Okay, so she was no Sade. In fact, for many, her voice was like listening to a teacher scratch a gritty chalk board. When Aaliyah passed away in 2001, I even knew a guy who said, “Why do the good singers have to die? Why couldn’t they take Macy Gray???” Word? Macy Gray was kind of an acquired taste, and if you could overlook the unique qualities of her voice and listen to the lyrics and the production of her songs, you’d know she was actually pretty dope. But alas, to each their own.

    Everyone growing up had posters of your favorite artist on their wall. I can’t express enough how much in love I was with ‘NSync!!!! They were my fav when I was little. I had posters everywhere, all their cd’s (I mean even the Christmas albums lol) My family looked at me like I was crazy because they were only listing to rap and r&b. Of course I was called an Oreo, which I still am called that because I listen to just about anything with a beat lol have to have variety.

      ” I listen to just about anything with a beat ” Nisha, you and me both. I also listen to K-POP. Korean pop which most of is Korean R&B which might suprise most people. But if you like anything with a beat check out Rain, 2NE1, BigBang and some Taeyang

    Thank you, MN, for posting this!  I love the music of the “suburbs” because that is where I came from, no shame at all!  Give me “Don’t Speak” from No Doubt, ‘Lovefool” from the Cardigans and I will jam it like I’m Mary J. Blige :)   Too many examples to list!

    I listened to all of these artists as well. Out of these, my particular faves were N’Sync (hugest fan ever) and Spice Girls (I wanted to be Scary Spice and Posh Spice so bad) Lol. I was one of the “weird” ones back in the day that listened to everything. People would always give me the “side eye” on my music taste. I just never saw the point in restricting myself to 1 or 2 certain music genres just because I was black. I listen to pretty much anything from all sorts of genres. R&B, Pop, some Rap/Hip Hop (it’s not what it used to be), Rock, Trance, House, Dubstep etc…the only genres I don’t really listen to as much is Country and Jazz. But to me good music is good music, no matter who’s singing it.

    Its liek u in my mind….I have the Spice Girls Album on repeat on my Ipod….LOVED and still LOVE THEM…. we dont have many girl bands like that ( DC dont count too serious and grown up)

    I LOVE me some Shania, her voice was was strong and smooth. Her videos were fun to watch they even played her on MTV back in the day so she def had sucess outside the county music world. I’m bout to go find my greatest hits album right now….

    I often got the side eye when I would have Celine Dion, ‘Nsync, 98 degrees, etc on my radio. Don’t get me wrong, I love, love, love R&B & some Hip Hop but I also enjoy other genre of music as well. There is nothing wrong with being musically diverse. I think if more of us broaden our horizon and expand our minds there would be less hate in the world. Just sayin……
