All They Need Is One Mic: Stars Who Should Host The Oscars

Tonight the stars step out on the ruby red carpet for the Academy Awards aka The Oscars.  While we surely look forward to seeing who wins, the other exciting part is being entertained by the awards show host. This year Billy Crystal is the host of the show. Billy replaced Eddie Murphy after he stepped down a few months ago and I think he is a formidable choice. But if we had a say in the selection of the host, here are a few people we’d  like to see  one day…

"HostKevinHart"

Kevin Hart

I know he’s a bit racy for this type of “button up” show but hey, they were going to let Eddie Murphy host right? Kevin has hit his stride in terms of his career and it would be nice if he could hit the mainstream so that everyone can see how funny he is (well, I think he’s funny). Plus, comedians are known for hitting a wall, so to speak, in terms of their careers so Kevin should get all the accolades now.

"HostWandaSykes"

Wanda Sykes

I have to be honest: Wanda really isn’t that funny to me but most people seem to really like her so she should have a shot. She travels in many different industry circles so everyone is familiar with her. Wanda would toe the line just enough for people to get a bit uncomfortable because they’re unsure of what she’ll say next but comfortable enough to know that they shouldn’t take anything she says personally.

"HostOprah"

Oprah

I mean, why not? We already know she serves as a great host based on her own television history.  She also started doing a post-Oscars special the day after that was very popular.  She’s LOVED by Hollywood and I think she might be able to drop a couple of funny lines.

"HostStephenColbert"

Stephen Colbert

Stephen sometimes has a really dry sense of humor that not every “gets” (or maybe they just don’t think he’s funny) but that sometimes works on award shows of this magnitude.  But I do think that whoever votes on hosting also must consider that he can be political and I’m sure they only want to keep it “light.”

"HostQueenLatifah"

Queen Latifah

Hands down, one of my FAVORITE hosts over the last few years! Now, it seems like Latifah may have some sort of deal with the People’s Choice Awards but I’m sure she’d find a way out if the opportunity presented itself. She’s funny, pretty and downright likeable! They could also get cheesy to lighten up the moment and add a little singing/dancing portion that she could do. Yeah, I see it!

"HostTinaFey"

Tina Fey

I think it is pretty safe to say that for the most part, Tina is the “Belle of the Ball” when it comes to winning Daytime Emmy Awards.  Hollywood loves her, her colleagues seem to love her, her peers, etc…seems like a no- brainer. I wonder if we’ll see her as host within the next couple of years.

"HostEddieMurphy"

Eddie Murphy

Now I know Eddie stepped down as this year’s host because his friend Brett Ratner was removed but he needs to be the host.  The biggest concern now is that THIS YEAR would have been the best year for it.  I also worry that now the board of voters will completely overlook him in the future. He may have messed up his best chance.

All of your choices are bad ones. To SUCCESSFULLY host the Oscars, the individual must have just the right balance of humor, self-effacing delivery, ego yes (but not an overpowering one) and a connection with a HOLLYWOOD audience (it’s totally different than a New York audience connection:  see David Letterman – ugh!)   That’s what makes Billy Crystal a great and memorable Oscar host..same with Johnny Carson. who also did it with class, style and humor.  NONE of those you mentioned could pull it off successfully.

I love me some Wanda Sykes! yes I do! and I think she would do a great job as would Steve Colbert and Tina Fey. The rest can go where the sun don’t shine.

I want Chris Rock to do it again.

Kevin Hart host the Oscars??!! Get serious, how many short jokes can a person come up with.

Wanda Sykes isn’t funny and would have the audience asleep within the first hour.

Eddie Murphy could do it, but he seems to be too much of a diva.

  • I do not find many of the popular comics listed funny…

    Wanda Sykes is not funny.
Loud and obnoxious is more like it.
