President Obama Can Handle it, But I Can’t

January 26th, 2012 - By Veronica Wells

In the past three, going on four years, you may have noticed something. President Obama can handle it. By it I mean everything his job as President of the United States entails and all the extra, unwarranted, latently or blatantly racist foolishness that goes with it.

Initially, I too became incensed when the President was openly disrespected. Listening to Rep. Joe Wilson call him a liar in the middle of his healthcare speech, watching as “birthers” and Donald Trump demanded that he produce his birth certificate after he was well into his first term, and seeing a protester interrupt his commencement speech at Notre Dame was enough to make my blood pressure rise. Not only would this have been disrespectful for any layperson to experience, but this inexcusable behavior was being directed at the President of the United States. A president the American people elected.

I couldn’t find solace in the situation until I read an article about the president and his mother in the New York Times. It was a very detailed piece, but the part that stuck out to me was this:

“After lunch, the group took a walk, with Barry running ahead. A flock of Indonesian children began lobbing rocks in his direction. They ducked behind a wall and shouted racial epithets. He seemed unfazed, dancing around as though playing dodge ball “with unseen players,” Bryant said. Ann [his mother] did not react. Assuming she must not have understood the words, Bryant offered to intervene. “No, he’s O.K.,” Ann said. “He’s used to it.”

Reading that paragraph was my “aha moment.” After that article, I came to understand, with calming clarity, that President Obama was meant for this. Not only was he meant for it, he is capable of handling the pressures, the criticisms, the racism and the outright disrespect that comes with it.

But notice I said he can handle it; I, on the other hand, cannot.

Even though I continuously refer to that paragraph to keep myself from popping a blood vessel, incidences like yesterday’s exchange on an Arizona tarmac send me spiraling down that dark hole.

I woke up this morning to news that yet another form of disrespect had been hurled at the president, this time from Arizona Governor Jan Brewer.

The president and Brewer already have a rocky relationship because of a book she wrote. In it she says that the president lectured her when she met with him to discuss the Arizona immigration law in 2010.

Yet, Brewer asked to meet with him again and a white house official said: “He’d be glad to meet with her again, but did note that after their last meeting, a cordial discussion in the Oval Office, the governor inaccurately described the meeting in her book.”

As far as we know there is no record of their conversation on the tarmac yesterday, but Brewer and reports mention that her book might have been the point of contention.

Fine, whatever. What gets me about the whole thing is what Brewer said to reporters:

“I felt a little bit threatened, if you will, in the attitude that he had, because I was there to welcome him.”

#CoSign u can tell when a person is out done they react in tha way Brewer did… Hostile, and overly emotional!!!! I respect Our President and I applaud his class in this situation because trust me hes not thinking twice abt this incident and shes restless thinking abt it. She was out of line and I can’t respect her as a person because a woman of her statue should have simply known better. I am highly disgusted with her all together. Where do u get the guts to point your finger in your President’s face and then holler u where threatened?!!!! U hit the nail on the head when u said “Yea she was threatened alright, INTELLECTUALLY THREATENED!!!” humph the nerve of people!!!!

  • A.J.

In all my years of viewing presidents (and mind you, I’ve only seen four), I have never seen such blatant disrespect for the office of President. Even if you don’t agree with all that he’s done, there’s still such a thing as common decency.  Anyone who says that it has nothing to do with racism is mental.  The real issue is that white people are still angry at the idea of a Black President, especially one who is so intelligent, articulate, witty, and extremely calm under fire.  They can’t break Obama, no matter how hard they try.  What’s so disturbing is the fact that they get away with it, time after time.  How dare they!  I can tell you one thing though, if Michelle were there, Brewer would have been out cold.

    • Dreamstate89020

Give me a break, you really think she did that because he was black….people have been in the face of presidents for years. I am not angry that my president is black….I just dont agree with him, like a did numerous other presidents. I personally thought Colin Powell should of run. I think the man is amazing and would of been the best choice of anyone running that year or at anytime.

      • A.J.

She may have had other reasons for being mad at him (his policies, etc.), and she’s entitled to her opinion, but I do not believe that she would have stepped up to him so blatantly if he were white.  There is a difference between disagreement and disrespect.  She could have talked with him calmly and rationally, all while disagreeing with him.  There is a hard, cutting edge to the way that numerous people have treated Obama and his family that has a lot to do with their skin color.

        • Dreamstate89020

No then you never saw how they treated Nixon, and Reagan hell they shot him…..how much more disrespectful can you get of the office of the Presidency? I know there are ignorant people in all genders and all races and all cultures, but I dont think this was a racial thing, I think it was really bad judgement and a case to loose the next election

    HELLO!

    • vwells1

      Goodbye!

