Sexual Health Myths Even Adults Believe

January 30th, 2012 - By Julia Austin

"Black couple in bed"

You use condoms. You sleep with guys who run in the same social circle as you, so you know who they have slept with. You think you’re being safe. You think you fear what you should fear, and are taking all the right precautions. But, sadly, there are a lot of myths that somehow survived through high school, through college and even into adulthood about sexual health. Like these:

ALL I KNOW IS I PULL OUT BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE!

Teaching your adolescent child to manage their sexuality responsibly is not the same as encouraging sexual experimentation.  It is actually part of our duty as parents.  Simply saying “don’t have sex til you’re married” is not teaching them about their own sexual nature and how mature people control their impulses and behave responsibly with the opposite sex.

These myths are a clear indication of how much misinformation gets passed around, especially among the young.  All the more reason to give them true facts so they can make informed decisions.  Those of us who have daughters have a special obligation to teach them to control their fertility so that they will not have a promising future derailed by a pregnancy at the wrong time.  I’d rather teach my daughter about birth control than have her get pregnant too young out of ignorance of the true facts.

My coworker, who is in her early twenties (I’m 29) did not know what pre ejaculation  was!!!! She  already has a daughter and is being very risky with her partner.  I told her to drop facebook, twitter and worldstarhiphop and goggle sexual education. Yet she claims to be so grown!!!

Just stay the hell away from black women if you don’t want herpes or HIV. Especially the dark sistas…

    • Pat

Actually, the main carriers of STDs are black men. Check the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) website for statistics.

  • MissK

And another thing…getting pregnant seems to be the BEST case scenario when it comes to sexual health these days!…smh

  • MissK

I can’t believe people believe that last one!
What I’ve learned is that basically every sexually active adult had/has/or will have HPV at some point in their lifetime – (most just don’t know it).

  • OH MY!

I was dating a man who told me he wants to remain a virgin until marriage. How sweet. The main reason? He doesn’t want an STD. Ok, I get it. It is a very scary thought. But that does not hamper him from asking me for a blow job!I had to just stop him for a minute. You want a blow job but not sex? “Honey, STD’s do not live solely in the vagina.” That is when our relationship ended. How many blowjobs has he been getting and from who!?! Some people are so dumb.

Glad to see my mama and grandma taught me well. There is no excuse for any woman that is sexually active to not see the gynecologist once a year. You can get an exam, birth control pills, testing for free. And a little research goes a loooong way.

See most people dont dare touch this right here but it happens every single
day and in fact this is the most common way people catch this disease through
someone you trust that has two or more sexual partners.

This is an excellent article & one I will email to my teenage sister.  She is unfortunately at that age where she believes everything a man says.

It amazes me that no one bothers to comment on serious articles such as this one vs. gossip and ratchet mess.  I admire those that did read and comment.  These kids out here today and some adults are delusional, undereducated and misinformed about sex, protection and consequences of risky behavior.  I think too many adults only harp on their teens getting pregnant and not sti/std prevention.  Discuss abstinence, prevention and protection from sex and diseases, emotional aspects, and how this could and will affect them long-term.

Actually the statement about sperm living in your body for up to 72 hours is false. Sperm can actually live up to 5 days before dying. It’s gross but true!

I’m a nurse, LPN and we get the teens in my clinic coming in crying because they didn’t believe they could get pregnant if the boy “pulled out” before the ejac. This became such the normal reason and excuse for the girls that I held my own “debunk the sex myth” seminar for two days going through these you have put and other myths. Needless to say it was effective to some and helpful to others.

    • Pivyque

Did they know that condoms exist? People only think about not getting pregnant and completely forget that STD’s are out there. “Pulling out” MAY keep them from getting pregnant, but it won’t prevent them getting AIDS/HIV.

      • York

Thank-you I’m 20yrs old and I have heard several ppl say they use the pull out method so they can’t get pregnant. Well there still is a chance and pregnancy shouldn’t be your biggest fear but catching any STD should.
