Is Wiz The Exception or The Rule?

I’m not a man but I often get a lot of insight from two close BFFs who happen to be men.

Growing up in a house full of women, I grew up processing and analyzing the trials and tribulations of relationships from one very narrow perspective. As I got older and started interrogating men about their thoughts and views on things, I came to understand a few things like…your number does matter, no man wants to wife up a slore, and you gotta stroke a man’s ego.

In any case, I thought I understood things but news like Wiz Khalifa proposing to Amber Rose got a girl like me confused. Not to mention, I’m still trying to wrap my brain around the fact that Reggie Bush took Kim K, a woman who built her fame off a sex tape, seriously. But back to this Khalifa thing – I assumed that other men would look down on him considering that Rose publicly came up as Kanye’s arm candy and exploited her body in all its nakedness to promote her fame and popularity.

On SingleBlackMale, Dr. J contends that Wiz “won” on account that he did get the woman of a more famous rapper. Interesting. Confusing.

Does this mean that men are becoming more open minded to a woman’s past? I mean, I’m all for it but I find that in my circles, I don’t find that level of open-mindedness and I wonder whether the actions of the Reggie Bushs of the world steer women in the wrong way, who will get punished later by more stern suitors. But hey, in any case, it shows that men are evolving to hold themselves to the same standards that they subject women to.

What have you observed? Do you find that friends with questionable pasts are unharmed by it when it comes to their dating potential?

    I was never a wild girl. I am 30 and only had 3 boyfriends. Each one of my ex’s were THAT dude. They each told me when we were dating that I was who they wanted to marry but, they ALL cheated with HO#S. One en fell in love with her and married her. IDK what the world has come to. I remember a time when men knew the difference between a wife and “late night hype”. Not ANYMORE! They make songs now that say, “I’ll make it rain on them HO#S.” That means, I will give my money to a NOTHING that bounces in me and my homies faces and sleeps with all of us. It is a trip, real talk. And as a black woman, we most def have the odds against us. But, that’s aight… I feel like Wiz coulda done a whole lot better cuz his heart seems to be in the right place. then again, who knows what kind of dude he was before he stepped on the scene- how many women’s hearts had been broken or how many women he laid down with??? And Amber’s parents are white. There are pictures of them on her twitter.

    Is this for real? That guy is repulsive looking! She’s marrying down in the looks department for sure. They both probably have scandalous pasts. Who cares why this guy is getting married, it will only last 6 months anyway.

    people to need to get over the amber thing. i mean really.. if women REALLY knew about a mans past, especially a man who is attractive and has all his stuff together when it came to how many women he has been with.  if a man tells you he has been with 15 women and he is 35…..multiply that number by 2-3.  Go to the dr, get them papers and move on.  the past is the past.

    If someone really loves you, they’ll look past all the things you’ve done anyway. Most of the people who judge have very big skeletons in their closets that jump out sooner or later.

    I think you are missing the point, people.  The author was merely asking questions.  I don’t think she is “judging” Amber.  As young girls we were brought up to believe that no man wants a girl who has been around the block.  I know my mom taught me the same thing!  The author is opening up a dialogue — and the question is “have men changed their ideas about what a ‘lady’ is?”  I think it’s a valid question.  These two particular women, Amber and most certainly Kim, do not fit the picture of what our mommas told us would be the “kind of girl you bring home to momma.” So the burning question remains —- does your past matter?  Apparently not to Wiz and Reggie!  I don’t know about men in the “real” world — but it seems in the celebrity world things are different.
