A child is sat down. She is screaming. Why is she being forced to do this? It burns her scalp. It really burns her scalp. After this procedure, she is inserted into a high-temperature contraption. It is hot. She is crying. After being removed from the contraption, more heat is applied to her scalp. An irritated individual assures her that sobbing will only drag out the process. Finally, after many tears and many burns, the procedure is done. Look in the mirror, little girl. You are not hideous anymore. Smile — your hair is now straight.

What is everyone’s recent obsession with this natural hair movement!!! I just don’t get it

    • sweettea

I guess some people are tired of the relaxer process. It’s really easy to do it wrong and end up bald. Some of the people going natural will give up and get a perm some wont.

    • Kenedy

I’m natural. But i don’t obsess about it, im not constantly blogging about it, i don’t talk about it, i’m not in everyones face about it. I guess i also don’t understand the sudden obsession about it, maybe there’s a movement? Idk

      • Kenedy

Haha, actually you just mentioned its a movement…sorry, missed that part

People are realizing that they are beautiful just the way God made them. What’s not to get about that?

    • MissDiva05

People have their own reasons… Some no longer have the funds for the upkeep of relaxed hair; some are tired of conforming to unrealistic standards of beauty; some are simply curious about what they would look like with their natural hair…. It’s part of a personal journey of self-acceptance for me. I think it’s actually one of the most positive movements to touch the african american community. It sends a very strong, positive message of self-acceptance…. to me, at least.

Did you read the article? if so then I think it spells out the reasons perfectly. i went natural about 15 years ago. I didn’t know about any movement at the time. Like the author, relaxers were wreaking havoc on my hair and I finally thought “you know what, if I am ugly with no relaxer then I will just have to live with being ugly, ’cause these chemicals are BS.”

Luckily that turned out not to be the case. I am all about choices in life. And i know that how a woman wears her hair is personal. IHowever, I can’t help but equate relaxers to smoking. the more information that comes out about the harmful effects, how can poeple continue to do it?

As hard as it was for Blacks 50/60 years ago, i don’t blame them for straightening their hair just to get by and be accepted. Thank God times have changed!

What? Obession. Let me get this right. This is the hair that naturally grows out of your head. WOW…how ignorant of a statement. And the sad thing is you just dont know it. Some of you guys need to listen to what you say b4 you say it.
