that period..a simple text to her friend the Dream would have erased all confusion..smh ..ignorance has no bounds…

  • Pivyque

It is the name of the song. People need to get over it.

  • Samantha Rodriguez

These comments on here are more racist than Gwyneth’s tweet..lol

  • Tosh

Why do black folks have to make white folks prove they are not racist?? So you can’t be black and not like blacks?!?!?!? This ish is really crazy! And personally I feel like like this, racism is a lifestyle not a tweet. If Gywn is racist she is not living life right around all those black folks! LOL Which I do not think is the case…We need to wake up to what real racism is folks!

Sometimes I wish social media was never created. It really is the opportunity for people to use words “for” stupidity and against “foolishness”. The Bible speaks of controlling the tongue (James Chpt. 3, just in case you wanna read it for yourself) …well some of these social media bullies and banter experts need to control their thumbs!

  • MLS2698

White folk with black friends need to tread lightly with this one. If there is confusion, just stand there and smile, wait for your black friends to finish. Don”t ever, ever, ever join in. This is all in the “real ni88a” handbook for white folk rules.

    • JaneDoe

No Jay, ye, and the whole clique thinks its kool b/c they have Gwyneth singing along to thier stupid song.. Sad state of mind we are in.

  • TRUTH

Bey damn well look niggahless and more pale…smh

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/FTHIDMNTLTJAIILXEWRQ3UADBY StephanieR

The word just needs to be banned! I don’t like when my own says it and I definitely do not like when others say it! My people we need to do better and stop using such an ugly word, because if we use it, they will think it’s ok to use it as well…smh

    • tiredofthebs

“My people we need to do better and stop using such an ugly word, because if we use it, they will think it’s ok to use it as well” I completely disagree with this part, as I stated below: other races call each other negative words to describe themselves. We still get the message that if we are not apart of that group, we don’t say the word. The same way gay men call each other the f word, I know for sure that, that is not something that they like non-gay men calling them.
We are so quick to be politically correct, and blame ourselves, that some will let Gwenyth Paltrow get a pass regardless of how she used it. It’s disgusting that we blame ourselves for everything to the extent that we don’t acknowledge that, that word as negative as it maybe is something that no one should use, especially a non-Black person.

  • leah

You know. Aside and away from all of this mess, I think that Gwenyth Paltrow is a classy, beautiful woman. But I have to say I really hate when these white people who would never hang out with black people all of a sudden find some rich blacks in hollywood to hang out with to get the “black experience”. That is the way I see Kim Kardashian also. She only hangs out with rich, black girls otherwise she would not want to be bothered. I would not feel comfortable with those types. Some of these rich black people are just happen to hang out with them and actually think that they are “down”. I just dont trust them.

    • pfeiffer87

‘ I really hate when these white people who would never hang out with
black people all of a sudden find some rich blacks in hollywood to hang
out with to get the “black experience”.’ And you know this about Gwyneth Paltrow how?? Who are you to say who would and who wouldn’t hang out with ‘black folks’? People are people, we all have friends who are people: black white yellow brown blue. PEOPLE.

    • awet

      beautiful though?

    • http://twitter.com/gennatay RoGina

People hang with people who are more like them. In this case, rich entertainers hanging with other rich entertainers. It really is THAT SIMPLE

    • Chanda

People have the right to hang out with whoever they like. Is Kim K suppose to hang out in poor black neighborhoods? That’s not what she comes from so it wouldn’t make sense.
A lot of these (rich) celebrities have similar lifestyles or hang in the same circles so what does their race have to do with anything? You wouldn’t feel comfortable around these types and they probably wouldn’t feel comfortable around you. No big deal you just don’t cross paths.

  • ladyE1988

    Most likely

    • ladyE1988

she was referring to the damn song…I honestly wasn’t offended and I happen to be black myself…like the author said if ya gonna get mad at anybody get mad at Ye Jay or whoever decided to title the track..I mean you can tell if somebody is using the word to be hurtful or cool..but i honestly don’t understand why black ppl get SOOO mad when other races use the word when we over use it ourselves..how da hell is overusing a word that was created to belittle and shame us taking power?!??!!!

      • ladyE1988

It’s a horribly negative word used to ultimately disrespect our African ancestors and, yet some of us repulse the ideas of claiming where we come from and who we are..WE don’t even know who we are(some of us anyway) CONCLUSION- i dont think the word will ever stop being used, sadly, so we either gotta ignore it, roll wit it, or just get over it….

  • guest

Kanye and Jay is making millions living up to a stereotype. The stadium was full with primarily white people and they were all chanting that n**gas in paris song. I think they did that song 11 times. My point? I give up with all the foolary. I will just do me.

