SAD: Texas Nurse Kills New Mother and Steals 3-Day-Old Baby

Verna McClain is facing capital murder charges in the state of Texas for the shooting death of 28-year-old wife and mother Kala Golden. The nurse and mother of three is said to have shot Golden in the parking lot of a suburban Houston pediatric clinic and then took the woman’s 3-day-old son, Keegan Schuchardt. According to McClain’s sister, whom the infant was found safe with hours later, McClain planned to adopt the boy.

Defense attorney E. Tay Bond said lawyers will be reviewing McClain’s mental state. She currently plans to plead not guilty, and bond added that a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity was “certainly something we will be visiting.” It seems McClain had suffered a miscarriage and was desperate to find a baby after telling her fiancé that she’d given birth to their child. McClain’s court-appointed lawyers said she was confused, visibly upset, and mumbling to them during a brief court hearing held earlier yesterday.

“It will take a while … for her to have an appreciation for what the situation is, if she ever does appreciate it,” Bond said after the hearing.

A bond hearing for McClain was delayed until Monday to allow lawyers more time to review the case. Until then, McClain will be held without bond in a jail cell by herself under 24-hour watch. Bond said he didn’t believe any of her relatives had visited her and he hopes McClain is granted a reasonable bond so she can take care of her three children, who are being looked after by a relative in Houston.

Capital murder carries a possible death sentence, but Montgomery County District Attorney Brett Ligon said his office hasn’t decided whether to seek the death penalty yet. Bond and McClain’s other attorney, Stephen Jackson, said they don’t think that punishment would be appropriate.

“One of the things they have to prove is future dangerousness,” Bond said. “When you have an isolated incident with somebody who has no prior criminal history, it is very difficult to prove that that person would be a future danger.”

    Having a miscarriage can be very traumatic. After mines all I could do was talk about having children. I wouldn’t have gone to the extremes of this woman, but a miscarriage is not easy to deal with. This woman may have been sick, but this was unjustifiable. Death it is.

    She MUST be crazy or awfully slick.  1) Her mind can’t be right to steal someone’s baby. 2) I have never heard of a black person stealing a white baby to keep as their own, not even a nut.

    Black women have never had reason to want babies of other races because in most cases, we can easily have our own.  Neither of the articles I’ve read mention whether she was visibly pregnant.   As someone else mentioned here,  maybe she stole the baby for trafficking.  That would make more sense than thinking she could pass this baby off as her own.   If trafficking is the real case, she probably made up this ridiculous story to throw police off the trail and protect other people involved.

    Very little in the broadcast media about this…why?  Why the excuses for this reprehensible evil act?  Thy guy (assumed) driving the car…no pictures no mention.  Why?

      Who’s making excuses for this act, and what does it have to do with the Trayvon Martin case? 

      What angry little people you are.  That’s what got Mr. Martin killed.

    What was she thinking?  She obviously is a sick person.  Who did she think she was going to fool and convince that this was her baby.  Even if her fiance is white, there was no way anyone was going to believe a red-headed white child was hers!!! What a sad story and another sad example of how the mentally ill are not properly monitored, treated and looked after!!!

    She needs the death penalty.  It has been reported that she staked out at the hospital looking for the first woman with a baby.  She then shot this woman 3 times in the chest and drug her with her car as the woman was fighting for her baby.  She left her screaming in the street.  She knew what she was doing.  And she definitely should not be around her own or any other kids.  She’s evil

    While she could very well be suffering some kind of post-partum psychosis following her miscarriage, her violent act cost a husband his wife and their children their mother.  I don’t believe that she should escape with simple medication and hospitalization.  Her demonstrated tendency to extreme and dangerous behavior will make her a risk to the public.  Clearly, she belongs in prison.

    She already had three children so it’s not as if she never experienced being a mother so this is just nuts. She deserves the death penalty or to stay in prison for the rest of her life for killing that woman and destroying that baby’s life who will never know his mother. She is obviously crazy.

    This woman has to be crazy.  She was going to try to pass off this white baby as her ex husband’s kid! You know she snapped! I’m praying for everyone involved, obviously more so for the victim and her family

    I saw the news reporting on this story and the child she ended up kidnapping was white, not mixed, but white.White as light. The woman who had the miscarriage is clearly a dark skinned woman and so is her fiance. This woman is seriously delusional in thinking that she was going to be able to pass that kid off as hers, let alone thinking she was not going to be caught. Desperation is something else…..

    Suffering a miscarriage can be traumatic to some people. Not saying what she did is right by no means, but we really don’t know what her state of mind was. Something surely had to make her snap to even think that she could get away with walking around with a white baby (ding red flag).  How many black people are adopting white kids so there is no way anyone would believe this story and doing in Texas, everybody knows that will give you the death penalty. My heart goes out to the both families. Not only did the 3 year old lose his mother, Ms McClain’s children lose as well. We need to pray for both sides, its just so sad!

    All this just to keep a man. Plus she did this in Texas, she’s totally getting the death penalty. She could have just adopt or hire a surrogate, now the poor baby will never get to know his mother. My prayers goes out to the deceased woman’s husband and their other kids and family.

    Why did she have to kill the woman for her baby? So many young girls have babies in Texas and give the up for adoption. If she wanted a baby so bad just adopt.

       Going through the adoption process takes months, if not a year of visits to your home from the county case worker, adoption classes that you have to pass in order to be eligible and other screenings. How do I know? Because my mother was an adoption caseworker. This lady should have just been honest. It all goes back to women thinking that a baby can save a relationship. If her fiance was down for her, then baby or not, he would have been there. A baby can’t solidify a situation that is already unraveled. As a mother of a 6 month old, she should get the death penalty. Insane or not, there’s a baby boy who will never get to know his mom and a mother who will never get to love and raise her son.

    They need to go through the charts of all of her previous patients because there is no telling how crazy this woman is; she could have been doing horrible things at work, too. Why is it that people don’t find out about these ill minded individuals until they act out? I know everyone has that “strange” co-worker……that’s the one who has potential to act out! She is a nurse? How? What? Who? No!

      Though we don’t have all of the details yet & may never have them, it wouldn’t surprise me if this woman was involved in the baby black market. There is said to be considerable money to be made from this terrible trade, especially in light of the Russians shutting down international adoptions of their babies, leading to fewer white babies available in the US. It would make a whole heck of a lot more sense than using the excuse of covering for a miscarriage by trying to pass off a white baby as the offspring of a black couple. I think this story is a backup story that had been hatched in advance or just after the murder, should she be caught, to make her seem insane & get off with a lighter sentence, rather than involve other persons or an entire black market ring. Just speculating.
