Research Shows Black Women Simply Don’t Tolerate Racist Comments

Your colleagues may wonder why you always respond so strongly to racist comments—well, perhaps it is because you’re black. A new study shows that black women have a more direct response to racist comments compared to Asian women because of their cultural heritage. Black women do not tolerate these comments, and in fact, they never have.

Researcher Elizabeth Lee, a doctoral student at Penn State University, tells PsychCentral that their “work shows that racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds are sources of diversity that may explain why different targets of racism behave the way they do.”

“Our findings are consistent with Black women’s cultural heritage, which celebrates the past accomplishments of other Black confronters of discrimination, as well as Asian women’s heritage, which advises finding expedient resolutions in the name of peaceful relations,” she said.

The study, which was published online in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, continues past work’s observations of communication, emotional display and conflict management across various cultural backgrounds. Researchers tested responses to racism by asking both black and Asian women to use Instant Messenger (IM) to chat with other college students. These other college students were in reality research assistants in disguise told to make racist comments about dating.

Participants then completed a seemingly unrelated taste test study where they chose jellybeans for their prospective online conversation partners from good tasting flavors such as cherry and lemon, to bad ones such as ear wax and dirt.

Researchers found that black women were more likely to directly respond to the racist IM comments made by the conversation partners. In contrast, the Asian women were less likely to respond to the racism online, instead they chose the bad tasting jelly beans for their conversation partners to eat in what Lee calls “a sort of quiet revenge.”

In a separate test with different participants, Asian and black women were asked to imagine having a hypothetical conversation with a stranger that made racist comments and to give their response.

Again, Asian American were found to not directly respond to the comments while the black women verbally disclosed their disapproval of the racist statements. Despite the differences, Lee cautions the study’s observed not to be fooled by the indirect methods of the Asian participants.

“[R]esponding to racism in what seems like a passive or indirect way does not indicate being any less offended by the racism compared to responding behavior that is more direct and verbal,” she said.

I love the picture….and I love the research…..I am one of those black women who won’t tolerate the comments….and I never have.   Proud of it.

  • ChrisCYoung

So does this mean that when a black woman hears someone using words like C*****r or H***y it will set her off?

  • Gabemasol

This is such a stupid article and was clearly written by a black person. I have never wasted more of my valuable, white time as I have reading this nonsense.

One reason may be that racist stereotypes about Asians portray them as being hyper-intelligent, hardworking, and high achieving. This stereotype is often accurate. Why get mad about that.

Meanwhile, stereotypes about blacks portray them as being unintelligent, lazy, and criminal. Equally true, though I can see why it might make some blacks upset.

I think it has a great deal to do with history
as to why black women and Asian women respond differently to racism. Just recently I was reading for my history class that when it
came to minorities in this country during the 50′s-60′s, and possibly to this
day, Asians were considered to be the “model minorities” because they
willingly adopted American society norms as being “non-whites in a white
society” while African Americans were seen as troubling because they no
longer wanted to be treated as second class citizens in a nation they helped
built. I mean Dr. King was called a menace by white ministers when all he
was doing was conducted peaceful marches for equal rights granted to him. Yes,
Asian Americans did contribute to this nation and were treating unfair racially
(transcontinental railroad/ concentration camps during WWII), but on the count
that Asians came to this country willing, unlike the ancestors of today
African American women, they may choice not to respond to racial statements
because it doesn’t carry a heavy burden of knowing their ancestors were
property solely because of their skin tone. Asian American immigrants were able
to bring their culture’s dress, food, and spirituality while for African slaves they were forbade
from doing so. Asian women can look at Asia on a map and point to the exact
country their ancestors are from while African American women can only point at
Africa and call it a day. I may be off, but that’s what I get from the
    results of the research.

I have no clue why my response looks like that.

      • Billg

        It’s because you’re black.

  • StuckInDaMatrix

Is it me, or does that picture look stereotypical?

yep, you are not the only one to think that. This picture portrays black women as agressive. SMH

Any article with a title that begins “Research shows black women…” is an automatic “NEXT ARTICLE!” for me. It’s getting a bit overdone.

Are black women the only ones being researched these days? Because I’m beginning to see a whole lot of these articles about us everywhere (not just on black women’s websites either). The world must be secretly fascinated by us…and yes, I did take the the time to comment on an article that I didn’t bother to read :)

    • Msmykimoto2u

i was thinking the same thing

  • Ladybug94

I don’t like hearing racial comments, even if it’s coming from blacks.  That’s just too much negativity.

  • Dreama

Monique – IMMIGRANT Americans have generally done well in this country, better than americans, on such things as education, wealth building, business ownershipt etc. This is true of ALL immigrants, wheather they be from Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America, etc. By the third generation after immigration asian and other immigrant offspring tend to mirror American society as a whole, losing their immigrant advantage. This is because of the traits that they share as immigrants, NOT as a certain race. In other words if being Asian made you more likley to succeed why in the world would you be fleeing a country full of your own kind – often because of poverty, oppression, war, etc?

    • Missy

      Very interesting, thought provoking comment….

    • FromUR2UB

      Valid points.

  • Nakia Jackson

Directly addressing bigotry makes it possible for someone to reconsider their behavior. Saying nothing and giving them “ear wax” or “dirt” may make things more comfortable momentarily, but allows for a sickness in society to persist. I can understand how Asian American women might prefer to “go along to get along”, but it’s not a cost-free option.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JAI4SRENU2A5WKRTELXXYJPDSI Kayla

This only continues on the stereotype that black woman are confrontational

    • Tarot Chick

Not all confrontation is negative. I believe that it’s not the gun that kills, it’s the user.  Assertion allows things to move. Besides, some things need to be challenged, and ignorance should- imo- be challenged at EVERY opportunity. And yes, Im a Black woman :)  This is one cultural heritage that I think us Black ladies should be proud of.

      • Misheila

I am in total agreement with you……and before these “Asian Americans” get quick to further reinforce the negative stereotypes of black women and talk about their “great educational accomplishments”, they need to remember that a lot of the privileges that they now enjoy are because black people chose to speak up/confront, suffer and died. For the most part they just “kept quiet” and walked through the door broken down by the same “confrontational” black people.

    • Truth_Teller2012

Maybe there’s some truth to the stereotype.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/U6RZYJHRSNJJTUZQI44PLYOUN4 Monique

Asian Americans generally have done very well in this country. Instead of protesting all day, they fight back by studying harder than anyone and setting up small businesses everywhere! I think this study shows how they find indirect ways to address issues. Interesting…

    • Truth0312

To me, it’s not an either or situation.  I’ll agree that culturally, too many of our people don’t taut education as the key to success.  Particularly, in light of Asian Americans academic accomplishments; but not speaking up against unjust, racist comments is tacit approval, in my opinion.  I agree with Nakia on that one.  I also concur with Kayla that this study only reinforces negative stereotypes about Black women.  However, it does the same for Asian American women, as well, always docile and people-pleasing.  I encourage people of ALL races to speak out against racism, in any case.
