Sherri Shepherd Speaks as a ‘Girl Who Had a Lot of Abortions’ in ‘View’ Debate

February 9th, 2012 - By Brande Victorian

Sherri Shepherd has been open about her promiscuous past, telling the audience at “The View” she had more abortions than she would like to count back in 2008. But emotions were on the rise yesterday as the ladies discussed the controversial Texas law that requires women to have a sonogram before having an abortion, and Sherri got a little choked up this time.

While Elisabeth Hasselbeck expressed favor for the law, saying, “You would never go through any medical procedure like that…without looking at the scientific evidence, why you would ask for an X-ray for those things but not in this case?” Barbara Walters and Joy Behar called the law “totalitarian” and “heartbreaking.”

Sherri Shepherd seemed to be the only one speaking from the perspective of the women who would actually have to endure a sonogram before an abortion and she was noticeably upset at the requirement, saying it’s ridiculous to not want women to have abortions but also not want them to go to Planned Parenthood and get birth control and then give people the safety net of Welfare and food stamps to only come back and say the recipients keep having babies and don’t want to take care of them.

“We stop at the picket signs and we don’t help you past that!” she said. “I’m speaking as a girl who had a lot of abortions and I swear to God, if they had shown me a picture of the fetus I probably wouldn’t have but I would have put my child in a lot of situations that wouldn’t have been good because I didn’t have the mental capacity to deal with having a child…it was a hard thing.”

Check out the clip from the segment here.

Do you think Sherri’s right about the catch 22 of women being discouraged from using preventive resources and then being criticized for getting pregnant? What about the idea of being guilted into having a child you can’t take care of with this law?

To have a multitude of abortions is difficult to comprehend. How many abortions does it take before people realize how a person becomes pregnant? It is a very sad situation. Maybe education can help.

Keep your legs closed and then you can’t be “beguiled” into having a child…

Ladies, we are being distracted from the main issue, which is CHOICE. Hasselbeck doesn’t understand the meaning of the word, CHOICE, because she has been under catholic authoritarian rule, the heirarchy in her church make decisions for her (as we’ve seen). WE are PRO-CHOICE. There is no one on this earth that can take that Free Will that we supposedly are endowed with by GOD at birth. That’s what churches preach, Free Will from your Creator. Then they turn around and tell you what your Free Will must do? See the hypocrisy, the lie? The church will say whatever suits their purpose at the moment. Prez Obama wants for you to make your own decision in your personal life. Prez Obama also wants for you what you want for yourself: health care, food, shelter, education.

With Prez Obama, WE will have health care and a chance for better life. WE will have CHOICE, not led by the nose by any repub/tparty. OBAMA 2012 and a strong Democratic Congress. DEMOCRATIC the whole way.

I was an abuse victim. The man that I thought loved me, harmed me. When I realized I was pregnant with that same mans child, I could bare the thought of knowing what might happen to me or him/her if I had a child in that environment.
Like Sherri said: having seen the child in a sonogram might have changed my mind, but the environment of where that child may have been placed… it was not the place nor the time. When I am ready to have a child, with a stable home and finances (and mentally) , I will plan it out… but that’s a decision I will make for myself. For anyone in TX to think that they know better then I, or anyone else that comes in for an abortion, what is necessary for me and my future child, they are sorely mistaken.

She needs to keep her mouth shut about private things. Nobody needs to know all that.

What I hate about these discussions is that people act like everything is all black or white.  I’m pro-choice, even though an abortion is not something I would ever choose for myself, because there are other factors and circumstances the other side refuse to consider.   And please correct me if you feel differently.  5 years ago I would have been against abortions completely but something happened that made me change my stance.  A little girl who attended the after school program I volunteered at, 12 years old was molested by her father and she became pregnant.  (How this happened when she was living with her grandparents I don’t know.)  Her grandparents were hardcore Catholics and decided for her that she would keep the baby and they would raise it for her, a hard decision being that they were already pretty old.  Even though the girl was able to conceive her body was not yet able to handle the pregnancy.  Complications arose early on.   Two months into the pregnancy the baby was killing her.  The doctor actually suggested the pregnancy be terminated.  The grandparents refused, and of course the child’s consent wasn’t needed.  Both the little girl and the baby ended up dying.  The girl   due to all of the complications and the baby simply because it was too underdeveloped to live on its own.  The grandparents made a choice that ended both of their grandchildren’s lives and the little girl had no say in whether or not she was ready to give up a life she hadn’t had a chance to live for her unborn child.  It was the hardest moment of my life.  I still remember her asking me why she was paying for her relatives choices.  I had no answers and neither did my mother when I went home to ask her the same question. It’s because of her that I decided to remain celibate until marriage.  I had to ask myself, if I became pregnant and had complications would I be strong enough to choose my child’s life over my own?  It’s a question I still don’t know the answer to.  So here I am, a 22 year old college senior who is still a virgin.  I personally feel that it was murder to allow the unborn child to kill their grandchild.  Where was her advocate?

I am a single mother, pregnant at the age of 16.  I had a choice of abortion.  Even walked into the clinic and laid on the table but my heart couldn’t take it.  I now have a 23 year old son who is graduating college this fall.  He is a blessed child.  It was never easy but when you are pregnant you have to grow up and realize it is not about you anymore.

      Yes. I agree whole-heartedly.

I love Sherri.  But she said, “as a person who had a lot of abortions.”  This is exactly why Texas is requiring women view the sonogram first.  Unfortunately there are more women out there like Sherri who are overly promiscuous and they’re not learning their lesson after the first time they get knocked up.  Abortions were never supposed to be used as a form of birth control.  Theres the argument is it truly a baby early on?  Well if you see the sonogram and hear the heartbeat that argument is over.  There are a lot of women out there who want kids and can’t have them, adoption is always an excellent option.  Unfortunately black children are the last to get adopted.  It’s a hard situation all the way around.

If it’s only a cells, not yet a fetus, not a “human Being” …what’s the big deal?  Why are women objecting?

      • NikkitaMichelle

Because they know it’s not just cells and they don’t want that to be confirmed with visual proof.