  • ElvisWasAHero2Most

I am a huge Barack Obama supporter (as are 99.9999% of Blacks… basically everyone but Herman Cain and Uncle Ruckus, which given the current state of Black Americans you would think his support would be waaay lower, opps, I diverge) and I defend the president daily on Republican Blog sites.  And while yes the president is receiving what is an unprecedented amount of…. things other presidents haven’t dealt with?  Filibusters, proving his citizenship, outright accusations of socialism despite the president being moderate as all hell (which makes liberals such as myself upset I voted for this guy) …. add to it this is the first Black president, (coincidence?  Ehhh Depends who you ask) and it does appear racist.

BUT, think not too long ago, when we democrats (I say we, assuming most of the people on this site are democratic) had to sit through 2 terms of Bush 43, we were livid as can be.  People would compare him to Hitler and Mussolini, claim he plotted 9/11,

I guess my point is, this is the presidency of the United States.  The most powerful job in the world.  No matter who is sitting in the oval office, scrutiny comes with the job, especially in the times of 24 hour news, facebook, twiters, etcetera.  So yes, I do think Obama is receiving more criticism than he deserves, but I can see why believers of smaller government think of Obama as we once thought of Bush.

  • Dreamstate89020

I dont like him and I have had no respect from him since he refused to put his hand over his heart during the pledge to the flag. No one should be disrespectful but they do have the right to disagree with the president

    • Dreamstate89020

This isn’t a black or white, or green or polka dotted thing, this is a “there is a president some people dont like” thing. I didn’t like Nixon, or Reagan or Clinton and they were all white. Why is this a racial issue.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_LPDQRWCX4UVPVSXFDRE2CNE4BQ Jessica

and this is why you dislike him?? that’s so fricken dumb i can’t even process that!!

  • Nicole

I am so glad that someone in this country is talking about the disrespect that this country has for our POTUS and FLOTUS. And Jane Brewer LAWD JESUS in the words of Nick Cannon…..Thank God I’m trying to live right/my cup runneth over. UM UM UM UM UM UM UM!

    • NIcole

      Sorry correction its “Jan Brewer”.

  • http://www.allthatmsjazz.com/ Jasmine W.

I wrote this letter this morning on the Gov. Brewer’s website:

I am writing in regards to the incident between you and President Obama
yesterday. I have read about what took place from your standpoint and as
well as President Obama’s. What I found most disturbing was your lack
of respect and professionalism when you put your finger in his face.
This man holds the highest office in America and for you to disrespect
him in such a childish act IN PUBLIC quite frankly shows your lack of
respect for your position as well as his.  I understand people have
disagreements and arguments but if there was something being spoken that
was that intense you should have kept your cool and resumed the
    conversation in private.

There was a very interesting conversation about this incident on one
of the radio stations that I listen to here in Saint Louis, MO called
the Rickey Smiling Morning Show and he spoke about had it been any other
President such as Clinton or Bush that would not have been accepted and
I do agree. I feel people do not respect the office as much because
there is an African American in charge that you have to answer to.
Quite frankly I will finish this conversation with this last part.

If there is one thing that I fault the President with is being too
nice at times. To me personally you were BLESSED the First Lady wasn’t
there, because if she was, let’s just say I personally think, YOU would
have thought twice before pulling that stunt.

You know it’s funny now everyone is sooo sensitive to Obama. When liberal pundits like Sharpton and Jesse were calling Pres. Bush Chimpy, where were you? Where was all this outrage? And I have heard in MANY black circles much, much worse things said against Bush.

Obama is not the Governor’s Boss. She has a right to tell him off, just like any number of black women are probably being ghetto and loud right now telling someone off that they felt “disrespected” them. Why cant the gov. do that? Because Obama is “the one”? No. He is a CEO just like SHE is a CEO. They are both executives. Matter of fact, he doesnt have as much power as she does as she is a gov. His power is supposed to be restricted because of the constitution.

So please, save your faux outrage for someone else. Either you were outraged when it was done to Bush, or you are not outraged at all.

Answer me one question. When will go from being black americans to being americans?

    • immaguest

Of course she can tell him off. I don’t think anyone’s disputing that, at least I’m not, and I’m sure he’s probably had confrontations worse than what happened between him and Ms. Brewer. The issue is she put her finger in his face. The gesture is condescending. They are adults, he’s not a child that needs to be reprimanded, and she should have handled it as such.
Similar to when Bush had the shoe thown at him. I’m not a Bush fan by any means, but that was uncalled for. There are better ways to get your point across.

      • stpn2me

He walked away from her while she was still talking. THAT was disrespectful too. No one is talking about that. Respect is a two way street. And I doubt anyone on this board would show respect to some who was disrespecting them in person…

        • immaguest

I’m guessing he walked away from her sometime after she pulled the finger, since in the photo he’s still standing in front of her with her finger pointed. So in support of what you said, respect is a two-way street – he stopped showing it to her once she disrespected him.
The fact that he walked away is being mentioned. There is an article and video on cnn.com. Ms. Brewer was interviewed and said that the President walked away from her mid-sentence; however, she never mentioned that she raised her finger. The article that accompanies the video mentions both incidences.

