Janet Jackson Receives Racist Gift While on Tour

March 20th, 2012 - By Veronica Wells

The more things change the more they stay the same. You would think one’s exposure and confrontation with racism would decrease as you climb the rungs of success but that’s not always the case. Take for example a gift international music icon, Janet Jackson, received while she was on tour.

Source: @JanetJackson

This little doll is Maria. Janet recently tweeted a picture of the doll with the accompanying text:

During the tour, I was given this doll named Maria. She was advertised as lifelike. How does Maria make you feel?

Well. I don’t know how Maria makes you feel but I can tell you that she doesn’t exactly solicit warm fuzzies from me. I find the act of giving a doll like Maria to be more chilling than Maria herself. Clearly, this individual is sick and perhaps a bit dangerous. But Maria also raises a whole lot of questions. Who gave her this doll? How did they get it to Janet Jackson? What message were they trying to send? And perhaps most importantly, when will our country (and others) be done with the racially motivated or racially ignorant shenanigans and attacks?

How does Maria make you feel?

I didn’t see anything offensive about the doll. I think black people make EVERYTHING racist! If there was a note attached with something demeaning or racist then ok, but I didn’t get that looking at the picture

Yet Trayvon Martin’s post couldn’t get more than 4 comments. You guys are sickening, you guys can be outraged over a doll, but not the death of a young innocent man? You are all pathetic and lost on this site. From the authors to the readers,a sick cycle of worthless people. When given real issues to stand up for you guys cowar and disappear, yet for simple acts of stupidity you idiots come in numbers. This site has been lacking personality and depth for a long time, the only thing you guys enjoy reporting on is bs and negativity to generate clicks. I will not waste my time after this day even checking the titles as all the stories reported here are days, even weeks old already. Americans are a sad group of people from the white, indifferent, and black.

      Sit down then calm down!

Just because an article has 4 comments does not mean that people don’t care.

Did you see how many views the article got?
Did you see how many people printed that article or fowarded it to their friends, family and co-workers?
Did you count how many readers decided to talk to their children or little brothers about it?
Do you know how many of us shed tears for that child’s family?
Do you know how many of us chose to pray for Trayvon’s family?

Be disgusted by yourself for comparing that hate crime against a young man with this offensive doll-that is PATHETIC

I don’t see racism here. I think its a bit of a reach and I also think the doll is kinda cute with her matching purse and shoes. *shrugs*

      TO ADD:

I know my history very well not just AA history but history of the diaspora so yes I know what golliwogs were originally intended to do and portray BUT I really don’t think many white people are being intentionally racist anymore. I think a lot of whats going on now is out of ignorance and thinking that racism is gone and not intentional malice. I don’t believe this was given to Ms. Jackson to be hateful or hurtful and therefore I find it cute. Its like a new age golliwog. What if the fan that gave it to her was black? hmmmm….

    • Think Please

**blank stare** People like you still exist?

  • Idcook

    hmph…

Golliwog popularity went out of fashion, literally, in the era of high-button shoes.

It’s highly unlikely that anyone old enough to have any fond memories of them would be able to hear Janet Jackson’s music much less know who she is.
