Dream Hampton Quits Twitter After Beyhive Goes Too Hard Criticizing Daughter

May 30th, 2012 - By Brande Victorian

You would think posting a photo of her daughter, Nina, with Beyonce backstage after her Revel concert this past weekend would be harmless enough. But when Dream Hampton did that last night, she received an unexpectedly nasty backlash. It wasn’t the kind that’s been directed at Michelle Obama for taking her daughter’s to Bey’s concerts or being a fan of the singer, the Beyhive and Beyonce stans on Twitter and Tumblr were much more brutal, taunting Dream’s daughter for her looks.

The hateful comments were enough to make Dream Hampton pull the plug on Twitter account, but not before fully explaining why:

“Because someone tumbld a pic of my daughter w/Bey, which I posted on FB, which I try to keep private, I’m now dealing w/tweets like these…These are early 20 something Beyonce stans coming for my teenager. I’m done here. It’s been real. Let me shut down this Twitter account. I’ve been wanting to for a while. It’s been real.

“I posted a pic of my daughter & our friend Beyonce on my very private Facebook page. Everyday, I turn down “friend” requests on FB. I turn them down because I post pics of my daughter on FB for family and friends I actually know. Twitter is a more public space for me. On Twitter, I refer to my daughter as “awesome daughter” because she is, and because I’m private. I don’t know if I don’t know how to set whatever new privacy settings you have to set on Facebook, but that pic ended up on a tumblr. I don’t search tumblr, or even know if you can search tumblr, but I Twitter search my own name pretty frequently at least twice a week…

“Last night, after tweeting abt summer reading lists & the challenging day I had to face today, I searched my name on Twitter. What I found was a Bey “stan” page who’d tweeted the pic of my daughter and Bey from some other Bey “stan” tumblr w/the comment “ewww”…This Twitter Bey stan later reposted the same pic on Twitter w/my daughter cropped out, then RT’d s’one’s comment abt being grateful+..”ugly girl” was cropped out. I tweeted this Beyonce “stan” asking how the fuk they got the pic (I hadnt made the connection to the tumblr) + …and asked them to remove the pic. This stan, of course, RT’d my irate tweet, tweeted she was dying of laughter & a bunch of her 7K + …fellow stans tweeted me. One began following me and when I immediately blocked her, called my daughter an Ugly a** in all caps. For those of you who know me, you know I’m not really here for you to be tweeting me, in all kaps, what an ugly a** my child is. Like, I’m really not here for that.

“I talked to Beyonce after her last show last night, we were worried Nina would see Beyonce’s so called fans calling a teenager ugly and Bey+ decided to remind my daughter what she thinks of her. So Bey posted the pic of my daughter & her on her tumblr & wrote “beautiful princess”…I’ve made amazing connections on Twitter, have been intellectually stimulated and have discovered amazing thinkers. But yes, I’m done. My leaving Twitter is not blog worthy. I wasn’t “run off” by a few people calling themselves Beyonce stans. Or whatever. But I am good on social media, and the access it affords nuts, and the false intimacy that created boundary crossing. I’ve had false Twitter exits before, this isn’t one of them. Wishing you all love. I’m so grateful for all these replies. Twitter has always been more loving than hateful, but more distracting than anything. For the last time…I’m not leaving Twitter because I was ran off. The Isht is turning into Myspace and I’m good. Ok, Peace. Free Mumia.”

In other words, these people should be ashamed. Nothing about this situation is really specific to Beyonce. In the last few months we’ve seen way too many examples of twitter fandom gone too far, particularly the Chris Brown, Rihanna, Karrueche Tran brigade, but in this instance stans weren’t even defending Bey, they were just being hateful and succumbing to mean girl culture.

Leaving Twitter was probably the smartest thing Dream could do; e-balls is a real phenomenon and sometimes the only thing you really can do is block out the e-nonsense, permanently.

What do you think about this situation as a whole?

its one thing to be a fan but that chick wasn’t a fan she was a HATER!!!! plain and simple see people tend to get like that when they can’t afford to go see beyonce let alone get a chance to meet her backstage.  That s just crazy to attack a teenager and for what? what enjoyment to you get out of trying to hurt a child.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_LBSPSV27VXWMQ62NT7IIYVKWD4 NaomiH

People can be so cruel she is a child why would you attack her.  I don’t do any kind of social media if I don’t call you text you or see you I don’t want to be bothered with you.  Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr they can have it.

  • Figgypru

‘ll miss Dream on twitter but I understand it’s just not worth it.

Just saying… I wonder where these stans get all this mean girl mentality. There is something seriously wrong with kids these days.

E-balls. I never heard that term. Thanks author, I will use it. And for those bullies who went after dream’s kid, they should be ashamed. These people who get on the internet with their eballs, we don’t know what they look like, what they do, how they conduct themselves what have you. Some of these people could be complete losers in their real life but when they get on the net they act  like a king/queen. Shame. Dream and Beyonce handled it well. And dream’s daughter is a beautiful queen by the way who is on first name basis with Beyonce. How many of these so call stans can say they know their idol like that?

  • Gmarie

I’m so tired of ugly grown folks commenting on the physical appearances of children..
what the hell does the way she looks have to do with anything. log off and go feed your own kids..

  • Jaida Bang

that child is beautiful. that is why I don’t do twitter. there are a bunch of sad and vicious people trying to bully everyone via the internet. how lame can you be to bully somebody from the safety of your computer of phone?

