Black Women Want to Go Nude Too, Campaign Says

Tara Raines makes me realize I had every right to be as excited as I was when I found a nude bra to perfectly match my skin last year and why I’m allowed to be as pissed as I am that one of the fasteners is now gone: I may never find another one like it!

The 31-year-old LA psychologist has launched a new campaign lashing out at the lack of nude bra options for women of color. According to The Huffington Post, When Tara found out  her mother and other family members and friends were dying their bras brown to match their skin color, she launched “What’s Your Nude?” to get retailers to pay attention to this need.

“Women of color have tremendous spending power in the U.S. and it’s absurd to think that in 2012 we are essentially disenfranchised when we shop for lingerie. It’s my hope that this campaign will drive not only awareness, but swift action by bra makers,”Raines told Women’s Wear Daily.

“I don’t think it’s too much to ask that bra makers include darker hues when manufacturing their collections. Women of color deserve to look and feel Hot, and a big part of that is looking like ourselves.”

In honor of Black History month, Tara is asking women to click the “like” tab at Facebook.com/morebrownbras on February 1 , and contact their favorite bra manufacturer or retailer by mail, phone, e-mail or social media using the Twitter handle #whatsyournude)

WWD says more then 260 women have signed up, including a few celebs like Holly Robinson Peete and Chrisette Michele who tweeted her support after Tara reached out to her:

“@WhatsYourNude lol! U know? Now that I think about it, you’re positively correct!”

I feel just like Chrisette Michele. This is such an obvious oversight but I’d never thought about it the way Tara did. I will definitely click “like” Wednesday.

     Maybe it’s just cause I’m a little ignorant, I always thought a “nude” bra just meant a bra that you could wear under a white shirt, or some other really pale colour shirt and it wouldn’t be seen.

    I don’t really get the issue here, and that’s probably because I don’t feel I need a nude bra. I’m pretty sure we’re making something out of nothing…again. It’s not like the nudes that are widely available really match anyone. I am curious to know how one dyes clothes to match one’s skin tone.

    Is it really that serious? Is it comfy? Does it hold the girls in place without causing uni-boob? Are my criteria for selecting a bra. As long as it doesn’t show through my clothes color is the least of my concerns.

    I don’t dye my bra’s but i have been buying bras that match my skin tone at Lane Bryant. They have mocha and coffee bras.

    But bras come in various colors and designs, you mean to tell me there isn’t a dark brown bra?

    It’s doing the most.  No, I’ve never dyed my bras to match my skin tone.  What the sister should do is create that company, and bring Holly Peete into the mix.  We black folks just don’t think of ourselves as the creators of anything, even though we come up with bazillion dollar ideas all day long.  We get mad that somebody didn’t think of our idea before us.

    Oh i remember the wonderful day I walked into H&M and saw a bra that was my EXACT skin-tone! I was soo excited. I don’t buy underwear from them usually but this time I did and walked around topless in it for two day at home. It was such an exciting day. Sadly it broke and they no longer have it. Back to wearing beige bras :(
