Landlord Calls Mo’Nique and Her Husband Broke Weed Smokers in Battle Over Unpaid Rent

Legal battles with landlords never tend to go well, particularly for the tenants, but the fight Mo’Nique, her husband Sidney, and one of their landlord’s, Alice, are involved in is just hitting all below the belt.

Last year, Mo’Nique’s landlord filed a lawsuit against her saying she owed $370,000 in unpaid rent for bailing on the two-year, $20,000/month lease agreement she signed for the Georgia property in March 2011. The couple immediately shot back with a suit of their own, demanding they be let out of their contract because the home smelled of dog feces, wet dog, and urine, plus there was an overflowing septic tank. They also said they had a verbal agreement to be let out of the contract with 60 days notice because of all the problems, and accused the landlord of backtracking. Well now they’re doing a lot more than that.

A new set of documents has been filed in the case, including a string of nasty emails sent between the parties. Sidney said the landlord should be embarrassed by the home she was leasing, and Alice said the couple is just embarrassed that they can’t afford the rent, writing:

“We do understand that your business has been greatly affected by the cancellation of your weekly talk show. However we do not want the publicity and heartache/hardship for either of us.”

That was the last diplomatic approach to the issue because when Sidney said Alice “has a poor man’s mentality,” adding “you talk tough when you are owed but run when you owe,” the landlord said this about the allegations of odor in the home:

“Maybe the illegal substances you use in our home (i.e. WEED) has weakened your sense of smell.”

Don’t think Sidney didn’t have a comeback. He shot down the landlord’s comment immediately with this:

“The only illegal greenery was with the illegal immigrant you brought on our premises to cut down the trees … Maybe the overuse of alcohol has affected you and your husband’s judgment.”

They are out.of.control. According to TMZ, this banter goes on for 136 pages so you can only imagine how much nastier both sides got as time went on. I wonder who’s telling the truth with this one.

    when you’re in a state for a short period of time you don’t buy…you rent.
    didn’t you read “march 2011″ that’s during her BET Show period.
    We all know their home base is LA…come on people…don’t always go for the quick negative.
    This is an old story about the smells…now the landlord is making it more public…we haven’t heard Mo’s take on the situation.  Plus…actors have their business handled by accountants and other personal help. Who is to say she’s not out for money to repair her home for the next actor to “Rent”..after they brought the problems to her attention after using all the things that brought up the smell.  After all the baking cookies…air fresheners etc wore off.  Main thing is…they have issues that’s none of our business.

      The truth here is still unknow. Just because Mo is a celebrity doesn’t mean she can’t battle with the landlord especially behind $20,000 per month. I am sure she has other properties. And for the comment made earlier, if someone lives in an apartment and drives an expensive car, that’s is their buisness. Don’t expect others to live by what you would do or by what you think is the right thing to do. Alot of people chose not to purchase homes for varies reasons especially in today’s times.

    It doesn’t cost much to buy a great home in Ga…maybe she was renting a mansion, but whatever, it doesn’t make good business sense to rent when you can easily own. She should settle this and move on, it’s just making her look tacky. And doesn’t she have kids?

    As much money as both have made they should OWN a home in georgia. I’m
    moving to california and I want to own a home not rent and I don’t have no where
    near that kind of money. Is it just me but her husband looks creepy and freaky.

    Why didn’t see handle her business?  Why is she renting in GA?  I rent here in GA because I don’t have Monique’s money and I don’t want to live here long enough to justify buying a home or rent it out and deal with tenants. No thank you to the rental game.

    Why are they making “verbal” agreements dealing with rent.  When she first noticed the condition of the place she should have started communicating with the landlord by certified letters and then take her to court to get out of the lease.

    Didn’t they know that there were issues with the property before they signed the lease?  They should be owning property not renting.

    I agree Monique has made enough money in her life time to own her own home especially in a state like Georgia where buying a home is cheap.And it does not matter what condition the house is in the fact of the matter is if they owe the money they will end up paying it if you watch enough court shows you will see it always end in favor of the Land-Lord.What this bickering will do is hurt her image and career Hollywood is not interested in people who are involved in law suits especially black folks so the sooner she settle this the better off she will be in terms of her career..

      Monique stays with the ratchet behavior. Some people are just as ignorant as they get. Money doesn’t change them infact they can’t be changed. Its like a person renting an apartment and driving a 2012 mercedes, WHY? The sad part is she has children. Do better Mo

      They were probably not paying the rent themselves anyway……that could have been part of her contract with BET…….who knows……and I am sure they own property some place else.
