Where They Do That At? Parents Shave Daughter’s Head, Force Her To Do Laps In Diaper For Bad Grades

The answer to that question is Minnesota. There, mother Stephanie Brotena and her live-in boyfriend, Darnell Landrum, called themselves punishing their daughter for bad grades when they publicly humiliated her in their neighborhood. But now they are the ones facing punishment after police officers arrested them and took their children into custody for their antics.

The couple has been charged with malicious punishment after they forced their 12-year-old daughter to run around their neighborhood doing laps and picking up garbage in nothing but a tank top and an adult diaper—after they shaved her head. They said they told the girl she’d be on “diaper duty” if she didn’t do well in school and this was their way of keeping that promise.

According to Fox, at least 50 people watched the humiliating spectacle until someone finally called the police. When they showed up about 30 minutes later, the girl was said to be crying and hysterical. Her parents on the other hand, still didn’t grasp the severity of the punishment—or their own. According to Police Lt. Mike Monsrud:

“What is perhaps the most disturbing is that all the way up to the jail, the couple was laughing and joking, not believing they were involved in anything inappropriate. They questioned police involvement. They believed it was their decision as parents to discipline the girl.”

Now they won’t be doing much disciplining at all since the girl and her three siblings were taken into protective custody.  I’m pretty sure they’re done laughing now too since they face up to a year in jail if convicted of these charges. I’m thinking that might not be such a bad ruling in this case. What about you?

Was the parent’s punishment too excessive?

Discipline should match the behavior you are trying to change. What exactly did their punishment teach their child? As a result of their cruel & ridiculous punishment may forever scar their children. SMH!!!

A little harsh, but what does not kill you makes you stronger. Kids are much more resilient than we give them credit for. So what she will be made fun of later down the line at the end of the day her parents did not kill her and it was showing the had some concern and love for her.

    • Passionesquefreedom

That is the heaviest thing I’ve ever heard. Just because something doesn’t kill you does NOT mean it makes you stronger.

I am sure they are not laughing now, neither are the children being uprooted from their home. Its a no win situation. Some people just don’t know how to be par but by DCF It is clear they went to far with the diaper and shaving the head. I think being on trash detail would have been enough without shaving the head and wearing the diaper.  The mom on the cover of that magazine should be subjected to losing her kid. I am for breast feeding. I did it years ago. I was careful to keep covered up. What is the big deal about it now is it that moms want to just pull out their breast and not use a cloth diaper or blanket to cover up the breast. Wow this country is backward. Because that little boy on the cover look like he didn’t know what was going on. I am just saying she could kept that to herself. I don’t get the point.

I’m shocked that no one made a crack about the look on that guys face? I think he’s “sowwy”. Lol. He looks like a scared 4 year old!

Really? Wow, there are so many other child abuse, neglect…sexual abuse cases out there (most that are overlooked),  and we want to pry on this one? Do I agree with how the the parents handled that; absolutely NOT( thought it was foolish). I can see where they were coming from though. When it’s to the point that all the children have been removed from the home, now the parent(s) are facing up to a year in jail. To me, that’s a little excessive. I’m just thinking the consequences of the parents stupidity may cause more damage later down the line (if they are convicted). Parenting doesn’t come with a handbook but common sense will get you far in the parenting process. SMH…what a world. WHAT. A. WORLD.

That is so sick and twisted.

  • Ddww14

Excessive yes. Jail for them No! They need to have their heads shaved and have to run around the neighborhood with an adult diaper on, and pick up paper…Oh for about a month or two…smh!!

This is a bit cruel for the parents to do this her.

  • Momma79

Parents get punished for spanking there children. So, I do not think it was wrong @ all.

  • UKlovein

    this is obsurd!!!

      “Obsurd”? Are you kidding?

Just correct the person and move along….

There should be a license to parent a child…

Maybe they should’ve been TEACHING her and helping her w/ her homework so she wouldn’t get bad grade in the 1st damn place instead of trying to humiliate the poor girl….

    • Angelee

Exactly!!! I too wonder if the parents did all they could do to help their child improve her grades. Did they keep in contact with her teachers, check her homework, sign her up for tutoring, create a conducive environment for doing homework???

  • Candacey Doris

I don’t think they should have shaved her head. But I don’t think it’s bad enough the police should have gotten involved. Certainly taking the children away was excessive.

    • Half-pint67

I am personally glad that the teen was taken away from these nut jobs.

  • SMDH

What ever happened to a good old fashion butt whooping? I don’t care how old she is….well at least that’s how my mom did it.

    • activist1

My mom and dad too. Until they discovered the art of lecturing us half to death. After a while it was “can’t you just whoop me and get it over with???”

  • activist1

And I thought the lectures I got were torture…

  • Iluvm

Yes, they went a too far. I can see where they are coming from and what they were trying to accomplish. It can be frustrating when you are setting the positive example for your children and raising them in way they should go. It hurts any good parent heart when their child is doing the opposite of what you are teaching them and maybe they exhausted all the options they knew. Raising children isn’t easy. That’s not right to humiliate or abuse a child they should be punished for that, and sentenced to some parenting classes. But we don’t know that family story or know what the child has been taking her parents through. So let’s Pray for this family. Prayer goes a long way and can change any person and situation! Be Blessed everyone!

I read about this on a new site and I still can’t believe how truly mean it is.. I could never do something like that to any of my kids.. if they wanted to use embarrassment as a punishment then there are so many other ways to embarrass a pre teen.. it doesn’t take much trust me.. on top of that maybe her grades were bad because she genuinely didn’t understand the work.. get a tutor good grief.. and the guy ISNT EVEN HER FATHER..he told police that he is making a difference in these children’s lives by showing their mom how to punish them properly.. smh.. oh and there is another child that was made to sleep on the floor and eat like bread and water or something for a MONTH because of bad grades.. ridiculous

I think these people are a little crazy but I don’t think they’re as crazy as some foster parents, or touchy feely priests that these children will now be subjected to in the system. As parents we get a lot of slack for our children’s behavior but when we discipline them people want to get the police involved. SMH, its not disturbing to have a 5 year old on the cover of a magazine sucking a breast but its disturbing to make a preteen embarrassed and clean up her neighborhood? I bet if more people were “embarrassed” as teens in efforts to keep them on the straight and narrow path we would have alot less adults in jail.

Are you mad? People being victimised and humiliated in early life is one of the direct routes to anti social behaviour. No ones saying don’t discipline your children buut think about how your doing it and what you hope the child will learn from these actions.
Parents seem to forget they are the first teachers of children, if this child wasn’t doing well in school how is shaving her head and making her wear a diaper to pick up garbage whilst the whole neighbourhood watches going to taech her how to solve problems within her school lessons!? Come on!! If she didn’t do well at school there clearly something she’s not understanding but know she has to deal with a shaved head, ritual humiliation and teh foster care system on top of that? How well do you think she’s gonna do in school now!?

      • Msnaimah1985

TK, have you ever been a foster child? Have you ever been inside of Juvenile facilities? Have you seen this seasons episode of Couple’s Therapy on VH1 with DMX? My point is that familial relationships cannot just be dismissed in situations like this. Most times placing a child in state care lends them too way worse situations than the one described above.

……..And I’m mad? You can’t be talking to me *JillScottVoice*
