We’re such on a need-to-know-everything basis with celebrities these days, that it just feels right that Mariah Carey let us know about her personal life, marriage and, um, recent weight gain. We can get album news from “Billboard.” But as much as I would like to hear her say that she is indeed pregnant, I’m really feeling her decision to keep her business to herself as long as she possibly can.

As obvious as her impending maternity may be, Mariah and husband Nick Cannon have the right to not talk about such a personal and sensitive condition. Mariah is doing what any mom–or woman who wants to be a mom–does, she’s protecting her “alleged” lamb.

This latest round of pregnancy rumors surfaced because of photos released of Mariah performing at the 2010 Barretos International Rodeo in Brazil. There’s no doubt that her body is changing, and after her shows in Brazil, she even tweeted: “Seriously,I really do love it here, beautiful people inside and out! Tonite was tuff 4 me 4 personal reasons, but U got me thru! L4L”

How stressful must it be to take care of yourself and worry about paparazzi trying to get a shot of your tummy? I can see why she went to Sao Paulo.

But Nick is right there to back her up, addressing the rumors, while remaining mum:

“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it time and time again – when my wife feels like talking about whatever she wants to talk about, you will hear it directly from her,” Cannon, 29, said on his radio show Monday on New York’s 92.3 FM. “We all know it’s extremely personal, and it is for a woman to deal with things with her body, and especially when dealing with the idea of childbirth and all that stuff.”

Christina Aquilera, Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Hudson, and most recently Alicia Keys, also kept their pregnancies private for as long as they could. All women, whether celebrity or not, deserve the chance to experience maternity in the way they feel most comfortable without the pressure of having to write up a press release…and quench our little thirst for baby news.
