
Although O, The Oprah Magazine created magazine history when it debuted in 2000 and sold successfully from the gate, sales of the popular magazine has suffered as of late. In the second half of last year, sales declined by 32 percent according to figures released by the Audit Bureau of Circulations. The average decline experienced by other magazines was only about 10 percent. Oddly enough, O is one of only four magazines which experienced declines in the same period.
It goes to show that Oprah Winfrey’s show was inherently tied to the success of the magazine. Along with her magazine, Oprah’s new network OWN has publicly struggled to gain a footing in the cable television landscape. After firing original CEO Christina Norman last Spring after a disappointing debut and dismal ratings, Oprah took over the helms but has yet to prove that she has what it takes to turn the network’s fate around. Just recently, the Rosie O’Donnell show laid off 30 staff member and “scaled back” programming due to low ratings.
