Non-MJBs: Popular Songstresses Who Don’t Exploit Their Fame To Push Products

We know that “selling out” is part of the entertainment game. We do. But in light of the recent Mary J. Blige chicken-peddling fiasco, we appreciate those celebrities who are simply about their art that much more. Who are we talking about? Oh, you know, the ones that are successful enough to command the requests of advertisers seeking to hawk their products but classy enough to turn down offers to sing the praises of soda, chicken or DirectTV.

There’s nothing wrong with hawking products. This is America after all. But something about seeing Erykah Badu plugging The Gap just reduces her mystique and authenticity…ya know? Here are a few artists who have refused to water down their brand (and essentially turn down lucrative offers) for the sake of their main gig: being an artist.

"sade"Many entertainers look to and respect Sade. Beyonce just recently gave her a shout out on her new Tumblr page. But one thing that many of these popular artists don’t have on Sade is her focused love of the music – it’s so focused that she doesn’t engage in PR or care about red carpet engagements and certainly doesn’t care for endorsements. If there is one powerful global influencer out there when it comes to music, it’s Sade. We’re sure that Coke and Pepsi and countless others have begged for her plugs.

When did cementing and expanding your brand equal selling out? If that’s the case MJ is te biggest sellout ever?  I see nothing wrong with an artist using their likeness or rep to make more money and build a brand.  It’s an honest living.

Sade is one of the last great TRUE artists of our generation…60′s-70′s babies..
Sadly, i would accept a commercial WITH a tune from Lauryn for some type of Prozac, Wellbrutin or something of that nature…
Um, yeah, Jill did the thing with the bras…
Adele…needs to at least try SENSA, Jenny or WW…for real…she is TOO YOUNG to be THAT BIG!

MN, come on. You know you were dead wrong for that. Starting to sound a little b_ssip_y. Come on. Was that really necessary? If it ain’t one thang it’s another.

I have 1,000,000,000% more respect for these singers you mentioned than Beyonce, Rihanna, MJB (after the BK koonfest) and Nicki Minaj, such sellouts and overrated humans. You forgot Esperanza Spaulding and India.Arie.

  • MXSTUDENT2012

OK MadameNoire you’ve really done it now! This article has really pissed me off, it’s so ridiculous and absurd. I mean what do you do all day? Cruise black and urban media to constantly find a reason to dissect, compare, bicker and complain about simple matters? Since when has endorsement deals for major artists take away from their craft and audience?!? If anything it helps to build their brand and expand their accounts with these lucrative deals for products. When Mary J. Blige endorsed Carol’s Daughter, Crest, and Mac you weren’t complaining. But because she wanted to have a sense of humor and go ahead and do a Burger King ad, it coonish, buffoonery, and deserves to discussed in every other post on your blog for the past week?!? People like the editor of this site cannot be pleased by any means. I mean if there weren’t any endorsements for black artists, you would blog about how unfair, racist and biased things are for them. It’s always one thing or another with you guys…smh

  • Chanda

India.Arie hasn’t pushed any products has she? Do you think and Alicia Keys and Diddy still use that Proactiv, eh? Haven’t seen any black celebs advertising for that in a minute. justsayin.

The Band’s name is Sade. Her name is Helen Folasada Adu. And yes, I have total respect for her for staying true to music

  • Sickofit

Sad they could only come up with FOUR artists

  • Mszena3

Jill is my friend *in my head* but she advertised for Ashley stewart I.e. the butterfly bra

    • Chanda

MN don’t know nothing about all that.

    • http://www.facebook.com/RosarioRed Rosario Stefania Scarsci

Wow I just remembered that. Arguably, it can be said that she was out for something positive, but that depends on who sees those ads. Jill did work with AS.

  • coppertone

It just depends on what their career needs at that time

You know, I feel like it’s really easy to critique stars, because I feel like if anyone were to offer any of us ten million to sell yogurt, there’d be so many tap dancing, singing, cheesing folks all in front of cameras.  Regular people do commercials pantomiming brushing their teeth, and we’re not judging them.  For most celebrities who peddle products, I respect their hustle; and honestly, I still didn’t think that MJB’s commercial was as bad as people made it out to seem.  But that’s just me.

  • chevonne22

Wow, this list is too short.

Why is adele on here she’s overrated and white? the  white media will never exploit her for a stereotype

    • Jayy Bird

I Do agree I thought this was a black site and Adele should not be on this list

    • Chanda

You must be new because you don’t have to be black for MN to talk about you. I don’t care for Adele personally but MN loves her so… here she is.

So in other word being Black means you can only appreciate, support a Black actor/singer/musician etc.. Whatever…. Not an Adele fan, but she beats most of these ghetto hoodrats so call talents on BET anyday. BTW: Sade is half-White.

    • http://www.facebook.com/RosarioRed Rosario Stefania Scarsci

       I know. I am confused.

  • Am3lya_tandi

I have got mad admiration for Sade. She can go for 10 years without an album and people still remember her, still checking for her and I RAN to the story when Soldier of Love came out. She & her band know what it’s all about THE MUSIC. I don’t know if she’s married, if she has kids, what’s her birthday or her favourite colour and I don’t think she wants us to know that which is perfectly great for me. I just want the music and that’s what she gives. Bless her!

    • activist1

You are right, I agree. I went to her concert right after church LOL. She had one of the biggest selling concerts last year. I do know her marital status (not married but in a long term commuted relationship), kids (one daughter), don’t think I’ve heard what her favorite color is but I’ve read her favorite instrument is the cello. She’ll share bits and pieces here and there but make no mistake when she says her life is private and stay out she actually means it. Love me some Sade!

      • activist1

        *committed*

      • Am3lya_tandi

Ah you’re right I remember watching a special back when Lover’s Rock was about to come out or just came out and she did mention her daughter but you see that’s the whole thing about her. She’s not screaming anything about her personal life on top of the roof for the world to know. She just brings out her music, I love her gracious she is and just amazing! I was kind of disappointed that she let Jay Z ruin her perfectly good song and my favourite song in the album The Moon and the Sky. Anyway, I wish we had more artists like that. I try my hardest not to read about all the gossip ’cause there are somethings I just don’t want to know lol
