I Know You Mean Well, But…7 Reasons Why BET Kills Me Softly

February 16th, 2012 - By IndigoBlack

When you make the conscious decision to name yourself Black Entertainment Television, you’ve got to know that you’re setting yourself up for a whole lot of love, hate, criticisms and critiques, so I know it can’t be easy for the good folks at BET to do what they do. Oh trust me, I get it. While they’re a successful company and have many bright spots (adore BET Honors, Sunday Best is in its own lane, and 106 & Park is cute), the truth is, the programming is the major issue with BET.

Yesterday it was revealed that they would be creating a new show called Single Black Female about a TV host…who…is single I guess? I mean really, what will make people want to watch? As a friend said, the ideas BET comes up with are actually really good, but the execution is nothing near good.  The channel has mad potential, so we hope Single Black Female is good, but most importantly, we hope it isn’t all over the place like these shows…

The Game

I have to be honest. The Game on BET is really not working for me. Try as hard as you want (I tried to keep up my enthusiasm during the first season with the network, but it waned), but after a while, you just realize that “thangs done changed” big time. When the show was on The CW, I felt like it was less soap opera-ish, and I honestly didn’t mind it at 30 minutes with the laugh track. They kept it simple but funny. But now that it has moved, I’m not sure I’m feeling the directions of the stories, the fast forward into the future, or the complete 360 the characters did. The Tasha Mack character is just getting too annoying and I love Brandy, but girl, you need to do a Moesha II or Moesha: All Grown Up because her chemistry with Jason’s character is…meh. I’ve been a fan of Mara Brock Akil’s since Girlfriends, but the writing on this show nowadays (not always) needs to do a throwback to the past. I just don’t understand why it had to change so much for BET.

Hellooooo… BET is no longer Black Entertainment…. Its entertainment for blacks given by whites!! Yall know them white folk dont understand us. I dont care how much they put us under a microscope, study us, date us, infiltrate…. they cant get it. TV One!!!! is whats happenin’… atleast u can get some old black sitcoms and it just feels black lls

I actually only watch one of the shows listed – The Game – and I agree wholeheartedly. I thought it was just me!! The show is way over the top and this over-the-top-ness started when the show moved to BET.  Too many cameos by Black stars.  It’s like stop trying to squeeze every Black actor/actress into the storyline! It was fine the way it was. I actually liked the fact that at its inception, the actors who play Derwin Davis, Malik Wright and Kelly Pitts were fairly unknown. It was good to see some fresh faces. I also agree regarding the non-existent chemistry between Brandy and Jason Pitts. Fail.

I thought it was me. Very disappointed with The Game, now. The move to BET has rendered this once
“must see tv” show virtually unwatchable. #bringbackkelly

  • Team nymphis

I don’t watch television but I saw the game a few times here or there.and when I heard it was going to be on BET I knew they were goin to ghettofy it.and as soon as a saw Malik’s mother smiling a black and mild I turned it off and have never seen another second of it.

    • Team nymphis

      Smoking a black and mild
      Sorry

      • Shirl

Team nymphis get out of my head!! I was just going to post a comment about the same thing. I saw Tasha smoking a black and mild and that did it for me!!

  • Sherrita

Correction: BET is not owned by black ppl! They r owned by VIACOM, the same co ran by MTV & VH1!

  • DESIREE_HADLEY

I HATE THE GAME NOW! IT SUCKS!!

  • terrainohio

No it’s not black owned; but those that are black and in
charge have no problem with coming down the red carpet at a premier and claim
the face of BET… then they can claim the blame.

CW was not run by a room full of black people when the game
was good. Did you really think that the Tasha character was going to evolve
    into some intellectual queen?

Overall BET reminds me of a very well ran College TV Station.
They really need to use their money more
wisely and stop with the low budget; “High Profile” productions i.e. rip the
runway, the lame BET awards with the horrible “standing outside a club” look of
the red carpet etc. Do it correct or don’t do it.

Ummm….Aside from the awful church bit, the last few episodes of ‘The Game’ have actually been humorous as well as having interesting stroylines; it’s making a comeback. Tasha and Mel’s characters still needs work though.  The rest of the programming on BET is actaully not bad, boring and unwitty, but not derogatory.  Yes, their past programming says differently, but, presently the network actually doesn’t have shows, outside of the BET Awards, that showcase uncouth behavior which warrants such disdain from within the community.  Yes the network can always do better and ‘ComicView’ should be back.

      Agreed!

I enjoyed Uncut Videos! Dont judge me! LOL! BET is garbage and has been for a longtime now. My guess within the next few years the network will be cancelled.

  • Sue

I think BET’s only issue is trying to hard to impress everyone or trying to hard not to be judged. I can feel them not playing certain videos, but sometimes BET just comes across as…uptight, like they’re trying to hard to impress us or to be seen as higher class when some of the programming they’ve had on their channel was not classless at all…Idk…

  • Msmykimoto2u

But to me the worst show on BET was that game show Toccara hosted Take The Cake and I will never forget that Tip Drill video by Nelly :S

  • Msmykimoto2u

Bring back Comiv View, Cita’s World (funny 3d animated girl who hosted her own show) Hits from the Street, Spring Bling, and give us a Girlfriends reunion!

    • LaLaLaMeansILoveYou

yes! Add to that Video Soul and Midnight Soul. Memories :)

      • Msmykimoto2u

Oh man, yes! I loved me some Midnight Soul!

        • Msmykimoto2u

Especially the year when Fortunate by Maxwell always came on tv^_^

I think it’s good to see black actors, producers, directors etc. doing their work, but what KILLS me is when a good story line ALWAYS has to have some freaking religious undertone. I am getting so tired of seeing a potentially good movie with a great cast of black actors only to realize that it’s all about “the church.” Sigh…anyway, BET is a screwed up “Network”. I definitely don’t watch the garbage on that channel.

  • Netdandri

You put into words what a lot of people have been feeling for years. I want to support good black programming, but BET needs to step it up. I love how they are trying to keep black scripted shows alive, but something is missing with the writing. And The Game probably should have stayed a simple comedy with dramatic elements.

  • Jazzsingerar

and it was ex-produced by Kelsey Grammer - it made me like him even more. I still watch reruns of Fraser and its hard to believe his stick in the butt character was producing a Black show and doing it well !!! bring back the FUNNY…..
