Is It Really A Man’s World? 7 Ways Women Have it Better Than The Fellas

May 17th, 2012 - By jaebi

It’s a man’s world. A valid statement, which is precisely what makes it so darn controversial. Fair? Absolutely not, but it’s no secret that many societal structures, traditions and practices are stacked in favor of men over women.

But like the godfather of soul, James Brown sang about a man’s world, he made sure to acknowledge that, “it would be nothing, nothing without a woman or a girl.” So while it may be a “man’s world,” it’s pretty clear when and where women rule.

Here are 7 ways women come out on top:

"Ladies Night"

Ladies Night

Otherwise known as, “show up and get free stuff girls,” ladies night is a nightlife staple men hate to love. Girls get in free, but he has to pay to enter. Then he’ll also pay for a girl’s drink. And although it doesn’t seem fair, he doesn’t complain, because when it’s ladies night he has plenty of options.

*feminist/womanist radar goes off, afro goes straight* O_o Ooookay…this list is offensive to women. Especially “work is optional”. Not in this economy, day, and age. Maybe if you’re born into that good money but not for the rest of us. Especially if you’re alone. You gotta have SOMETHING. I can’t even with this list. I’m going to do something constructive with my time–my daggone homework!

WORST.LIST.EVER. Most of those things are completely outdated and old hat.  Peeing standing up beats ALL of those together, and that’s just ONE.

work is optional – really? what world do you live in?!

    • not a fan!

exactly! not for black women! We been working for generations! 1st wave feminism had almost nothing to do with women of color. I don’t like this list. There are other things that could have been listed but you chose fashion, pregnancy, chivalry (might I add is optional lol). How about we’re the majority in this country, we are the largest buying power, we dominate in certain fields like PR and etc. I’m not rockin with this list. Sorry.

I don’t want to click, but women have lots of power, they just seem to give it away most of the time.

I always talk about how the Family Court or other parts of the judicial system are set up to benefit women. A woman claims she’s been raped and 9/10 she’ll win that case, whether they can prove it true or not.

The fact that women have more freedom in fashion and aren’t looked down as poorly on if they choose to stay home isn’t anything surprising. We live in a patriarchal society; one that values masculinity while femininity is seen as a weakness. Look at how we have men, and unfortunately, women claiming a man to be acting like a “female” to degrade him. I wonder how many women understand why they’re saying by claiming a man to be less than a man by being “female”

I love how you touched on the chivalry thing. I have no problem with it, my boyfriend was raised to never curse in front of women, open doors and all that jazz. I love it. I love a gentlemen. However he’s never treated me as though he’s doing it because he perceives me as weaker or “lesser” some how. It’s just how he was raised. Lol he told me his grandmother told him his ears would fall off if he was mean to girl! I feel that this also kind of touches on how women hoot and holler for equal rights but want to stop short of certain things (Equal rights amendment and the draft anyone?).

I hate the term “reverse sexism” as much as I hate “reverse racism”. There is only sexism and racism, they’re wrong no matter whom they’re directed towards.
