In the job search the most important goal is to stand out and positively separate yourself from the competition. While you should never underestimate the power of a good, solid cover letter, according to a Forbes article, the benefits of an informational interview far outweigh that of the cover letter.
Forbes sites that the UCLA career center defines an informational interview as “a highly focused information gathering session with a networking contact designed to help you choose or refine your career path by giving you an ‘insider’ point of view.” First of all, anything in person is better. Because a good cover letter is only 300 words, a conversation with someone in your chosen field will give you a far better opportunity to market yourself and your ideas. Informational interviews go beyond one job opportunity. They are relationship builders that help you better understand the industry you work or want to work in and assist you in making memorable impressions on working professionals.
The in person aspect of informational interviews is even better than a networking event filled with a multitude of well connected people. Unlike networking events which can occasionally be overwhelming and a bit in personal, informational are one-on-one. The more informational interviews you are able to secure, the stronger your network becomes. While most people may not have a job to give you, they may know someone that does.
Informational interviews can also provide you with the opportunity to find a mentor. Once you have someone with a track record of excellence and experience to pass on to you as well as strong list of contacts in your corner, the doors will open up much quicker.
When you begin to build these strong connections in your industry, more people will know you are both online and in person at networking events and in the applicant pool. As the Forbes articles says, “when people talk about you, you see results.”
