If you don’t have a Valentine and aren’t perusing the streets with your girls celebrating love in general, you should still observe this day of “amore” by watching some films about all things love-based. But we’re not talking the normal cheesy rom-com, but instead, movies that show the ups and downs of real love. Save the fairy tales for Disney and the kids and check out our favorites (and recommend your own below)!

I will give you Love Jones for being realistic simply becasue they had some real issues. You understood that these were not perfect people by any means. It was relate-able while still giving that warm, ish works out feeling.

Medicine for Melancholy is my joint. Barry Jenkins became a permanent dude to check for for his creation of this film. (go check out his bloomingdale commercial, even it is amazing) It is definitely realistic. Its the kind of movie where you invest in the characters and say okay, this can’t be the end when the credits roll.

The rest of these movies No Grounds in reality. (I can’t speak on Blue Valentine b/c I haven’t seen it.)

I absolutely love Blue Valentine. Such a realistic portrayal!

SO DO I!  As realistic as the movie is I have to say that Michelle Williams character made me mad.  She was so hard on Ryan Gosling

Why is Love & Basketball not on this list?? One of the best movies about love!

  • Common Sense is NOT Common

The Notebook and Love Jones are not realistic love movies….smh

For shame! (kidding) Outside of the poetry aspect, I think it’s very realistic. I think we play games and wait for folks to make moves and put labels on things so much when we’re not sure if we’re ready for a relationship that all that game playing can ruin a good thing. That almost happened in Darius and Nina’s case…But alas…that’s just me.
