Regina King to Play Shirley Chisholm in Biopic of First Black Presidential Candidate?

March 6, 2012  |

A few years back Regina King mentioned that she would love to portray the first Black New York Congresswoman and Presidential Candidate Shirley Chisholm in a film and it looks like the actress may have finally gotten her chance.

While Regina hasn’t said anything about the role for some time, Kerry Washington recently let the news slip in an interview with Kam Williams for While answering questions about her upcoming movie roles, she casually said,

“And I just heard that Regina King is doing Shirley Chisholm, perfect casting, which is another story that has to be told.”

According to Shadow and Act, a film titled “Chisolm” is listed on IMDB under Creative Monster Productions with a 2012 release date. The film is said to be in pre-production, but no details about Regina or any other members of the cast have been listed.

Hopefully Kerry Washington has the inside scoop and this biopic is definitely happening. She’s right that this is a story that needs to be told.

What do you think about Regina King taking on this role? Is she the perfect pick like Kerry says?

This is great!!! … This is a story that should be told and long overdue.  Shirley Chisholm was definitely qualified, smart and a well spoken women who could have been President of the United States.  Regina is a great actress and I look forward to her receiving an Academy Award for this performance. “Good Luck Regina”

  • I would love to see this story. Unbought and Unbossed Chisholm ’72 was a great documentary. Regina King is one of the best actresses and I know she can pull it off. I am already there.

  • Regina is so pretty – nice to hear about some new black film projects that don’t involve men dressing up as women.

I like Regina King, but, I think that Anika Noni Rose should play this part, she too is an awesome actress.

That’s a good observation- but she’s such a great singer I’d expect her to break out in song and dance.

Whoever plays her, I’m glad her story is being told.

While I have no opinion about Regina King for the role, I’m glad that Shirley Chisholm is being remembered.  She was a firecracker at a tumultuous time of change in our recent history.  She deserves to be the subject of a film.
