MN Exclusive: Eric Benét Discusses New Album and Explains His Ode To “Redbone Girl”

May 17th, 2012 - By MN Editor

Eric Benét is gearing up to release his next album, entitled “The One” and he stopped by the Madame Noire offices in New York City to talk about why he thinks this latest project is his “best work to date.” But we didn’t let Mr. Benet go without asking him about his eyebrow-raising song entitled “Redbone Girl.” He may have been uncomfortable with the question but he certainly didn’t shy away from answering it. Check out what he had to say.

His wife is not black and white. That gold digga is italian and egyptian. As far as the song goes, Its way deeper than Chocolate Legs because “in a moment” when the world is kickn him, he has legs to wrap around him so he can shake S*** off. Redbone goes deeper because she’s not loose. He’s just curious about her and he’s admitting he’s stuck on her. No matter what people say or think about his wanting her, he’s consumed and wants more so people can kiss his A. He wants her, loves her. He’s tellin us and her how amazing he’s feelin. I think that’s powerful. He’s lucky to finally find some good potential love. I wish them luck. His answer was whack just like wayne’s lyrics cause he was makin it up as he was talkin, trynta not blush about her. Sweet. He can’t and won’t let go of how she makes him feel. Have you seen his Redbone girl? hee hee. Bet his wife is pissed! Takes guts to write that then publish it. Maybe he’ll dump his wife and marry her!

    I don’t like him.

  • SAKITOME

doesn’t this chump have a sexual addiction? gtfohwtbs

  • Is It 5:00 Yet?

I couldn’t hear the volume on the video so I will reserve judgement lol.

  • Invisiblegirl777

Come on!  His wife is a lighter woman.  Why can’t he pay homage to her?? Geesh!

  • Kashbmaryd

Eric Benet’s stuff is hot. If he made a song about an alien chick it would be hot. And isn’t a redbone a mixed girl? Because that is certainly the description of his last two wives.

    • HabibtiKhalisa

No, a “redbone” is a light-skinned black woman, like Trina or Nivea.

  • carla

Eric’s wife is named Manuela Testolini her dad is Italian and her mother is black. She was once married to Prince.

    • Ms.Blue

Exactly! She’s Other! Not black or white or any one specific race.

    • L.A.

She would mark biracial or black on the census form but her taste tends to run on her black side.

      • L.A.

They don’t make people mark anything on the census form they simply give some folks the option to claim more than one race.

  • carla

His wife is not an “other” there is no such thing as a humna being called an “other”. He is married to a woman who happens to be part black and part white.

    • Mls2698

LOL, that’s what they would make her mark on the census form.

The problem is black women still seeking black men’s approval.  His wife is not light or dark skinned black.  His wife is other.  Black women put way more stock into what black men think of them and in actuality they dont when they have money.  Save yourself some pain and stop worrying about what black men think about light or dark women and celebrate yourself cause most of them with money dont even chase the “redbones” anymore.  Wow, I had not even thought about that.  Average white women are competition for light skinned women when it comes to black men with money.  Actually white and other are actually beating light women for RICH black men.  At least with dark women we know that we were not used as the temporary substitutes

  • Mls2698

The “redbone” stuff used to get on my nerves. Most brothers would knock over a dark sister to get to the red one before brothers started chasing the ” beckys.”  I guess Eric has to give them cred since no one is chasing the reds anymore (not even him). Anyway, I’m caramel, so, I guess I should stay out of it. Love a “black” brother, though.

  • Ms.Blue

Yea, I think you all just want to start some mess Madamnoire. As long as he isn’t saying one shade is better than the other I don’t see a problem with his song.

    • Mls2698

He has no preference. Even Halle knows that.

  • Gmarie

i mean..he had a song out a few years back called chocolate legs (with a really hawt video I might ad) I don’t see the big deal. he can like one but not the other? men generally just like beautiful women no matter the shade.

    • shelshel

Thanks for saying the words I was about to say. I’m chocolate and find this issues childish. Eric Benet is still the man who can sing his butt off and have anyone notice his wife is NOT chocolate. Keep making redbone music and I’m still going to nod and bump my head to your lyrics.

PS, I could see if he had disrespected chocolate women but he didn’t so why even report this???

      • UK lady

Ditto to both of you. MN are trying to start a little controversy. We all know his history and know that he loves all kinds of women per se. lol

        • mssmith

Ladies the issue is not about her color.  The issue, for me, is the demeaning way he describes “his redbone girl”.  She is loose, with a reputation, who gave it up quick but now he is sprung and don’t care about her reputation. I am not even going to deal with Lil Wayne’s verses cause he is an idiot.  I bumped to Cholate Legs because she was his woman/wife and he came home to her for healing after the world wore him down.  It was a lovely tale.  He uses words and descriptors that are dehumanizing.  Get it?????  This is no anthem.  I have always been an Eric Benet fan but he deserves this criticism.  His response is even whacker.
