Small to Big Screen: TV Shows That Should Be Turned Into Movies

May 27th, 2012 - By Stephanie Guerilus

Quality shows  featuring positive African Americans just aren’t made like they used to be. They’re enjoyed now through re-runs on TV One and rewound for laughs on DVD/Blu Ray players. Most shows have special reunions to find out what favorite characters are up to but these six sitcoms could use more than just an hour of screen time to catch up. I’m thinking if the Sex and the City chicks could get TWO (count ‘em) movies, why not some of our favorite black comedies from back in the day?

In fact, we even created storylines for the shows to help make them more dramatic. Would you check these out on the big screen?

I so loved the story lines for girlfriends, fresh prince, living single and a different world. They could also work good as series. I miss these shows on air.

I loved the Different World “script” it actually seems feasible. I also liked the Girlfriends and Fresh Prince of Bel Air too. However the Martin script can be a little different, you won’t ever so Tisha Campbell-Martin work with Martin again, I would just say they got a divorce and he ends up with Lark Vorhees (the girl he was with when Martin and Gina broke up for awhile).  I think you kinda went to far with the Living Single script because Khadijah would have to be with Scooter, they were very cute together. Doesn’t matter though it was all in fun…:-)

one khadijah and scooter was engaged so shouldn’t they be together? just saying

Now if Queen Latifah would really come out the closet. All of the story lines seem good. I wish this would really happen though.

I don’t know.  I liked the shows, but can’t envision them as movies.  I’m trying to think of a TV show made into a movie that I liked…I can’t.  Wouldn’t a Girlfriends movie just seem like ‘Waiting to Exhale’?  Four female friends, represented by specific personality types:  the strong achiever, the ditzy one, the promiscuous / shallow one, the sharp-tongued one.  We’ve seen that theme done over and over: Golden Girls, Living Single, Waiting to Exhale, and then Girlfriends.  I may be forgetting a couple.

Designing Women! LOL Designing women is the southern version of Living Single which is the black version of Golden Girls which is the senior version of Designing Women! Loved them all but they have the same stock character types and in the end even the same character trajectory ( notice the ditzy innocent is always the one with the long term true love?) Girlfriends mixed it up a little, admittedly (Lynn was the tramp AND the free spirit!)

I mention this because I too think we could come out with some new ideas!!

I knew I was forgetting something.  Thanks!

All are pretty good storylines but they can be executed in a single episode not a full length movie.

THEY ALL SOUND SO GOOD BUT I PREFER MARTIN AND DIFFERENT WORLD OH AND LIVING SINGLE TOO

  • Ay

The only one that seems feasible is a Girlfriends or Martin movie. And the Martin one is questionable since his comedy fell off over the years.
