Have you ever dated a man who was visually appealing but once he opened his mouth you realized, so sadly, that he wasn’t the brightest bulb in the box? It’s tragic. A pretty face will take you far but if that’s all you have to offer, it gets really old, really fast. It’s always nice to have some knowledge inside a pretty face. Check out the celeb men who meet the requirement.

Hill Harper

I’ve always had a little thang for Hill Harper and his smarts just strengthen the attraction. In addition to being a successful actor, he’s no dummy. It’s all in the genes. Harper’s mother was one of the first African Americans in the country to become an anesthesiologist. Harper went on to follow in his mom’s brainy footsteps by studying law at Harvard, (where he met a young Barack Obama). But one degree from Harvard just isn’t enough. He went on to earn a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard as well. Though Harper certainly has enough credentials to be a bit elitist, he still cares about the people. He’s constantly sending messages to the younger generation with his books “Letters to a Young Brother” and “Letters to a Young Sister” and even hosted an education special on MSNBC alongside Tamron Hall.

What’s better than a supa fine rapper turned actor, turned author? A supa fine rapper who’s socially conscious and rubs elbows with Dr. Maya Angelou. Having a mother who’s spent a majority of her life working in education, it’s no surprise that Common would be bright. In fact, the rapper went to college at FAMU, under scholarship, before he dropped out as a sophomore to focus on his music career. Clearly, that was the right decision but we can see how his intelligence, book and street smarts, influences the content of his music.

Michael Eric Dyson

Some people don’t get down with Dyson but I’ve been a fan of his work since high school. Dr. Dyson doesn’t let his Ivy League education, Princeton to be exact, get in the way of relaying his concepts to the people. He’s as comfortable talking about 15th century literature as he is about the impact Hip Hop has had on our culture. Not to mention, I dig the fact that Dyson is one of the people affiliated with the black church, he became an ordained Baptist minister at the age of 19, who agreed with President Obama in his support of gay marriage.

Marc Lamont Hill

This brotha is not hard on the eyes at all right, ladies? But a pretty smile is not all he has to offer. This academic, media personality and political pundit is everywhere. But he doesn’t let his career hustle get in the way of giving back. In addition to holding his own with Bill O’Reilly, Hill is dedicated to giving back to the youth as well. He teaches the young ones about legal rights, tries to improve literacy through his own organizations and is a professor at Columbia University.

Mos Def aka Yasiin Bey

If I had to choose an MC that most accurately embodies all of my musical tastes, it would be Mos Def. He’s a tad raunchy (Ms. Fat Booty). He can get you on the dance floor (Brown Sugar Fine), and he’s a romantic (Beautiful -Black Star Remix). But whatever persona he’s tapping into, he always keeps it real. His remix of Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “N***as in Paris,” transforming it to “N***as in Poorest” was much more relatable indicative of the plight of black people in this country and around the world.

Dr. Ben Carson

Have you ever wanted to just give a hug to someone you’ve never actually met in person? This is the best way to describe how I feel about Dr. Ben Carson. If you don’t know Carson became the first neurosurgeon to successfully separate Siamese twins. He then went on to become the director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins. As if saving children’s lives doesn’t make the man enough of a saint, he also spends his time traveling around the country sharing the secrets of his success with young people. I’ve listened to him a couple of times and he has some real gems, particularly his acrostic for the phrase “Think Big.” Carson says the words stand for

You’ve gotta admire a smart man with an uplifting message for the young ones. Don’t these men make you smile with your heart? Which other men make love to your mind?
