Record Replay: Artists We Want to Hear From Again

Style Weekly

My music loving heart just can’t and won’t let some artists go.  A few times a week, I’m on the hunt for new artists to fall in love with (musically speaking, of course) but in the meantime, my mp3 player always goes back to people I love.

These are a few artists who we haven’t had an album from in quite some time – some you know and some you may have forgotten about – and hopefully, they’ll grace us again.

If Jagged Edge came out with an album in the same vein as “JE Heartbreak,” it would be much appreciated.

Thank you for recognizing these article. Amel Larrieux (solo albums & work with Groove Theory & Sweetback, Sade’s band), Kelis (esp. her work with Pharrell, Raphael Saddiq, & No Doubt), Donnie (his debut The Colored Section was Grammy worthy), & Tweet (eclectic exceptional album Southern Hummingbird) are some of the most outstanding artists in the industry.  We always wonder why certain artists sells millions of albums like Rihanna & some artists remain underground. All of these artists deserve to be at the top of the charts & deserve Grammys. Also, I would love to hear new music from the originial Brownstone (MiMi, Nicci, Maxee), Zhane, Lauryn Hill, Jamiroquai, Changing Faces, Tamia, Dionne Farris, Groove Theory, Lisa Stansfield, Chico Debarge, Digable Planets, Billy Lawrence, Esthero, & After 7.

Meant to say, “Thank you for recognizing these artists.” Excuse me.  I wrote the earlier comments at 4am in the morning. I love the fact that I’m not the only one who still loves the music of Amel Larrieux, Kelis, Tweet, & Donnie.

  • FromUR2UB

I listened to the Cloud 9 song by Donnie.  I’d never heard of him, but sometimes his voice reminded me of Donnie Hathaway’s.

  • CHEF

    Jaguar Wright

i LOVE Martin Luther. Like, love, love, love. And his cover of While my Guitar Gently Weeps was amazing.

I miss Floetry but I love Marsha solo…and I co-sign the Eve sentiment!

  • Fannietmk

I miss musiq he is so good. And so real.

  • Liish

I cannot ride with either of the ladies from Floetry solo. Marsha released a free.99 mixtape that sh*tted on her album (that I paid for) and that isn’t even saying much. She got too much voice to make the kind of lackluster stuff I found on that album (her singles were pretty dope tho). Natalie just doesn’t appeal to me solo, her album was listenable on the strength of her features, which just made it a weak listen for me. (If I’m listening to a song to get to Musiq’s verse Imma just go play him album.)

Tweet had an album shelved in 2010 I believe. Love, Tweet? A couple of those tracks leaked… they weren’t that memorable. Girl can sang, so i look forward to her blowing my mind with something great in the future.

I looooooooves me some Van Hunt. That man is excellent live. What were you hoping for? was def. a change in sound for him. It isn’t my favorite thing, but I’m so glad to see him still making music I can’t help but celebrate it.

I remember when Martin Luther was like a permanent guest with The Roots. His vocals are so silky… Last time I really saw him was in the movie Across the Universe (where he sang the heck outta While My Guitar Gently Weeps).

I ride with Kelis even if I don’t care for the song becasue she is true to her eclectic sound every album. I hate Techo for the most part, but I ain’t mad at her. she has always played around with different musical styles.

Imma add Maxwell just becasue that man is always promising an album and NEVER delivering on time. he will be well worth the wait I believe.

Lmao you can always hear from everyone on this list, it’s called underground. These people are still making music with Amel just having a new single out. This article should read “Artist we wish would become mainstream”.

    • DrennaB

I don’t think it’s at all about them becoming mainstream. I don’t really care about that – I just want new music. If you can find me a new single from Donnie, I might be forever indebted to you. lol!  But seriously…Amel has a new single out?  I tend to follow her as do many people I know and none of us seemed to have known that. Can you PLEASE tell me the name of it (if you happen to know it) b/c as soon as I read your comment I went searching for it. Please, please pleaaaaaase?? :-)

  • Ay

Never heard of Donnie or Martin Luther.

Eve used rap as a means to an end, same with Nicki Minaj. If they didn’t have to rap for their supper they wouldn’t have.

I SO agree on Floetry. Together they are a team, apart they are not the same.

Last time I seen Amel she was looking OLD AS HELL.

I don’t want to hear from anybody in particular I just want my favs to STEP IT UP.

  • Blue4haiku

I.WEAR.DONNIE.OUT! You’re def on point with all mentioned here. I need to hear from Jaguar Wright & Calvin Richardson, please & thank you!

  • Febjul2629

i would like to hear from tweet and amel but who i would really like to hear from the most is dru hill,702,tamia,mya,and jagged edge

    • Pretty weirdo

It angers my soul tamia is so underrated I love that woman.

    • Freebee33

Mya has a mixtape out called K.I.S.S, and Tamia just dropped a new single called Beautiful Surprise…

  • With Love From Tyla

Serious co-sign…especially with Tweet and Floetry. I like Marsha, but the vibe wasn’t on point like it would’ve been had she stayed with her partner. Its a shame the true talent that doesn’t get as much shine time as these other clowns. I adore Van Hunt, and Donnie and Martin Luther, I have to check out.
