A chat with one of my co-workers about Fantasia’s alleged suicide attempt and the fact that she’s a mother made me think about motherhood. Was Fantasia thinking about the fact that she could have been leaving her young daughter without a mom? In the most selfish and/or giving of ways: Do we put ourselves first or our children first?

Then, I thought about a friend of mine who is married, but has yet to have a child. She wants a baby very badly, but also admitted that she loves her husband so much that she honestly didn’t know if she would love a child the same…or more.

To me, she was not only questioning her capacity to love, but her priorities.

Personally, I couldn’t imagine that she–or anyone–couldn’t love them both. Of course, you love your spouse in a different way than you love a child you birthed–or adopted–but you love them just the same.

I would say we have to take care of ourselves first so that we can be the best for our partners and children. But some women disagree…

Madames, tell us. Have you ever felt torn between who comes first: your spouse or your child?