I honestly think its ridic!!! smh that girl is cute and im so sick of these “super fans” going crazy ove people who they will never meet face to face or speak….and I bet a 100 that beyonce dk none of them crazy ppl

  • Chasin

There are a lot of computer bullies out there.  I’ve always told my daughter people who post negative and derogatory things are people with true low self-esteem.  We have to pray for these people and  hope that they see the error of their ways.  By the way this child is beautiful!

I would have sooo much respect for beyonce if she came out and publicly told her “Beyhive” to stfu! (in beyonce fashion of course). Obviously she is no way responsible for what her stans do and say but i feel like if she (the woman they regard so highly) were to come out and say how disgusted she is that ppl wud hurt and essentially bully in her name, then i think they wouldtone it down! Sadly what’s really disgusting is how these young women behave, clearly they have self esteem issues and no real women in their life to look up to.

  • Tagirl

Beyonce has some of the worst stans ever. I would say her and Chris Brown. Like they be on some different stuff. I SMH at how big of a fan I was of her and DC when I was in high school and college almost 9 years ago.  But I was on that, “don’t criticize them,” which was still ridiculous. And they weren’t committing any crimes!  But never did I go to the lengths that these crazy stans go to. It’s like their minds aren’t fully developed yet. And it’s sad, because at the end of the day, these are people who just happen to have high profile jobs.

Kids should always be off limits. It’s over the line and crazy to attack someone’s child, even if you’re a young person yourself. It says a lot about your mentality. I commend Beyonce for doing what she could to rectify the situation and I hope the young lady is able see past idiots.

Look here this is a ll a publicity stunt–like who really cares??? this girl Hampton is a media troll– twitter is for people who like to hear themselves talk–and when I checked she was tweeting like crazy everyday. Anyone who tweets more than 10 times a day has got free time on their hands and is insecure that they feel they gotta let people know whats on their mind. I got my own problems, dont need you to share yours.  Im glad that she left twitter cuz now she can be busy raising her daughter, and not self indulging in her own words.

    • Tagirl

That’s not true. You can access Twitter and the other social media sites from your phone, so you can have a busy life and still tweet 10 times a day. They’re tweets. 140 characters. From what I read, she tweeted some good stuff because many are sad to see her go. I mean, you can’t really psychoanalyze a person based on them tweeting 10 times a day.

The times we live in… people are emotionally frozen when it comes to the social media… thats too sad to hear.  but we all know insecure people who can type fast are annoying.

  • Bluekissess

    Who is Dream Hampton?

  • Love_Sexy

I don’t blame them for shutting down their Twitter account….People are absolutely ridiculous when it come to stars because its like they loose their minds….I have heard that Beyonce fans or stans (whatever you call them) are terrible….They do not even know how to respectfully disagree with someone who may comment about Beyonce that they feel is negative….The first attack with them is “hater”……People need to stop because it looks really sad and pathetic…..I am glad that Beyonce was kind enough to have made the gesture she did for her daughter Nina.

  • emily

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this young lady!!  I’m betting those were mostly attention starved, not home trained, fatherless, ignorant, miserable kids.  Well adjusted kids do not behave like this even behind the screen.  I hope i’m right.  it’d be sickening to hear it was from adults.  i’m a destiny’s child/Bey fan, but this sounds mental casey.

    • Guest

True but the sad part is some of those crazies could be adults. That’s the sad anf scary part. I really don’t like to call people losers because it’s such a harsh word but… to attack a young teenage girl for no reason makes them LOSERS

  • http://twitter.com/HomeGirlBlog Raquel

I think the girl actually kinda looks like Beyonce. Can’t believe the original meanie got so many to cosign. Crazy.

  • Hellifiknow

I think she referenced Beyonce more than she mentioned her daughter. Anyone who reads social media know all these stans are crazy. Look what the Chris Brown nut jobs did to Chrissy Teigen.

  • beaniesmama

She’s a beautiful girl!  Even if she wasn’t a pretty girl, so what?!?!? There are so many more important things about a person than what their looks.  Some people are insensitive, ignorant and prone to Junior High School behavior.  The sad part is, they are most likely just jealous because they weren’t in the picture with Bey.

    • THERESAK829

I CAN RELATE TO YOUR COMMENT, BECAUSE IN TODAYS SOCIETY, BEAUTY IS EVERYTHING. ITS SO SAD WHEN YOUNG PEOPLE HAVE TO SUFFER FOR SOMEONE ELSE IGNORANCE. THEY ARE JEALOUS OF HER  BECAUSE SHE WAS THERE AND THEY WERE NOT THERE. MY BEST ADVISE IS TO KEEP YOUR HEAD UP  AND IGNORE THE HATERS, BECAUSE THATS WHAT THEY ARE. YOU ARE A BEAUTIFUL YOUNG LADY, AND YOUR MOM IS A SAINT FOR EVEN BEING THAT POSITIVE PERSON IN YOUR LIFE.I WISH I HAD SOMEONE TO BE THERE FOR ME WHEN I WAS YOUNG. MAYBE I WOULDNT HAVE SUCH LOW SELF ESTEEM NOW. MAY GOD FOREVER BLESS YOU. AND DONT FORGET KEEP YOUR HEAD UP. ITS OK. GOD LOVES THE WAY YOU LOOK, BECAUSE HE MADE YOU. DONT EVER FORGET THAT….

Let she who looked flawless without makeup as a teen cast the first stone. She looks appropriate for her age and will learn to groom herself differently as she matures. Why are people trying to turn teens into glam girls? Let her be young, fresh faced and casual. Cuteness. :)

I’m so stealing that first line. Beautifully spoken :) (or typed)
