Another excuse for why men can’t be faithful, but all eyes are on the women, too.

This time it’s your earning power, Madames. A recent study says that when you make much more money than your man, he’s more likely to cheat on you. But in the same token, high-powered, high-earning women are most likely to cheat when their men earn less.

“With women, they were less likely to engage in infidelity the less money they make relative to their husband,” said study author Christin Munsch. “But for men, the less money you make relative to your spouse, the more likely you are to engage in infidelity.”

So is all fair in love and money?

Being the breadwinner in a family doesn’t give you the right to cheat, but for men who earn less, it seems their egos come into play and, as we’ve heard so many times before, they are replacing feelings of inadequacy with unfaithfulness. For women, there’s power and freedom in making the most money in a relationship, so they feel the need to flex.

Though I have never been in this situation myself, I know a few married women who are the main or sole breadwinners in their households. Are they stressed? Most of the times, yes. Do they stray outside of their relationships? Not that I’m aware of.

Likeliest of all to cheat are men who are totally dependent on their partner’s income: they’re five times as likely to be unfaithful as guys who earn the same as their partner, according to the research, which was presented at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association.

Men and women are going to cheat regardless of the financial situation, so let’s not use this study as a reason to aim low for ourselves, ladies. Get those degrees, earn those titles and make that money. I figure, if he can’t handle the fact that you’re making mucho money, then there’s reason to discuss his feelings and reason for you to understand that he may feel less than deserving of you. Two loving and respectful people can work through this issue. But it’s not your job to dumb-down, so he can feel better about himself. Hopefully, he’s earning something and not sitting on the couch eating Doritos all day.

How many of us know that couple?
