Same Ish, Different Year: Do We Still Need the BET Awards?

It’s almost summer, and with that season approaching with the quickness (not until June, but you know Memorial Day ushers in the summertime way of thinking and naked-ness), it’s time to get ready for another presentation of the BET Awards. Nominations came out yesterday, and while I’m sure most–no, make that some–of the nominees are geeked up about their honors, I kind of rolled my eyes at not only the nominations, but the idea of another unorganized award show. Is it just me, or have the BET Awards become pretty irrelevant and unnecessary at this point?

I’ll never forget when the show was at its prime. The award show as a whole started in 2001 and has been a force to be reckoned with over the years, even pulling in MTV Video Music Award numbers, sometimes record numbers for the network. The most entertaining BET Awards presentation was probably the one in 2003 when Mo’Nique was the host, and anybody and everybody that was hot in the industry (and black) was in the audience. That was the year Bey performed “Crazy in Love” live for the first time, a very popular 50 Cent (remember, this was a LONG time ago) slayed the stage, and that was the year the show honored James Brown and Michael Jackson came out and got down with him. Our last glimpse of the men together on stage before both passed. Pretty awesome indeed.

But if you look forward after those years, the ceremonies became more and more ridiculous. From hosts who bombed (I still love you Damon Wayans), to reckless mess (Lil Wayne singing “I wish I could f**k every girl in the world” with his daughter and her friends dancing on stage), the terrible censorship (covering up clean words and accidentally letting the F-bomb and worse be aired on national television), and Debra Lee’s wardrobe choices, folks have been begging BET to go back to the drawing board with this once very fun and exciting annual event.

I’m sure most would say we need the BET Awards in order to honor OUR stars, but how does the show benefit and represent for black celebrities when half of them don’t even show up for the award’s ceremony??? Maybe they started to think the show was obscure as well, because last time I saw folks like Rihanna or even Kanye at the show, they had different boos on their arms and were all smiles before big scandals that would change the direction of their music and careers. And in all honesty, the show has started to honor the same folks over and over again rather than really showcasing a wide variety of talented black stars. And it’s getting pretty tired at this point.

For instance, this year, the video of the year category has two nominations for Bey and two for “The Throne” (Jay-Z and Kanye), leaving just one random nom left for Usher’s video, “Climax.” And that video came out, what, two months ago? And let us not forget that it has been the Chris Brown/YMCMB show for the last three years (Lil Wayne or Drake has consistently closed the show with stomach-turning flashes of Wayne’s panties and expletive-laden performances). Who can forget the fact that they let Chris Brown perform on-stage about three times last year and just HAD to give us a streamed performance of Beyoncé performing at Glastonbury? (They could have kept that.) And after a year that sprouted new female rap talents like Iggy Azalea and Azealia Banks, why Nicki Minaj is nominated against folks like Diamond (she had new music???), I have no clue. They might as well mail her that award now and save her the trouble of coming out. And No Jill Scott in the Female R&B category??? *scoffs*

I do commend producers for including the humanitarian award, the lifetime achievement award (which is hand’s down my favorite part of the show) and letting gospel talents perform (too bad they have to sit in the audience and listen to so much ratchet-ness a majority of the night). I even like that they try to broaden people’s musical tastes by having awards for international acts, but what good is that award when you hand it out before the program starts??? You see, for every step forward the show takes, it winds up taking a few more back. But then again, that’s the history of the network as a whole.

With this type of job, I’ll be watching so I can help provide coverage about what happened, who wore what, and all that jazz (just as I did last year), and I’m really just looking forward to the show’s attempt at honoring Whitney Houston. But I’m hoping with the time they have to put on something fancy, it will be great, and that the awards as a whole can get a major upgrade. But these days, I’m finding that this show…honestly, make that most music award shows, are becoming as irrelevant as as can be, and there’s nothing you can do about it but tune in to laugh, or tune out to maintain your right mind.

