Twitter is the Devil: Why Celebrities and Twitter Aren’t a Match Made in Heaven

Twitter is the devil. 140 characters certainly makes one think so. The age of social media has exposed celebrities as being undeserving of the pedestals they’ve built their images upon. You can learn a lot about a person in just one tweet and these days, even that’s just too much information.

There used to be a time when stars held a certain aura about them. It was a mystique that added to their presence and was fascinating because fans always wanted to know more. That time has come and gone. In its place is an era where Ke$ha tweets a picture of herself peeing in the streets. Chris Brown posted a picture of himself taking a dump. Rihanna recently uploaded a pics of herself making it rain at a strip club. Don’t even get me started on all the ugly tirades these people go on their Twitter beefs about the most obscure things. Very little has been left to the imagination.

Celebrities have become stunt queens chronicling every last minute of their lives. Their every indulgence has become public consumption. Even their good intentions are an exercise in vanity. The Digital Death Campaign a few years ago had celebrities lying in coffins and declaring themselves dead on social media until enough money was raised for “Keep A Child Alive.”  The “dead” quickly rose from their virtual graves and were updating their statuses before the monetary goal was reached. The efforts were undercut by the sheer narcissism. The world wide web still remembers just as it holds onto the memory of Rihanna and Ciara battling it out on Twitter over who could book a stage. And who could forget Chris Brown, Frank Ocean and Tyler the Creator going at it, calling each other b**** a** n****s and apes? There was also the time when even Jennifer Hudson threatened to go Chi-town crazy on a fan. From a purely entertainment standpoint, one could sit in front of their computer screens with a bag of popcorn and just refresh for the next few hours. However, when your antics are what starts to get you page views instead of an actual craft, there’s an issue.

It’s easy to insist that celebrities are upending conventional wisdom by putting their business on front street. They assume control by not pushing a phony perfect image. They’re being real but Dave Chappelle wasn’t lying when he said keeping it real can go wrong. It’s not always the best look; inviting the world into your most personal business and drama just gets the side eye more than a standing ovation. When that does happen, a lot of these stars tend to push back by telling the media to mind its own…even though they made their exploits public.

Beyoncé is called boring because she doesn’t tweet her every bowel movement. She’s only begun utilizing Twitter for professional purposes and is employing Tumblr to share family snapshots. Every star doesn’t need to follow her model and play it safe PG-13 style. At the very least, there should be a happy medium. It seems the more we know, the more some look at celebrities as people they actually know. But for others, the more we know, the less we can take their antics.

In the back of everyone’s minds, we like to think that these stars are just like us. We just don’t always want to see how much.

I feel the same way about twitter and reality shows, they’ve really changed the way I think about singers, actors, and especially athletes and their “wives” for the worst!

  • Lcole73

Celebrities, celebrities, celebrities, WHO CARES!!! DANG! They are people with money who think they rule the world and why do you all constantly feed into this CRAP!!!

    • shelshel

Concur, I’m honestly tired hearing the same old crap about these deranged celebrities. Honestly it would be nice to read a website with just a “little bit” of celebrities’s gossip (that is worth reporting in the first place) and the rest is dealing with everyday folks. But I guess I’m asking too much. Smh @ the internet, celebrities, and reporters.

  • Hyh

nomore excuses for Chris Brown…i use to feel bad for him but im done…that boy is tapped and that comment about seeing the devil is crazy…he probably isn’t even lying to…that life must be crazy…

The internet is not the problem. I have facebook, twitter and never once did I put my private personal life on there or act out of line. Some people use social network as an opportunity to  express their true feelings, things they will never say face to face. These celebrities get tired too, that they have to act perfect all the time, knowing they also have feelings and their bad moments.  Honestly, people need to get off Chris Brown. He’s an example of many black males out there who have a lot of anger issues, the result of not having positive male figure around, not knowing how to act or deal with situations. I’m sure, he’s gone to therapy, and he should continue to go and learn to control his frustration and handle it better. He’s talented, young, talented and seems like a normal young adult. Let’s move on.

      Very well said.

This article is on point. Twitter is like the devil’s playground which is why I don’t log onto it anymore. There’s nothing but a bunch of narcissistic, attention-seekers on there. I don’t know who’s worse, the celebs or wannabe celebs/regular folk. These modern day celebs have no decorum, couth, or professionalism AT ALL! The wannabe celebs/regular folks always like to start mess. There’s just entirely too much ignorance on there for my taste.

Wow, I had no idea he was so crude and classless….  I respect octomom more than this idiot.

If u or I posted a pic of us taking a crap on twitter; we will b mocked.
Celebrities do it and can make money with that attention.  It is….refreshing to learn that Beyonce (who will sell hair dye while wearing a wig) uses Twitter as a tool of communication instead of beef.

    • yolo

Actually Beyonce doesn’t use twitter at all she only used it once in 3 years to announce her new website.

Great piece! You hit the nail on the head with this one. Don’t forget when Jill Scott decided to go back and fourth with one of Nicki’s “Barbz” over some randomness. Just… why?

Funny how the only example you used was from Chris Brown….I personally think Twitter, FB, Tumblr and or Instagram is not the devil is the people that choose to log on a make it a negative thing that make it the devil… So many people are aiming for the title of The Ultimate Cyber Celeb nowadays.. is kinda sad.

    • Love_Sexy

I agree with you 100%…….The internet is not the problem its the people who use it…..Celebrities are just being themselves just like regular people behave…..Unfortunately because they are in the spotlight they have the public and media watching them.

lol at frank ocean “reminds me of a young sisco or Ike Turner”
ironically chris brown pulls an ike turner via twitter,

  • TiffanyRayne

I’ll be honest. I think regular people are worse than these celebs sometimes. You can’t make up what those peole do for 3 minutes of attention. The only reason these celebs seem to get more light, so to speak, put on their mistakes and flaws, is because everything is sensationalized and magnified about their lives. Unfortunately, no privacy comes along with an entertainer’s job description. I’m saying they don’t bring it on themselves sometimes. But overall, the internet does not need to be in certain people’s homes and smartphones.

    • Jadonnie-ava-marie

I know regular people are the worst  on Twitter it has some of these dudes and chicks thinking that they are famous because they have a few thousand follwers. I have never had any social networking page of any kind in my life social networking to me is for people who are insecure and need attention.

  • kotano89

OMG! This article is so on point.

  • shelshel

Good topic but your late! Everyone knows that celebrities are “humans” just with a lot of cash. They make mistakes probably every second the only people who put these celebrities on a pedestal is their managers (of course) and insane ppl. I’m not stating that all celebrities are bad and should be not be respected nor adored. I’m just simply saying that why be in shock when you “really” see the individual TRUE colors.

Lol, and what about facebook? And why didn’t you talk about regular folks and how they do the exact same thing and sometimes even take it a bit further by getting physical??? The internet itself is the Devil but people over look it. Oh well, to each it is own.