  • joy

Gwyneth is wrong for standing there with her arm around another woman’s husband. You can tell she thinks it’s cool to overstep her boundaries and I hope Beyonce is keeping a close eye on her. She’s always hugged up on Jay-Z, at the concerts, speaking about him…….

As far as the subject at hand goes look who she hangs around ! She has these ignant fools telling her it’s ok, go ahead and call us n i g a’s. You can tell she has no respect. If I was a white person with black friends no way would I or would I feel comfortable saying such a negative word, nor would I always be up on my friend husband. She was wrong because in no way shape or form do ignant’s who most likely don’t have a H.S. diploma speak for an entire race.

    • Samantha Rodriguez

“Gwyneth is wrong for standing there with her arm around another woman’s husband”..LMAO! You can’t be serious.

    • http://twitter.com/gennatay RoGina

      LMAO….seriously.

    • Chanda

I see nothing wrong with Gwyneth standing next to Jay-Z. Is she suppose be nervous or have her gaurd up when she’s around black friends? Too awkward! There’s no boundaries to overstep. You either trust your friends or you don’t. Obviously they trust Gwenyth and her husband Chris but they shouldn’t because they’re white? Black and white people need to learn how to chill out more around each other and stop being so damn uptight all the time.

  • bluekissess

Here we go I can hear Bill O’Racist, Rev Al Sharpton & Dr. Cornell West now. I get confused. Black people use it to take back “its power” what power. Hanging from trees?, using coloreds bathroom, being beaten by police? Why would people want to take back a word that did so much harm? They can keep that word. Nobody should be saying it and no one should get a “special” pass to say it. Its funny that the so-called “intellectual” black people justify that word.

    • Mrsadkiah

Agree with EVERY word of this. Personally I think that if Black people are gonna go turning it into a “term of endearment” then there should be no problem with ANYONE using it in an “endearing” way. This is what happens when people defend stupidity.

      • bluekissess

Thank You. Sometimes I believe us (meaning blacks) hold ourselves back. Some don’t know how powerful we can be?

        • lisasmith

but ask yourself why they don’t know, have they been taught?

          • bluekissess

Probably not but that is no longer an excuse books and technology. People can go on Facebook but can’t type black history in Google’s search engine?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JAI4SRENU2A5WKRTELXXYJPDSI Kayla

There was no concern when Jay and Kanye were calling themselves that…

    • tiredofthebs

Yeah, just like it’s no concern when ppl of other races call each other negative words to describe themselves. We still get the message that if we are not apart of that group, we don’t say the word. Bottom line, there is no comparison. The same way gay men call each other the f word, I know for sure that, that is not something that they don’t like non-gay men calling them.
We are so quick to be politically correct, and blame ourselves, that some will let Gwenyth Paltrow get a pass regardless of how she used it. **like non-gay men calling them.

      • http://twitter.com/gennatay RoGina

If a word is considered discriminatory, racist etc, it should be considered that way across the board.

        • tiredofthebs

and there also should be world peace, but given that we live in reality, things are not always how they “should” be, if they were, wouldn’t be a topic.

          • http://twitter.com/gennatay RoGina

The way people are making this insignificant issue relevance is beyond me. I don’t use the word, and I don’t allow it in my house. In reality, a word does not change meaning depending on who says it, that should be the real topic.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JAI4SRENU2A5WKRTELXXYJPDSI Kayla

she was saying the name of the song…. it depends on how the context of the word was used… she wasn’t specifically calling jay and kanye a n*gger. Can’t get uptight if someone says a word we use all the time.. A word doesn’t belong to a certain group of people.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JAI4SRENU2A5WKRTELXXYJPDSI Kayla

  • quest

It’s the name of the song. People please stop the madness. Rappers have been using the word since rap started and they will continue to use the word until rap ends. Can we please move on from this. It is what it is!

    • bluekissess

Well maybe that’s the problem. Blacks don’t know what its like to live back then. You can walk into a restaurant, use a restroom, plant a tree instead of hang from one. Don Imus can say Nappy headed hoes and get media uproar but when it comes the the n word we should be calm cool and collected. Maybe they shouldn’t use that word in the George Zimmerman case to prove he’s a racist since the word means nothing

      • ….

U do realize that if GZ used the word he wasnt using it in the same way that it is being used in the song?

        • bluekissess

So now we have to figure out the difference? It shouldn’t be said. I’m sure if someone called you the b word I’m sure you wouldn’t stop and think about the context in which its used. Wake up

          • dancerzrule14

Im sorry i misread your post. I think we actually agree.