BET isn’t even run by black people anymore…debra lee is just the black face for the company…BET is owned by viacom (old white men), which also owns mtv, vh1, and all the other channels that are rachet…so for all the black ppl saying lets not leave BET because we have to keep supporting our own…don’t feel bad you can leave…we don’t have nothing to do with that rachetness…as a matter of fact im proud of everyone here who has something negative to say about the current state of that channel that means we see BET for what it is and we are nothing like how those white execs want to portray us or think we are….and as for the music artist whether we watch the show or not they are still going to make money….idc about those ppls lives anymore…they have nothing positive to teach me or money to give me…why should you spend money on these ppl…they use all the money you help them make on bodyguards to keep you away from them…that ish don’t add up…finish school folks and spend money on stuff that actually matters…trust Beyonce or Rhianna are bot thinking about us….

Kanye opened the BET Awards in 2010 and he appeared on 106 & Park last month. The same people that complain about BET complain about OWN. NEVER satisfied. If it’s so bad, why do you still plan on watching?

  • UK lady

i can’t really comment on it’s decline because here in the UK we have international BET channel and have only seen two editions, starting with the MJ tribute. I actually enjoyed last year’s host, Kevin Hart, I thought he was a lot better than Jamie Foxx. I think the awards just reflect the very poor state of R&B and Rap music at the moment. But agree with the writer that they could take a few more risks, like including some of the international or soul stars in the main awards ceremony or being a little imaginative with some of the categories by acknowledging underground stars that have the potential to hit big.

I’m sure the “Black Wall Street” questioned if we still needed a “black wall street” after the fire.  2012 and black people are one of the most impoverished people in America.

That being said, yes we do need the BET awards.  Where else will we view Jill Scott, Musiq Soulchild, Ledisi, Marsha Ambrosius, etc, etc

  • Chanda

BET needs an intervention. It’s getting to the point where they just have these shows just to keep the tradition and to get it over with. It’s not so much about ratings as it is about people expecting to see the show like they all these other years. It’s almost become the Hip Hop Awards with a few old school and gospel artists thrown in, let’s throw them a bone and we’ll sing a few songs from whoever died this year before we get cussed out. They’ll do a Whitney Houston tribute and hopefully Donna Summer as well so I’ll at least tune into that. But I don’t look foward to watching the Chris Brown/Lil’ Wayne show.

  • RedButterfly81

I’ve never seen a BET awards show ever and I don’t care about it because I don’t watch BET. They’re just giving out awards like people give out candy to children on Halloween anyway.

    • Guest

soo true i totally agree its like food stamps for the hungry but wait its prolly harder to get food stamps than a BET award LOL

  • Trisha_B

The award show is bogus! Debra Lee & the producers have their favorites (beyonce, Chris, Jay & Kanye.) No doubt these are talented people who worked very hard, the nominations are bias. Beyonce should NOT be in the Best Video category. She’s nominated for Love on Top & Countdown. Two videos that have been proven to be plagiarized. Why should she be awarded for stealing someone else’s work? Rihanna had a big year, but only 1 nomination? Really? Nicki being thrown in a category w/ females who haven’t done any work? Then Samuel Jackson hosting it? smh. Fire Debra Lee & get a new president. Where’s Bob Johnson?

    • Ay

Well who do you want to host? Who should be nominated for Vid of the year? Who else is gonna be in the category with Nicki? Rihanna is a POP artist. Like i said people STAY complaining.

      • Trisha_B

Who should be nominated for video of the year? No one b/c everybody’s video looks the same & all the videos are wack now a days. But if Beyonce had to be in that category, they could have chosen Who Runs the World…Who should be in the category w/ nicki? That category shouldn’t even be there. There are no female rappers. Or they could just have best rapper category & throw Nicki in there. But next year, w/ artist like Iggy, Azelia Banks, M.I.A, & i heard Missy coming back out, that category will be good. Rihanna is an artist. She puts out diverse music. Man down (reggae), Birthday cake (R&B), We found love (pop). BET is black entertainment television, not just R&B & hip hop. There are black people who listen to pop. Wasn’t Micheal Jackson the king of POP? smh

      • Trisha_B

oh & to host the event? Lets see…someone who is funny. Someone who would keep people entertained? Kevin Hart? Mike Epps? Chris Tucker? See if Will & Jada want to come back?

