Where Are They Now? 10 Black Actresses Who Should Have Blown Up Big…

May 31st, 2012 - By Victoria Uwumarogie

We’ve talked so much about underrated actresses in the past, but the ladies on this list are women who had huge breakthrough roles in some of our favorite movies. And while it was easy for us to see them having all the luck and reaching superstardom in Hollywood (or at least black Hollywood), things haven’t been that easy. We’re still hoping they’ll become household names sooner or later. Check out 9 black actresses and the movies that put them on our radar and help us figure out why they aren’t as big as the Gabrielles, Tarajis, Nias and more. Where are they now?

Tracy Camilla Johns

My hair idol! And also the heroine in one of my favorite films of all time. Tracy Camila Johns was dope as the sexually liberated Nola Darling in Spike Lee’s She’s Gotta Have It. She knew what she wanted, and the number of men she wanted it with, and scoffed at the idea of monogamy and being a one-man woman (how do you like that!?). But after she breaking through in one of Spike’s first feature films, she kept the momentum going for a second, and then fizzled out. Johns went on to have a tiny role in Mo Better Blues, was the scandalous girlfriend of G in New Jack City, and had a small role in an early Air Jordan commercial, but after ’91, that was it. *sad face*

Each and every last one of them are beautiful black actresses. But its hard to snag a job as a Black actress especially if shes a darker skin tone. The only director who I know that can resurrect their career is Tyler Perry. He is good at putting  veteran thespians back on the screen

  • Lisall76

I agree!  They are all great actresses!

  • Gataprieta1976

N’Bushe Wright and Tara Hicks, yes, both so beautiful, but I am looking for Sophie Okonedo, from Hotel Rwanda. She is a wonderful actress that mainstream America doesn’t seem to know…She has been in the business for years and has work in production even now.

    • Tae

I was thinking the SAME DAMN THING! She did her thing in Hotel Rawanda AND the Secret Life of Bees.

I just saw a movie on Netflix with Sophie called “Skin.” She was great. It’s about South Africa. She plays a colored girl whose parents classify her as white. It was riveting.

  • TDR25_Forever

I’m surprised Moniqe Coleman didn’t make the list. She was in the High School Musical movies.

  • Drai

Just Another Girl on the IRT??!!!!! OMG, that movie takes me back! Thats like saying do you remember the MusicBox Station or Showtime at the Apollo. Lol  Wow…. where have these actresses been?

    • Sassynhot

Now these ladies ARE REAL ACTRESSES!!!

  • Karla_aka08

hey I have wondered about the girl that played Nia Longs BFF in Love Jones. where is she? Loved her!!!

    • Rayven

She had some mental issues and stopped acting,,,

      • Chantellw

She was actually on the last episode of Harry’s Law after a very long absence from Hollywood.

    • dechayne

      she was Lisa Nicole Carson

  • Allie1234

i cant rember T. jones in baby boy

    • Ladybug94

A.J. Johnson.  She was in the House Party movies also.

    • prettybadA$$

she was the friend with infamous line ” oooh girl imma call you back” Yvette friend

  • DeeDotCeeDot

I definitely agree with this list!! I also want to know what happened with the lady with the braids in “love jones”, I think that was her only film as well.

    • dechayne

      Lisa Nicole Carson…I love her!

      • April N December

Me too! She is one of the (many) reasons I went natural.

      • Sassynhot

She used to be in Alley McBeal (Fox). Heard she got sick and was hospitalized, I’m not sure but I think she got a nervous breakdown some years ago. Am I right or am I right?

      • http://www.facebook.com/jessicalterry Jessica Terry

That wasn’t Lisa Nicole Carson; she was in ‘love jones’ but she wasn’t the one with the braids. The one with the braids was a different character, though I’m not sure what her name is.

        • dechayne

Just figured it out. It was Bernadette Speakes

    • April N December

She was also in Jason’s Lyric, Eve’s Bayou and a movie with Denzel Washington (can’t think of the name) as one of his love interests. I don’t recall seeing her in much since Ally McBeal though.

  • Love_Sexy

Some of the actresses I have never heard of before along with the movies mentioned….I will definitely try to get a copy of their films to watch…..Thanks MN!

This article brings me to a question: When will Yelling to the Sky be released?

  • Rayven

Lela Rochon & Rose Jackson need to be added….

    • Injynqbs

      Agreed!

    • http://twitter.com/CourtnyK_ IG: CourtnyK_

Lela Rochon was the first person I thought of when I saw this article

      • Mike Smith

The main reason why these ‘black’ female actors didn’t blow up is because Hollywood is still ran by white folks. These actress, should take a hint from Hally Berry and Janet Jackson, marring a white millionaire is nothing ,nowadays, with inflation and the cost of living, you have to get you a billionaire.

  • Guest

I watch Just Another Girl on the I.R.T. and that movie was the reason why I waited have sex as adult.

    • bobby bananas

we had to watch that movie in 10th grade.
      corrupted forever

  • Rayna Fields

We all know that it’s bit harder for Black actresses to get recognition and prominent roles in Hollywood.

    • awet

I agree. The term “blowing up” is relative, especially for black actresses. These actresses may not be starring in mainstream movies but I’m sure they’re still working, it may just be straight to DVD movies!

  • awet

Taral Hicks was also in A Bronx Tale!

    • Deja

Yes!  I’m totally rainbow for her!

    • Nisha136988

That’s exactly what I was going to point out. That was like her first movie (at least the first I seen). Loved that movie!!!!!

    • activist1

She was great in that film!

    • LiiSH

People should youtube her she was in some Subway Tales movie short where she sung a rendition of Troubles of the World. She was excellent.

  • Rusty

great list. You hit the 3 actresses i was hoping you would Bruklin Harris, Cynda Williams, and N’Bushe Wright. Like Diane already mentioned, Cynda was great in One False Move. Also Bruklin was in Zebrahead with N’Bushe.

  • poetsgroove

Just another girl on the IRT is my movie too!!

  • tee tee

    Good list

  • Lolabunny

I liked Just another girl on the irt as a teenager. But now her loudness int he movie annoys me. I think all teenagers should watch t he movie. I just wish it had a more realistic ending to show how hard having a baby really is.

    • SocialButterfly

er….hello, mtv’s 16 & pregnant shows how hard it is boo!

    • Ladybug94

I agree, it was hard listening to her after a while. Plus her friend Natete was always whining, uughh, tha got on my nerves.

  • Bluekissess

All women are soooo beautiful. I always wanted to have long legs like “Keisha” from Belly.

HollyWhite isn’t going to hire us so we Tyler Perry & Ice Cube need to hire them. I would love to see these women dominate the Oscars one day

  • Diane

You neglected to mention Cynda William’s outstanding performance in Carl Franklin’s brilliant movie, “One False Move” co-starring Billy Bob Thornton, Michael Beach and Bill Paxton … I for one also loved her in “Caught Up” with Bokeem Woodbine!

    • Danfield

Damn, she didn’t even make THIS list!

    • MOMMAROOSA

I LOVED “One False Move”! Sad ending though

    • lisalr68

I love Hallie Berry, but Hallie BIT Cynda’s hairstyle. Cynda wore the signature short cut in Mo Betta Blues. Years later, Hallie wore it in Boomerang, and she was dubbed famous for it.
