Your friends have been telling you that you’re bougie (derived from bourgeois), but you deny it. You simply have distinctive tastes and enjoy nice things, and there’s nothing wrong with that. That doesn’t make you bougie, does it? When you think bougie, you think of Toni Childs on Girlfriends or Hilary Banks on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. But it’s more to it than these TV characters who were poster children for sadity-ness. Don’t think you’re bourgie? Well, check out these 7 signs to see if you actually are.

    Years of observation has taught me that braggarts are the loudest, most boisterous and above all the most insecure, but they are also the least authentic.  This article reminds me of the girls I grew up around who picked at anyone who didn’t have on name brand everything, yet as you grow up and realize that these were the same chicks who’s moms were living off of their drug dealing boyfriends while collecting govt. checks.   We are good at pretending and much too content with our knockoffs and $500 weaves. It doesn’t seem to faze us that we aren’t making a single penny in profit off of the crap we spend our money on, all while making other folks factually and monetarily rich while we stand in front of the cameras and in our peers pretending to be.

     I liked the article only because I never really knew how to spell the slang word ‘bougie.’ Haha
    Now I know.
    I don’t know about the rest of the world but Chicago is chuck full of these fake type of females. There are some gems out there too but there are a lotta ‘bougie beasts’ lurking around too. I think it’s gotten even worse since the advent of ‘Reality’ TV.
    Do yourself a favor and ignore these hos and kick it with genuine and original people.

    I understand what the article was saying but bourgeois is just another way of saying middle class. By definition, this article is wrong because most middle class people I know are struggling these days.

    This article is a BIG MISS ! This just described a bunch of WANNA B’s. The women described here are the type who would travel all the way to France, then eat at McDonalds, hang in the club all week and never set foot in a museum. What about trust funds, golf/tennis/swim club memberships, exclusive schools, equestrian (like Phaedra), NEVER having to work, etc. Now thats bougie.

    “Bougie” is a state of being, it is a confidence and
    self-assured state that one possesses. It has more to do with how one carries themself,
    and less to do with labels, superficial things, and outside judgment / ridicule
    of people who may have less; a “Bougie” Girls can rock anything and bring:
    class, grace, and sophistication to it! “Bougie” Girls stand up! :-P

        Touché’! And I’ll have to check it out. This was an oversimplified
        “definition;” the main points that I wanted to elicit with my post are that
        being “Bougie” is about more than having material things, and being “artificial,”
        or a “Poser.” Also, my last statement about “Bougie Girls” being able to rock
        anything and still look refined is to allude to the fact that labels don’t define
        the “Bougie” state; I can wear less seemingly obvious attire and still be “Bougie”
        based on my innate persona.

    Eff that because I talk a tad bit proper than people I grew up with I was called bougie I’m not even materialistic ….. I have however been into all kinds of music … don’t eat pork or any red meat occasionally go vegan and my fam acused me of being Bougie … FYI Bougie is more evidence that black people can not accept each other differences. I know Hood Chicks that do the same things as listed above including being picking EXample*** I only mess with thugs, Redbones, Rappers etc…  you get my point. They get they hands on some loot they be wearing louboutin blowing money fast.

    I’ve always been materialistic :/ I’m not proud of that trait I’ll have to blame my mother for that one. I love nice things but I don’t flaunt what I have anyone into fashion or luxury labels can tell. My closet is to die for!!!!! Work hard and play even harder and gifts are always appreciated and nice. Wink!!!

    Authentic “Bougies” have no need to proclaim their labels- in fact- they are more interested in stretching their money- investments, properties, stocks/bonds, etc….

    The traits on this articles list and the traits of wanna be bougie. 

    People with old money never flaunt or carry on.  They tend to have a realness about themsselves, and they tend not to waste there money on superficial things on aan ongoing basis.

      I think that’s precisely what “bougie” is–new money!  Think about it.  No one calls the Kennedys or the Rockerfellers bougie.  The cast of any Real Housewives show, however–bingo!

    Wow…ok..where do I begin? I have to say all of these listed except for throwing the “over-the-top” parties and the “to be seen” socialite does not fit me. Everything else on the list pretty much does. Personally for me, it’s about choosing to take care of me and quality..I’d rather pay for a label $400- $700 (which is not often) for a pair of shoes that I can keep over the years as opposed to buying a pair of kicks from the mall (which is nothing wrong with shopping at a mall) that I have to throw away because of the shotty craftsmanship. Also, avoiding the hood? I know other sistas who are not bougie at all , who avoid the hood at all times I think it has to do with safety (sarcasm). And lastly, discriminating tastes when it comes to men…as long as the gentleman is a hardworking, caring and just a good man overall , I’m not going to care of his status, car, job or wallet size…However, I think ALL women should have some discrimination when choosing a suitable mate.