    • Whatever

Two of Rihanna’s videos were also proven to be plagiarized so I don’t understand why you think she deserves to be nominated. Furthermore, why are you complaining about Beyonce and yet, questioning why Rihanna isn’t nominated? Rihanna is a POP artist and hasn’t released anything  R&B in years so why does she even deserve the one nomination in best R&B female?

      • guest

Beyonce is a POP artist too…… there is no r&b or soul in her music. And NO. singing with AGGRESSION is not the same thing as singing with soul. *shrugs*

        • Lese

           AMEN!!

        • Whatever

Um, you are wrong. The fact that you would even equate R&B to soul shows how misguided and misinformed that you are. You can be an R&B artist without soul. And soul is subjective anyway. Bey has only put out one predominantly pop album and that was I am…Sasha fierce. Everything else has been primarily contemporary R&B driven. And with the exception of a few songs on 4, what is so pop about the album. Beyonce is an R&B artist who simply crosses over into the pop lane. Pop has never been her primary genre!

          • guest

She is referred to as a pop queen.. you obviously don’t know that the music she makes does not have the beat or RHYTHM BLUES to be R&b… she has always been pop. I mentioned SOUL because you don’t hear it in her music. Period. I’m not talking about the GENRE I’m talking about her voice. So BEFORE you call yourself informing someone, make sure you have the proper understanding of what they are actually saying. Carrie Underwood sings with more soul than Bey.

            • Whatever

Then go listen to Carrie Underwood. Not every listener is stuck on some “soul” pretentious crap. Beyonce has NOT always been pop. She is a CONTEMPORARY R&B artist. Please tell me what is so pop about DIL, B’day and 4. She is a contemporary R&B artist whose music simply transcends into pop. Once again, soul is subjective. If she’s not for you, she’s not for you! To claim there is no R&B in her music is ludacris and beyond absurd when she has released three predominantly contemporary R&B albums. Not everyone needs to be releasing music like Marsha or Jill to be considered an R&B artist. It doesn’t matter anyway I guess, Beyonce already has the nom and nothing you say will take it away!

              • guest

Stan much? Smh relax. Take a deep breath.

      • Trisha_B

Is Rihanna in the best video category? NO! Reason why i didn’t mention her to be in the best video category smh. Are the two videos rihanna was said to plagiarized nominated? NO reason why i didn’t mention those videos. Videos & songs are two different things. Rihanna’s songs always hit #1 & deserve to be nominated.

  • http://twitter.com/MrsNP2 NP

Nope not going to be able to do it.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_LKQE4UQRBBVNOIRAL4EB2SPCWI Jen

It’s totally boring…one person will win and the whole damn audience has to follow, pants hanging around the ankles, sunglasses on (it’s night time), smoked out, drunk (know what I’m sayin), sucky speeches,,,just yuck on all levels.

    LMAO @Lil Wayne’s panties!!!!

  • KAVO

We don’t need BET, let alone the BET awards.

    • Truthhurtz

      Yep!

  • Stephanie

The only thing I have to say is, if they do a Whitney tribute, the better let Brandy & Monica be a part of it & not just giving their encounters with her, let them sing, dang it!!!! Those 2 ladies have held Whitney down through the good time & the bad time!!!

    • Guest

now thats what i want to see the tribute and if Brandy and monica aint doin their own performance and the tribute i really don’t care to even hear. but on the real doe i dnt want to hear i will always love you again.. whitney got tons of hits and nobody could get that song right so they betta sing sumthin else.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JAI4SRENU2A5WKRTELXXYJPDSI Kayla

I would love to support the BET awards, but it’s just too rachet. The only award that matter in music are grammys and even the grammys are a joke

  • Jgay79

I COULD NOT AGREE MORE! I don’t even watch that garbage anymore. I can youtube someone’s sorry performance. Everybody already knows who will win. The show is irrelevant and sorry. It’s all about Hip Hop and nominating the same people allllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll the time. I love this article. So true.

