Helen Martin

I know I’m not the only one who has seen Helen Martin in every hood movie there is, but before she got really caught up in ish like Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood and I Got the Hook Up, she was uber-nosey Pearl Bailey on 227. The neighbor who stayed sitting half outside of her window, spreading the gossip around with Mary and the other ladies. After the show ended, she did a lot of movies, including the TV movie, Something to Sing About, Bulworth, and Kiss the Girls, however, Martin passed away in 2000 at the youthful age of 90.

Regina King had a major role in Ray also… Hello? Now I’m starting to question the facts on here… Oh and it was Calvin Dobbs, not Hobbs!

How did you all forget about mentioning Regina King playing her most phemonenal role in the movie “Ray”? She was awesome. I know her career is too numerous to name here, but I just thought I’d throw THAT one in.

  • Nimo

    Was Tisha Campbell on 227??

  • IndaTheBlactor

Helen Martin’s character was Pearl Shay, not “Pearl Bailey.”

These MN writers are ALWAYS messing up the facts. I think they pick them up off of street corners in the morning. They hold up signs “Will write for food”.

LMAO. The best thing I read. Frankly I don’t care where they are now.

  • Shlyfields

Regina King was nominated for a Oscar for the movie Ray …….How could that be left out !!!!!

    • Ladyc

      Okay!!

  • Vee

I loved 227. I wondered what happened to Kia Goodwin it was like all of the sudden she was not on 227 any more.

    Regina King is so pretty.

  • Chanda

Good list but you forgot to add Tokie Smith on here, Robert DeNiro’s ex. Not the most important character I know, but I was just expecting a complete list.

  • Amija James

Marla Gibbs was on Southland and she called Regina King, Brenda.  Priceless!  227 comes on GMC and I make my son watch it with me.  I love the strong black family theme.

    • DXTASY

Now that you mentioned strong black family theme I hope MN does a where are they now with the cast of “Good Times”

      • Chanda

Yeah because I wanna know whatever happened to the girl that played Penny…jk

      • Cami

Yeah I’d like to know whatever happened to the guy who played Thelma’s hubby, Keith.  I don’t recall him appearing in anything else once GT left the air, and that’s been in the neighborhood of 34 years ago!

  • Galenafiel

I always wondered about the actress that played Tiffany. I’m glad to know she’s still working. I still watch 227 on GMC.

  • IllyPhilly

Well there’s no place like home! I think that’s how the song starts.

  • RedButterfly81

I miss watching 227 with my mom back in the day, man I wish I can go back in time when TV sitcoms ruled TV and there was no such thing as trashy overrated TLC, Bravo, Oxygen and Vh1 reality shows.