        • ROSETINTEDGLASSES

You are so cute! Respect is a two way street for sure! Question though, if the person coming form the opposite direction puts up a road block are you going to keep going, right into a collision, or are you going to turn around and go back from whence you came?

    • GETREAL

      B—CH PLEASE!!!!!

    • Smacks_hoes

Are you freaking kidding me!!! Since when does a governor have more power than the president. LMAO!!!! Darling how old are you 12? You cnt be serious. I just cnt with you…. This has nothing to do with color or president bush. It’s the fact that the president is the highest power in America. Even thought she
      doesn’t agree with his
opinions or Pov she needs to
      respect his position. Let me
ask you this…if you and your
      boss had a difference of
      opinion would you raise your
voice at him and put you
finger in his face? Hell no
because you wouldnt have a job. You may not respect him but respect his position.

      • stpn2me

I know your liberal school didnt teach you correctly and I dont fault you for that. Yes, Governors have more power than the president over our everyday lives. That is the only power as citizens we have. Power at the LOCAL level. The president isnt the highest power in America. That’s not how it’s supposed to be. Do you know what highest powers are? Dictators. But that most often happens in majority democracies, which you obviously think we are. Learn what type of govt your country actually is (Hint: it’s not a democracy), then we can talk….

Blacks have been brainwashed by the democratic party to look on high in centralized govt to their king for all their libations. That’s not how the U.S. was designed. It was designed for the people to have all power and decisions in their LOCAL areas. That way if California wants to have gays marry, it wont affect N.C. If NY wants abortion, it wont affect Alabama. That’s the way it should be…

And by the way, We are a representative republic…

        • ROSETINTEDGLASSES

I see you are heavily entrenched in the Bush camp… I’m going to leave that alone. I see that you intentionally ignore the given scenario of doing that to your boss. Would it then be unfair to assume that you are unemployed? IMO the scenario doesn’t apply to you because you are obviously not in a position to be fired. To be fair, lets give you another scenario; YOU are the Boss (the face of your business/company) and some one down in the hierarchy (may not answer directly to you…) puts their finger in your face in a very public setting (not the 1st time they’ve conducted disrespectful behaviour where you are concerned). What do you do?
          a) Stand their and take it?
          b) Take it but you’re not staying around for the rest (Obama’s choice)
          c) Getting in a heated discussion?
          d) Fire their ass on the spot (or make life miserable until they quit, etc and so on)? The President of the United States is the FACE of the United States. Think of it as a brand. What message does that send to Global village? One other thing, what was the ethnicity of the cameraman that took this picture and all the media personals that broadcast-ed said picture? The GAP of difference between Bush’s shoe throw and this is so blatant I don’t even begin to comprehend how you could think to compare! This display of disrespect is happening in/on home court. HOME COURT! In the USA, land of the FREE. The so called Land of Equality (now, don’t jump on this last part and start spouting “That’s right “equality”. She can do whatever she wants!”).I think it’s safe to say that one specific group of people where not the only ones offended by Gov. Brewer’s action. Just because madamnoire and other ezines and/or blog sites of similar nature chose to talk about it doesn’t mean people are being sensitive. I’m quite positive pro-Bush members had made their displeasure known then (maybe not… those where tough times, pro- or anti-Bush). To the point. You just can’t show that type of disrespect to a figure head, regardless of your opinion of him. Should NEVER be done. [Parting shot... etiquette school doesn't sound like a bad idea (though you know how the saying goes about old dogs and new tricks).]

        • Kashbmaryd

I’m going to make this simple for you and anyone else that doesn’t know. Gov. Jan Brewer can call up the state police force if an attack happens only in Arizona. Obama can send in the armed forces to Arizona, California, hell even Somalia as long as he has congressional approval. A governor can’t do that. States do have rights, however, if you take the time to read the constitution, it clearly states that the federal government (that’s where individual liberty comes from btw) gets power first. The states get what the federal government doesn’t take. If governors really had more power than the president, this country would be a confederacy of nations not the USA. Glad I could help you with that one.

          • stpn2me

Funny you should say that. We ARE a federation of states. YOU need to look your history up. And yes, any power not GIVEN to the fed govt are reserved by the states. The Federal govt doesnt  “get” power first. Power is given to it.

            Your dictator leanings are showing..

