It’s official: the Smith family is ready for another big screen close-up. In an interview with Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts, on Wednesday, Will Smith confirmed that the youngest of the Smith clan, Willow, 11, would be following in her parents and older brother Jayden’s (The Karate Kid) footsteps, with a starring role in the modernized film version of the 1982 musical Annie

Will Smith, who is slated to produce the Sony Pictures project, also confirmed to Good Morning America that his Men In Black 3 co-star, Oscar winner Emma Thompson, wrote the script for the contemporary Annie film.

The film will be set in modern-day New York and will feature a host of new updated songs. Hip-hop, mogul, and hit maker Jay-Z is in charge of the music and is expected to write new musical tracks for the soundtrack.  Jay-z is not new to re-imagining Annie tracks.  His 1998 hit single “Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)” featured samples from the Broadway musical version.

Find out who Willow wants to play her dad at theGrio.com.

Instead of trying to copy a classic musical they should make a new one with a different story. The original will always be the best! Seriously, why can’t people in Hollywood be creative anymore? Also alittle fun fact the musical was based off of the ‘Little Orphan Annie’ comic strips. The guy who wrote the comic based it off a street wise little girl he met while walking the streets of Chicago. Her real name was Annie and yes she was white.

Two reasons I won’t be seeing this. Number one, Annie was very time-based. Reason 1, She will always be the little redhead from the comics; and reason 2, The Karate Kid remake, which was an abomination. Will, I’m sorry man, but if you want to push your kids in our face, do something original.Besides, Annie has been already remade to death.

    I don’t want them ruining a classic….

Enough with remaking White stories with Black actors. There are plenty of untold Black stories that need telling.

    um ok? good for her

I usually don’t care for movies with kid casts/stars, but orphan stories are usually pretty good.  I might go see it.
