Anthony Mackie’s view of “The Help”

January 30th, 2012 - By MN Editor

Anthony Mackie, star of the upcoming film, “Man on a Ledge,” shared his opinions about the insanely popular and controversial movie “The Help.” While the film has received critical acclaim and is receiving plenty of Oscar buzz, there are plenty of people, many of them in the black community, who took issue with the movie. Among other things this is what Mackie had to say about the film.

As an African American actor in this day in age, it is our job to portray every time in history.

You can listen to the rest of Anthony’s statement and why it works for him at EurWeb.com.

Sorry, I totally disagree with him.  There is NO REASON for black actors to still be playing domestic help roles in 2012.  Black actors have the money and power to create our own roles nowadays.  and there are PLENTY of other diverse roles that black actors & actresses have done over the years; the problem is that The Academy ignores those movies.  they only pay attention to black actors when they play stereotypical roles.  For the first time in history, we’re in a position in Hollywood where we don’t have to play those roles anymore.  We have to initiate the change.  Black actors & actresses need to stop accepting those roles, point blank, and start creating our own more diverse roles.  if Black actors would start using the power that they have in Hollywood, then our future black actresses won’t feel like they have to play a maid in order to get noticed.

      I agree with you 100%.

face it: hollywood is full of bigots. u either get down or lay down. red tails was turned down by major studios. I will not spend another dime on the hollywood machine.

I would agree with his statement if African American actors and actresses were given awards and praise for roles in time periods when they weren’t in servitude….or playing any other stereotypes like gang bangers or abusive moms living in the hood with a young daughter with kids.  If black actors in Hollywood had access to all the different types of roles their white counter-parts do, these stereotypical types of roles would be few and far between and there wouldn’t be any backlash

Co-sign………There is no balance meaning diversity of roles for black actors in movies….Its just the same old characters prostitutes, gang bangers and down and out roles….Just like there is diversity of roles for white actors the same can be done for blacks.