        • HAPAGIRL

I agree with you that there are serious flaws in the thought process of African Americans as it relates to politics, but I have to tell you, your tone is a bit condescending and it detracts from whatever point you were trying to make.  The similarity in the shade of our skin doesn’t mean that we have to share the same political viewpoints, however, I think the point people here are trying to make is simply that the office of the President should be respected. That’s it.  What’s a “liberal school?” Couldn’t practically every University in our country be considered one to some extent? STPN2ME, if you have something to share, then pass that knowledge along. Surely by now you realize that the delivery is as important as the message itself

    • http://twitter.com/Anskylove AJBeezy

I’m confused. When did  Sharpton and Jesse call Pres. Bush “Chimpy” to his face? When did a member of the American Congress interrupt President Bush’s speech and call him a liar? Did President Bush have to get a copy of his transcripts and publish them in national newspapers so we can all rest assured that he graduated from college? Yes, someone threw a shoe at him, but it’s my recollection that it wasn’t an American citizen…so….I must have missed some things.
As many people have said, you don’t have to agree with the President. And we all have a right to disagree and speak our opinion. This blatant and open disrespect is some of the worst I have seen. These aren’t just pundits or candidates going on FoxNews and saying how much they hate what he’s doing, people are outright putting hands in his face. These aren’t just radio interviews and op-ed pieces about performance and poll ratings. A member of the Congress interrupted the State of the Union to call him a liar? Are we at a football game? C’mon son.

Oh…and I am a black woman, but please don’t consider this a form of me acting “all loud and ghetto”. Wouldn’t want you to think that. Nope. :)

    • ROSETINTEDGLASSES

You make my head hurt. You are not looking at all perspectives, just the “African-Americans being sensitive because they got the first black president” (and you are hoping the last… admit it). You are obviously looking at this as a “racial” issue, with you firmly on one side…

I can see you are trying to cover some flaws in your argument, but I can see right through it and so can others.

My feelings were hurt when I saw her finger in his face. But if you notice his face says “This B*tch is crazy” he has that little sly but calm smirk on his face. He is the boss. I wish I would talk to my boss or disrespect her in that manner. I would have been fired so fast. I’m glad he walked away.

  • Tyra

Veronica Wells aka the writer of this piece: You ma’am are a woman after my own heart! You articulated what most of us were thinking but could not find the words to speak out. I found myself thinking “Beutch if you don’t get that finger off his face”…. woooo! I was livid! I don’t like this heffer period. She has made a mockery of our Immigration system along with her BFF Joe Foolish Arpaio. You are right; he is certainly a better man that you or I are because I would have twisted her finger and trampled her racist a** to the ground! Foolery!

Yes yes yes. Miss Veronica nailed it!!! Boy he should try that on African presidents she’ll disappear the next day. As an African I’ve heard stories people disappearing without a trace over things like this. Am not even American but what white people are doing to obama is out of order. This is flat out disrespectful it needs to stop. Black American you need to stand up against this or obama will be the last black president you’ll ever have. I really and hope that you’ll vote to keep him in the office for another 4years. Bush was incompetent and did far worst in his time but i never saw this kind of disrespect

I thank you for your encouraging comments and I absolutely agree with you 100%. You can not imagine how hard it is to watch him be treated that way and not be able to write through the skies that it needs to stop immediately. Sometimes I wish he would go off on them one time and then return to that calm and collected man.

Respect the Office. Regardless of your political opinion, always “Respect the Office”.  I am absolutely sure there are people in our daily life we do not care for on a social level, at work, at school and at play. If you deal with those people on a professional level you keep it there. Your like or dislike should  never cause you to disrespect anyone. We have apposable thumbs people.

    • Msgonzo10

Agree 1000%. I didn’t like George Bush or his politics but I respected the Office of the President of the land that I love and that respect should transcend politics.

I’m willing to bet that when she put her finger in his face is probably when he walked away mid-conversation. He excused himself from a disrespectful situation. I don’t blame him. But of course we won’t hear that in the media if it’s true, we’ll only hear that he was being disrespectful by walking away from her.

  • Sugar_Spice

I appreciate that excerpt from the article you shared because it gave me a better understanding.  I come from a multi-cultural family in rural Ohio where all I heard were racist remarks on a daily basis.  Now I work in an environment with a bunch of classiest rich snobs & sometimes I just can’t handle it.  With that said, Obama has faced far more adversity than I ever have & I applaud him for handling it all with grace & charisma.

  • Love_Sexy

People have dispected Presidents in the past with their comments however this is the worse I have ever seen the public behave so rudely toward the leader of our country….You might not agree with him however atleast respect his position…..Ricky Smiley stated on the radio this morning how Obama can’t express what he want to really say because of his position…..Furthermore we as black people need to speak up for him to show this will not be tolerated because everybody else does when it happens to a President…..He is right!

  • Candacey Doris

Even when you don’t like someone you should respect their position. No official should ever be so rude to the President. This woman’s lac of respect shows just what kind of person she is.
