Rihanna’s Dad Says She Was Getting Fat; Glad She’s Back to ‘Normal Size’

Now I understand why Rihanna was estranged from her father until 2010: The man is nuts.

Heat magazine somehow got in touch with Ronald Fenty, and although you’d think a man who’d only recently reunited with his daughter would tread lightly when speaking about her, he said this:

“I actually thought she was a little fat the last time I saw her. But when I saw her at this year’s Grammys, I thought she was back to her normal size. I used to joke with her, ‘Robyn, you’re getting too fat’. But I think she’s fine.

“I think she looked excellent, as everyone saw, at the Grammys. She’s dieting, she’s working out.”

Um, the only thing I’ve ever seen close to fat around Rihanna was a blunt—on the same vacation where she wore the tiniest string bikinis ever made and didn’t have a dimple, curve, or inch of cellulite in sight. And even if she had managed to gain a few pounds, is that really something you broadcast to a national magazine?

But don’t worry, it gets better. Ronald also gave his two cents (which is about all his comment is worth) on his daughter’s rumored reunion with Chris Brown, saying:

“Chris is a nice guy and everybody’s entitled to make mistakes in their life. God knows how many I’ve made. She’s her own woman now.”

We’re going to consider this interview his latest. No wonder that girl has issues.

What do you think about what Rihanna’s dad said? Is he clearly part of the reason she’s such a wild child?

With a father like him, it’s no wonder she’s such a mess!!!

  • RakeTakeTuesday21

4 sure that her dad Have told her that in personal other then that he could have kept his mouth shut.

  • Pivyque

No. She isn’t a “wild child”. She is a GROWN WOMAN. When she first came out, she was little miss sunshine and her music was appropriate for her age.

Trust me, Rihanna does not represent all Bajans, smh.  That being said, I can definitely see where she gets her issues from.  Her father probably said things like that to her all the time when she was growing up.

    You can’t argue with crazy.

Cultural conflicts notwithstanding, just-recently-estranged parents should probably be more mindful of what they are saying to and about their child in a public forum. Any way you slice it, it’s in poor taste.  The relationship was already fractured and newly on the mend.  How did this seem like a good time to discuss how fat you thought she was getting?  Was there nothing else to talk about? The weather?  Sad.

The media is making this a storm out of a tea-cup.

Plenty of African parents & Afro-Caribbean parents will be the first to check you if you are gaining weight – it’s not a big deal.

    She looks great either way.

Body image begins at home.  He said that in a very flippant way that could easily be taken with a grain of salt.  Conversely, the ease in which he said it, is an indicator that he might say things like that ALOT.  Either way Rihanna is GORGE.

Lets acknowledge that they come from a different culture…my west indian friends’ mama’s are REAL QUICK to say you’re getting fat lol.  Its not to destroy self esteem, its just an observation.  They don’t speak the way Americans do, so lets not go all crazy applying our culture to what was said. And I’d rather the man speak on forgiving then pretend his wife- beating crack- using self was better than CB, but maybe thats just me.

I don’t think his comments were out of pocket, but I mean, that wasn’t very nice. Rihanna is absolutely gorgeous at any size. At the same time, there were times when she’s been thick but…it looked good on her. I wouldn’t necessarily call her fat. Not at all. Sometimes our parents say things that are just…wow. But yeah…calling her fat is not okay.

Um, the only thing I’ve ever seen close to fat around Rihanna was a blunt…………………DEAD

Bajan men are the meanest looking men.  A smile doesn’t even change that evil look. And he is the 4th Bajan I know of with a crooked eye.  Whats up with that?

  • yardgyal

She needs to tell him to keep his mouth shut…if you dont have anything good to say, say nothing at all! ugh. Damn caribbean people i tell you, sometimes my people get on my nerves!

    • tastythoughts

right…must we say EVERYTHING we thinking…ugh…

My folks are from the Caribbean too and from what I’ve seen (and experienced first hand -__-) Caribbean parents have nothing against telling anyone they look fat (I guess it isn’t as insulting or as a big deal as it is in America). So, consider the cultural difference.

    • KiTsy

Yes!!! Caribbean people are the worst when it comes to pointing out any weight gain. I’ve battled the bulge most of my life and I get panic attacks any time I am going to see my family and family friends because my weight [gain or loss] is the first thing they comment on. sometimes, after the fact, I wish I had cursed them the hell out, but you know we’re not raised that way.

    smh….crack is truly wack.

    Yep, explains a lot.
