Teeny Weeny Afros & More: Celebrity Women Who Have Done the Big Chop

March 15, 2012  |

By Angela Thomas

The TWA (teeny weeny afro) has been around for ages and has been worn by neo-soul singers like Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, and India Arie. But now there are a new crop of celebrities who are choosing this style. Whether it is a personal form of expression, a result of damage, or just a new look, more and more celebrity women are deciding to ditch their weaves in favor of their natural hair. Here are six celebrities who boldly chose to chop it all off and/or expose us to their inspiring TWAs.

Viola Davis

The Oscar-nominated actress has donned many looks over her more than 15 years in the business. But her best look by far was when she showed up to the Academy Awards last month rocking a short natural ‘do. The SAG award winner decided to ditch her usual wigs for the natural look saying, “I chose my hair because I wanted to be bold about who I am.”

Solange Knowles

Tired of being compared to her superstar big sister Beyoncé, this hair chameleon lopped of her locks back in 2009 and hasn’t looked back. Since then the singer, actress, and DJ has been spotted all over at events and parties wearing her afro in various lengths. She has also starred in ad campaigns for beauty and skincare line Carol’s Daughter with her growing afro out.

Bre Scullark

You may remember her sporting her long curly mane on the fifth season of America’s Next Top Model, but two years ago Bre chopped it all off in favor of a short curly style. The leggy model sported long hair for most of her life and decided to let go of her trademark locks for a good cause. “The attachment to my long hair held me captive for years,” she told Theybf.com. “When I cut my hair, I took a chance at living a new life by releasing the one thing that I loved and was afraid to let go of.” That’s deep…

Raven Symoné

Most people were shocked when the former Cosby Cutie showed up on the red carpet last year sans her usual long, straight weaves and instead, opted to sport her natural strands. What most people don’t know is that Raven has been rocking natural hair under those wigs for years. The talented actress stopped using relaxers at the age of 14 but had to hide her natural hair under wigs and weaves for TV appearances. Her last BC happened after wearing a bad weave for a show and since then, she has been spotted on several occasions showing off her natural curls.

Willow Smith

Perhaps the most shocking transformation came when little Willow Smith was recently spotted rocking a shaved head. The “Whip My Hair” singer debuted her cropped ‘do last month, first dyeing it blonde, then green. Although this style may be a little grown for an 11-year-old, it certainly matches her quirky and upbeat personality.

Over the years, I have rocked a lot of different hairstyles, short, medium, long, curly wavy and straight.  I move with the trends as most do.  That being said, it has nothing to do with pride in self, culture or needing to know who I am, or any of that other crap being spewed .  I am always well groomed from head to toe.

I don’t understand why the natural styles are ‘in’. As far as I’m concerned, they were never ‘out’. This is the way our hair is-curly, wavy, kinky, and BEAUTIFUL. When my hair grows out, it grows into a ‘fro. AND?

i got a mid size fro, but im about to chop mine off again…bre is so right..when u cut your hair off its like a freedom…its not like you weren’t being yourself with permed hair…or even long hair…its just that even now with natural hair being the seemingly “in” thing to do its still lodged in our brain that its not beautiful to be nappy or bald. kudos to all my nappy headed sisters!!!!!

Willow is rocking her bald head not by choice but because of all the styling and perm. When she was rocking the mohawk, shaved sides you can clearly see the hair on the top was damaged. I understand the start over process, hopefully her hairstylist will be smarter this time around. Willow has some alright curly hair, stop being force ripe and do the cute lil girl styles for a while you have all your life to be bald.

To all the girls who had the hair permed from 4 and been styling their own her since 6 Good for you,do you still have hair and edges now? Probably not.
Maybe because I wasn’t born in the 50-70’s I haven’t seen any girls, especially in school days, rock a cropped baby fro as a hairstyle. The few that ever did was because that’s all the hair they were capable of growing and punishment..never a hairstyle.

I’m sick of everyone saying Willow Smith is ‘too young’ to have her hair chopped off. A cropped fro is a hairstyle black women and girls have been rockin since Adam and Eve. Get over it.
