The actor Laurence Fishburne and his daughter Montana seem to have a complex relationship. Most of us know that Montana is hoping she can follow in her father’s footsteps (sort of) and become a famous Hollywood superstar. The problem is that she wants to get there through pornography. Well, the latest in this public display of exhibitionist family drama is the news that Laurence is punching back hard at his daughter, saying that he’s done with her and that “no one uses their real last name in Adult Videos.”

The plot gets deeper and sadder, as the world is left wondering why the daughter of a famous actor feels the need to resort to pornography to get an opportunity to be in the movies. Did Will Smith’s kids consider this route in order to become successful? While Montana claims that Kim Kardashian explained how a sex tape really helped her career, she should learn the difference between having a sex tape and being an all-out Adult Videos queen. Celebs can have a sex tape and still be mainstream. But once you’ve been defined as a Adult Videos star, no one wants to touch you (except other Adult Videos stars, of course).

I am wondering if Montana really understands the long-term implications of her serious career move. A sex tape made at the age of 19 is going to be around when you’re 39. Also, her father is right that using her last name is an incredibly bad idea, especially since everyone knows it. I mean seriously, there are so many creative ways to use the word “Montana” as it relates to sex that I couldn’t help but wonder if Fishburne’s daughter is using her real name in order to get back at her father. I am sure the executives in the company Montana gets naked for are licking their chops with all of the marketing possibilities.

There are additional brand destruction implications of Montana’s crazy career move. First, she is negatively impacting the value of the Fishburne name, the same way that Paris Hilton undermined the Hilton family name with her behavior. The name Fishburne will no longer have just one meaning after Montana has made her first few films. Secondly, Montana’s brand as an actress will never have the same value it would have had if she’d spent time learning her craft rather than showing people that she knows how to do what everyone else does in bedrooms across America.

All-in-all, I feel sorry for both Laurence and Montana, and I don’t see this relationship getting better anytime soon. What is also sad is that in about 3 or 4 years, Montana is really going to regret what she’s doing right now. Her father can already see her mistakes, but I doubt she’ll listen to his warnings.
