Protective Styling: Weaves

I love extensions! I wear them, a lot of my friends do, and it’s a great way to protect your hair. Of course there is the misconception that everyone that wears weave doesn’t love themselves and is insecure, but that is not the case. Well, it may be the case for some, but definitely not the majority. Some ladies wear weaves to add thickness, to add a little length, to play around with styles they can’t achieve with their hair, or to protect their hair from the outside elements.

I fall into the latter category. As a hair blogger I am always trying new things with my hair. I love giving my hair a break and letting it rest. With my hair cornrowed underneath, I am not messing with it hence my hair can be safe from the elements for a little while.

For a sew in weave, your hair is cornrowed either straight back, in a circle, or any other creative way your stylist braids them to make your hair lay flat. From there, extensions are sewn onto the braids. After that, you can style your extensions just like you would your hair.

Just because you have extensions, doesn’t mean you should neglect your hair! Make sure you shampoo your hair at least every 2 weeks with a moisturizing shampoo. You can get a bottle with a nozzle attachment, put some shampoo in it and mix it with water. From there I go through the tracks and squeeze the mixture throughout my scalp. I then massage it in with my fingers- but not too much so I don’t agitate the braids. I then rinse my hair and make sure to rinse in between the braids.

When conditioning, only apply cream conditioners to extensions and not to scalp. Cream conditioners can build up on scalp and cause itching or flaking. After rinsing your conditioner, follow up with a lightweight oil or a hair crème to moisturize your scalp.

I typically only wear my extensions for about 3 or 4 weeks at a time. They can definitely be left in but a lot of stylists suggest you don’t keep them in longer than 2 months.

Biggest Tip: Don’t forget to take care of your hair underneath!

I prefer Wigs, not your grandma wigs. LOL  I like the wigs because I can treat my hair and let it breathe at night. I’m transitioning from a relaxer & helps. The wigs allow me to switch it up depending on my ensemble. I like to order human wigs& add my little touch to fit my face. If your just trying out wigs, get something less expensive. They have really improved on the synthetic wigs. I had weaves before & had horrible experiences. I went to salons and paid top dollar for service & the hair. Only to take it out and my hair to be damaged.

I’ve never worn a weave, but I have seen the results (good and bad) of using it as a protective style.

two words: tree (or crochet, whichever floats your dinghy) braids. my hair grew like weeds underneath them, they’re the most manageable hairstyle that incorporates weave that i’ve ever tried, AND it doubles as a protective style for my natty hair sisters. : ) they last for about a month and i’m getting mine redone friday!

hmm – i’ve always wanted to try a weave but I think they are just so cost prohibitive!  I had good friend rock a weave as she readied herself for the big chop.  She had so much fun with it!  Hats off to my weave rockin’ sisters!

There are many reputable online stores that sell 100% indian hair by the ounce. I will assume that is what the model is wearing. Buying hair by the ounce is more cost effective, plus indian human hair can be washed and re-used many, many times. I love Indique brand. I’ts a haircare brand launched and run by a black woman. I’m pretty sure the owner ha been featured in MN.

My question is what kind of hair is that and where can I find it!
