Hair Raising: Iconic Women Who Changed the Standard for Black Hair

February 7th, 2012 - By MN Editor

Pam Grier

Pam’s afro was everything! A perfect circle (and sistas with fros know how hard that can be to achieve) with fun, tight curls, the actress’ hair had just as much character as Ms. Grier did. Sure, there were many women with much bigger fros (Marsha Hunt, Angela Davis, etc.), but with the exposure Grier was getting thanks to her roles in films like Foxy Brown and Coffy back in the ’70s, she became something of a spokesmodel for the natural style. I can dig it!

Missing Lauryn Hill. I grew locks because of Lauryn’s example.

    • Michelle

I think is great and appealing ,i loved locks from then on,but i want to inform you there weren’t natural, and to me it doenst matter, but she never did it for political reasons, only to reinforce who she is.(choice)

How could Halle make this list and not Anita Baker or Toni Braxton??? Ms. Baker and Ms. Braxton rocked tight, short ‘dos before Halle did.

I am so glad that you squeezed brandy in almost was about to protest because that what i remember trying to copy. However i could also add Aaliyah in this because she made me want to embrace my natural looking relaxed hair rather than today where we are simply trying to catch up with the latest craze in the hair game. Despite her werid behaviour i think L boogie deserves to be here for embracing her locks

However on that note i guess Tyra or Beyonce should be here for the lace fronts….lol

this whole list is SPOT on! one person I think I would add to the list: Janet Jackson. She had some good hair versatility

    • Sue

Back in the day i ha to have braids like Brandy. I box braids, cornrows, it was on. It’s been awhile since i did that. I think i’ll get it done for a throwback style.
