Huh, What? Newsweek Dubs President Obama “First Gay President”

May 14th, 2012 - By Veronica Wells

These magazines are getting more and more salacious as the days go on. First there was Time’s controversial breastfeeding cover and now Newsweek is following suit with a cover crowning President Obama as the “first gay president.” Clearly, President Obama is heterosexual so the cover with its headline is rubbing people the wrong way. One news anchor on CNN even argued that since some people still believe that the president is not a Christian and that he wasn’t born in this country, when he’s presented evidence to the contrary, is it really wise to make yet another false statement about him?

Let us know what you think about the cover and check out what the author of the cover story, openly gay political blogger Andrew Sullivan, had to say about President Obama’s announcement and what effect it had on him at Eurweb.com.

yeah, that’s kinda tacky. they could have easily just had a picture of obama with the rainbow halo, and his now-legendary quote from the interview with robin.

  • Kashbmaryd

Well, in case everyone forgot, they did call Bill Clinton the”first black president”. So in that case, it actually makes since that they would call Obama the”first gay president”.

In all honesty it doesn’t bother me at all. I’m just intrigued is all. Is Newsweek lying in general bother you? Have you been bothered over their other lies they have probably printed in the past on other topics? Im going to take a leap of faith(crosses fingers) and assume it’s not Newsweek’s lie that bothers you, it’s the fact that Obama was called gay that bothers you. And real question is why should it bother you?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JAI4SRENU2A5WKRTELXXYJPDSI Kayla

It doesn’t bother me. if it’s half true, then the other half would be a lie.  The real question is why is Obama being called gay bother you so much? is it because it’s Newsweek printing a lie? Does Newsweek printing lies in general  bother you? Are you equally concerned about the other lies they have probably printed on other topics? Or is it the fact that this lie has something to do with something you don’t agree with? Then and only then is it an issue.

    • FromUR2UB

      And??

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JAI4SRENU2A5WKRTELXXYJPDSI Kayla

he’s been called much worse by much worse people. It’s hardly that serious

  • IllyPhilly

Seriously I’m waiting for Obama to snap and say, “I done told y’all muthaf**kaz 9 or 10 times to stop f*cking wit me!” Just once that’s all.

  • Rah Truth

Ok. We all know he isn’t gay. But, good eye-catcher! Most of his voters are gay and or gay supporters. So, this was a very smart move on his part, especially since Romney said he does NOT support gay marriage. That’s really what it’s gonna come down to. Watch and see….

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JAI4SRENU2A5WKRTELXXYJPDSI Kayla

It’s a magazine article, it’s meant to grab attention and stir controversy. So I say mission accomplished in that aspect. I’m pretty sure if you read the article it has nothing to do with him actually being gay.

    • FromUR2UB

So, any tactic that accomplishes the goal of grabbing attention is fair game?  First of all, it’s a lie, and it’s posed as a statement as though it’s fact, which is journalistically unethical.  Newsweek has been a respected publication, so resorting to this kind of thing tarnishes that reputation somewhat.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JAI4SRENU2A5WKRTELXXYJPDSI Kayla

if that is your problem, then you need to take your complaint up with every single magazine. At the end of the day they are there to sell magazines. Point. Blank.

        • FromUR2UB

It should be your problem also.  Newsweek is not the Enquirer, so everyone should have a problem with it fabricating information under the guise of news.

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JAI4SRENU2A5WKRTELXXYJPDSI Kayla

And it’s not a problem to me. Because I realize that he isn’t gay. And I don’t let petty things upset me. And why is it that there is an uproar over him being called gay, as if being gay in itself is a horrible thing? The only reason it’s a problem is because im guessing homosexuality is something you don’t agree with. We all know he isn’t gay, but were you equally upset over the fact that he was called the first black president? When he’s not black either? So it’s ok for him to be called black but not gay? Is that right?

            • FromUR2UB

Why isn’t he black?  He looks black.  He has the hair texture of black people.  He produced children who look black.  He is looked upon with all the scorn a black man receives from some whites.  He is as black as any other African-American.

              • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JAI4SRENU2A5WKRTELXXYJPDSI Kayla

He isn’t technically black. He is biracial. Your concern wasn’t over how he looks or seems to others it’s over accurate information printed in magazines. Correct?

                • FromUR2UB

Then by your definition, most African-Americans aren’t black, because we are not purely black.  But, we are still considered black because that is the way we appear.  He looks more black than white, and if he identifies himself as black, then what is there for anyone else to decide?  At least calling him black is half true.  Why does that bother you more than the complete lie?

i feel like newsweek is trying to play catch up with time magazine. this cover would’ve been OK without the “the first gay president” headline. for the sake of controversy, that was tacky. just tell the story…