  • Atypical Black Woman

Beyonce no longer has to appear at our blackity black events. She’s way too big of a star. Catch her kicking it with Gwenyth at the MTV music awards though!

    • clinique

Is this supposed to be a good thing? She gotten too good to appear at black shows and represent her culture?

      Mkay

      • Atypical Black Woman

        Sarcasm, hun!

    • Ay

      Basically.

    • Chanda

But I don’t blame her though. BET Awards is stuck in a rut so she’s not really missing anything.

    • Whatever

I hate it when Black people make remarks like this about Beyonce because it’s obvious that they are misinformed, as always. Despite her huge success, Beyonce been supportive of Black magazines and the BET awards. She has performed at the BET awards MORE THAN ANY OTHER ARTIST since the show’s inception in 2000. As a matter of fact, she has performed way more on BET’s awards show than she has on MTV Music Awards. She has supported Essence at their music festival and actually does the essence music festival in lieu of an actual tour stop in NO (something that irritates her fans who want an actual arena show).  She continues to give young African Americans opportunities (Melina actually started off with Beyonce when no one really knew her name, Frank Ocean has credited her for giving him opportunities once he worked with her because a lot more people started checking for his work and mix tape, she just personally called up and comer Luke James to open her Revel shows), but people always want to act as if she’s some sort of sell out to the Black community.

The only show that has received more appearances and performances from Beyonce since she went solo is the grammys. Regardless of the “race” of the show, Beyonce rarely attends an award show unless she is nominated or performing.  She has missed the “white” driven AMAs more times than fans can count and she is nominated there.

And Beyonce has never been at the MTV awards with Gwyneth either.  She only goes when she’s, once again, nominated or is performing. Two years ago, she was at the NAACP and has supported them for years.  She was one of the few people who actually taped a thank you for the soul train awards (she was in Russia on tour at the time) when many of the winners didn’t even show nor tape anything to express their gratitude.

People always want to act as if she’s gotten too good to appear on Black magazines or shows when out of ALL of the mainstream black artists, she, Alicia, and Mary have showed the most continuous support.  Is she supposed to show up to EVERY SINGLE BLACK EVENT as some sort of proof that she is not too good for Black show? Get real!!!!

If black people have the option of building each other up or taring each other a part for some reason we choose the later more often than not. Of course we should always be able to give constructive criticism to each other.

However how often do you see white people openly questioning the relevance of the MTV awards or the billboard awards or of other intensities that specifically highlight  their accomplishments. They know how to voice their opinions in a manner that isn’t damaging to the entity they are trying to help.

  • Elaine

I disagree with the first two comments.  I think a majority of people are tired of seeing the same people performing and even sitting in the audience.  They need to showcase new talent.  It’s getting old.

  • Student21jrh

    I agree with this article…..ijs

    • Rae Marie

so do I. Now I liked last year because of Kevin Hart and Kelly’s and Trey’s performance, but i’m not excited about this one. It’s the same ppl getting the same awards and giving the same performances. I listen to young money 50 times a day on the radio, I dont want to hear them live.

