Self Destruction: Are You Your Own Worst Enemy?

When I was a young girl, a visiting pastor came to my church and preached a sermon entitled:  ”Is it a Demon, or a Bad Decision.”  Even though I don’t remember the pastor’s name, I remember that sermon almost word for word.  He told the congregation that too many times when things go wrong in people’s lives they are quick to try to place the blame on outside forces (friends, family, coworkers, bosses, the devil, you know, the normal things) instead of taking an introspective look inward and realizing that sometimes when things go wrong, it’s not everyone else, it’s because of our own bad decisions.

There will be times when things will get stagnate, or digress in our lives and when we’re searching for answers as to why that is, maybe the first place that we should search should be ourselves.  Here are seven ways that the problems that we face have origins in our own bad behavior.

Great article. I feel inspired to get out of my own way. Thanks for that.

The two worst of this rogue’s gallery of personal failings are being lazy and letting your emotions dictate your behavior.  Everyone wants to live well, but you have to make yourself into a person who can earn that good life.  No one can do it for you.  It should be a matter of personal pride to develop your intellect and skills to their best level and use those to get ahead. You’re doing it for yourself and the benefits will accrue to you over a lifetime.  It is an effort well worth making.

People who let their emotions control them instead of the other way around will find that, sooner or later, it gets you into trouble.  Self control is one of the hallmarks of a mature adult.  It doesn’t mean you don’t feel anger, jealousy or any of the other self-destructive emotions; it means you learn to surpress your baser nature on order to interact appropriately in civilized society and get on with the real business at hand.

Blaming others for your unwillingness to do the hard work of self-improvement and self-control demonstrates a clear inability to accept personal responsibility for you own life.

Ladybug94 So you are learned and probably think you have mastered the kings English however you lack wisdom and understanding and let your emotions get the best of you, causing you to take a low blow, the only thing you can fine wrong is what you call my poor grammar, a foolish and shallow person can use good grammar and still be like James Brown said “like a dull knife you just can’t cut it, you are just talking loud and saying nothing”! Note Ladybug you mis spelled grammar check your self!

The worst self destructive trait I have seen in black women is being stubborn just to prove how strong they are, then what they perceive as a strength become ugly and a weakness.
