I’m a Little Uncomfortable With Michelle O’s Love For Beyoncé, Are You?

I know, I know; you’re already assuming by this headline that I’m hating on Bey. Well, although there’s a lot to be envious about, my issue with Beyonce and the First Lady’s romance has less to do with Bey and more to do with Michelle Obama.

As reviews start rolling in of Beyoncé’s concert at the Revel Casino in Atlantic City, it’s become apparent that Michelle’s attendance, along with her two daughters Sasha and Malia, added an umph factor to the already-highly-publicized festivities. Just days before, the First Lady had told People that if she could be anyone else, she’d be Beyoncé. Huh?

But my confusion with Michelle Obama’s infatuation with the pop star didn’t start there – it started when she commented about how good of a role model Beyonce is to young women. I don’t know about you but although I do think Bey is the greatest performer out there today (as her hubby Jay tweeted over the weekend), I wouldn’t hold her up as the gold standard for young girls.

Sasha and Malia are both under 13. To uphold this woman, who has partially gotten to the top by dressing scantily and gyrating in music videos and engaging in a competition of whose the hottest amongst the pop princesses, as their role model just seems kind of funny to me.

To be honest, I’d be more comfortable with my kids watching Kelly Clarkson videos any day. But again, that’s about understanding what it means to be an appropriate role model for young girls. Michelle Obama is an example of a wholesome role model. Beyonce definitely deserves respect but her career is not something I’d be comfortable for my kids to admire.

While I’m sure Michelle appreciates the Carter’s support of her husband’s election campaign, I do think she needs to draw the line when it comes to her fandom of Queen Bee. President Obama has been accused of being too Hollywood and the gushing of the Carters, a family who is better known for their musical achievements rather than their philanthropic efforts, doesn’t really help to keep them connected with the average American. I admire the Obamas, and I admire the Carters on a very different level, but I do want them to stay in their lanes to an extent. I admit it!

What do you think? Should FLOTUS keep her love affair for the Queen on the low or continue to espouse her as a great role model?

Well, the article is interesting. But Michelle’s move seems to be more calculated than anything else,as it is just for promotion. The Obamas knew that if they wanted to win the elections among Black people, they had to seduce “ghetto” and trashy black folks and try to get credibility. Then,I would also think that the Carters,by being supported by the Obamas, have more access to the higher spheres of the Elite whose members refuse to intergrate ghetto singers a la Slave-Z.Finally,who knows what the Obamas say to their daughters at home? They probably support Beyoncé in public, but insult her in private! Don’t forget that Michelle Obama is educated and she would not have supported Beyoncé if she wasn’t famous :/

It is because beyonce fell in love, got married, and had a baby. In that order.

It is ridiculous that you people are on here arguing over a celebrity who could care less about you. Some of you come to Beyonce’s defense, and what has she done for you lately? Get real. Go do something better with your life, read a book, get a good education. I totally agree that young girls should look up to educated women who are flourishing in the sciences, law, etc., not celebrities who only show us what they want us to see. I would much rather have my future daughter looking up to me as a future physician and other educated doctors, lawyers, etc., than a celebrity.

Too, too many of our young people believe that role models are defined as those who are flashy entertainers and ballers, who are seeking god-like adulation, mo’ money and not much else. Beyonce happens to have some talent, but is not politicized nor especially intelligent. A behind shaking stage presence is someone’s entertainment, but definitely not encouragement as a role model for young girls to look up to. I find it shocking that Mrs. Obama, who has walked in the shoes of so many grande dames to arrive at her successful station in life, would promote someone like Beyonce as a role model for her daughters as well as thousands of other black daughters. OMG, what was Mrs. O thinking when she answered that if she could be any other person she would be Beyonce!!! Did she forget all the stalwarts of the black history and civil rights movement, and religious leaders, teachers, writers, historians, business folk, entertainers who entertained – not titillated; so many categories I can’t list them all here. Most of all, Mrs. Obama needs to remember she too is a role model, who is much admired and needs to think before speaking!

It’s campaign season and fundraising time. That’s why they are doing this.

Sex appeal has always sold and always will. At least she did not become famous by having a baby with a famous guy and riding his coat tails. She is a performer…..no young starlet performs in a turtle neck or a suit! She has done the right thing business-wise also; she may not be the best actress or have the best clothing line but with those things she’ll be ok when she’s no longer a size six or if her marriage doesn’t work out (although I hope they make it!)

Michelle Obama represents the greatest lost opportunity of the Obama era.  She only has eight (if she is lucky) years to make a difference.  She appears to have chosen to squander that opportunity on popular culture and frivolousness.  Disappointingly she does not seem to have a true sense of history. Forget Beyonce, I do not consider Michelle Obama a role model for my daughters.

I agree w the article. Its crazy how a highly educated, respected and admired woman such as the FLOTUS would even answer that question. Why didn’t she say she would be herself?? Lol I will put it this way….maybe she’s just in awe of Bey’s glamour, beauty and apparently perfect life. None the less I did feel a bit dissapointed that she doesn’t realize that SHE(Michelle) is the real Queen B!!

  • Just2hurtu

My problem.with the whole thing is yhat Michelle is riding the wave & trying to bs us. No way on God’s green earth does this highly accomplished woman want to BE Beyonce’s simple-minded a zz… Please

  • Malekalenzy

Beyonce is just now getting her GED! Nuff said….no….u shouldn’t want 2 be someone who doesnot place a high emphasis on education. I love Bey, but when I found that out it disturbed me, that her parents were ok with it as well.

  • Ktsc1986

I’d like someone to name one reason why B should not be a role model. She is undoubtedly one of the most successful performers, whether you like it or not. She has lived a private life, married her husband, had her daughter, making major moves most artist will never see, and done so while keeping it classy. Where is the wrong in that. I would want my daughter to do all that. And where do you get off on telling the FLOTUS who she can admire. And how. I’d think because she is so educated and clearly knows what’s she doing, you’d take the hint….

I agree.  This article is so on point.  I lost all respect for Michelle O with this one.  I am not sure why Michelle as a Yale educated lawyer would even be impressed with a Beyonce who can barely string a sentence together and is a marginal talent at best.

  • Pebblezena101

I am so glad someone had the nerve to call this out. It’s just totally out of place of the first lady.