      • Caroneisha

Yes, we are so in the same boat. Everytime you turn on the radio it’s either Nicki, Drake or some song by them. I literally scream at the radio, lol!!! They need new people ASAP. But you know what it’s our fault that the same ole’ people keep getting recognized. Because everytime someone new does come out instead of giving them a chance, we are so quick to shut them down cause ” Oh she trying to be Beyonce,” or ” She acting jus like Rihanna.” NEWS FLASH: Bey and Rihanna are copying someone else you jus don’t know the person or you don’t want to believe it. And we act like there can only be one hot artist at a time. I mean come on people we are in control who makes it or who don’t, I bet if more people stop stanning for one artist and embrace new people then you will see new people all of the time. I mean white people can have a million artists out at a time and they will support all of them at the same time. hell the artist will support on another as well. When they blow up they reach back and help their fellow artist, not act like their too damn good or it should only be them making money. They won’t be like “Oh Christina is jus biting off Brittney Spears so I’m not going to support her,” or “P!nk is trying to be like this person so no.” They embrace their similarties, and differences because they think that one may be a fan of the others.  They don’t put their artist against one another and all of the things we do. Jus like with Dawn (from Danity Kane), jus because she wore a headpieace she got to be copying Beyonce cause she did it first. Hell in that case everybody is copying someone because all the shyt they do please believe someone has done it before, you jus don’t know about it. And now since everybody act like Beyonce is the best thing since sliced bread, that is all record companies are looking for to fit the mole. So there can be this chick that has crazy REAL talent, but because she is a lil darker, hair isn’t long, and she actually wears clothes, they are going to be like “no, your jus not what we’re looking for.” I mean that shyt ain’t right and I’m calling all of my people to STOP with this bs, because it’s jus hurting us in the long run. Your voice does matter and we should start using it, cause if WE don’t like it and not buy it They DON’T make money. And at the end of the day that is what is more important to THEM. I’m jus saying we have got to do better.

  • Ay

All black people do is complain.

    1) What other awards show showcases black acts? ill wait…………………………………………….

    2) I love Jilly from Philly but her last album was NOT the biz.

    3) It’s not BET’s fault that stars like Bey, Rih, and Jay think they’re too “elite” to show love to the show

I’m here for the Nippy tribute because NO OTHER tribute so far has satisfied me. Billboards’ was lame, Grammy’s was last minute, and I don’t see the VMA’s being all for her either.

    • not a fan

There’s nothing wrong with constructive criticism. If we wanna name problems i think black people are either too hard on ourselves or too nonchalant about our problems.
I agree with the author though. I’ve watched BET awards since it was born and I do see the decline. I can’t remember when the last time artists like Jay-Z, Beyonce’, Rihanna and etc. sat in the audience and these are black artists that consistently break records. The categories’ nominees are a joke, like Diamond, really? and they don’t showcase up and coming artists like they should. Time to reevaluate imo.

      • Ay

I definitely see the decline in the show, just like in all the rest of the shows. Part of that reason is because people like yall stan for lame performers. The industry isn’t as great. Add in the fact that BET’s budget is low and that is what you get. And again those artists you named, yall forget that CB beat Rih a few years ago, Jay is Rih’s boss, Bey is his wife, and Kanye is his bro, CB has performed at the last couple of shows so they  stayed away.

        • Chanda

you make it sound like CB is chasing everyone out of building, hence the show sucking. he doesn’t have that much power and shouldn’t be that much of a threat. those other artists just don’t show up because they have better things to do.

          • Ay

CB didn’t cause BET to suck, but if you can’t see the connect between him ruling the awards and Jay’s clique being mostly absent then you’re delusional.

            • msnaimah1985

But Jay’s clique has been absent from the BET Awards before this Rihanna and CB thing.

      • Ay

I definitely see the decline, but all award shows have declined. And those artists stay away partly because of CB, who has performed at the last couple of BET awards.

        • Netdandri

What are you talking about? Chris Brown doesn’t have that much power over these people’s lifes. Rihanna still hands out with and does music with CB, so how is she hidingfrom him at BET?

          • Ay

When does Rihanna hang out with CB? And in case you missed it her collab with him caused MUCH controversy. No Chris doesn’t control their lives but it’s all politics, Jay and his crew arent friendly with CB.

            • guest

I see what you are trying to do… BUT….. jay-z, Ye, Bey, AND CB, ALL attended and performed at the VMA’s last year…… so yeah. Chris has nothing to do with them not attending the BET awards.

    • Trisha_B

I really hope they don’t have Jennifer Hudson do the tribute for Whitney.
