7 Underrated Hollywood Actors

January 26th, 2012 - By jaebi

Adequate representation of black people and culture in TV and film is a well-chronicled fight in America but most people forget why. If there’s one thing the world can stop producing right this second and still get along fine, it’s actors. So this isn’t as much about numbers as it is about impact.

It’s vital that black people are well represented in film because of the awesome power of moving pictures. The normal human brain is wired to believe what you see, above all else. For centuries, people could reliably believe what was before their eyes i.e. if you see a flying man, then men must be able to fly. But that all changed when movies were invented.

Now you’re forced to cope with images, many more vivid than actual memories, that are merely figments of a producer’s imagination. On a cognitive level, you know that you’re watching TV, and that it is not reality. But on a deeper, sensory level, your brain is processing those images as knowledge and experience, just like always.

Enter millions of Americans watching black people robbing, killing, rapping or serving on TV, all day, every day. Add that to the fact that most of them are white and it’s obvious these TV/Film watchers are going to have fcuked up knowledge and experience of black people.

Why go into all this to bring you a list of Underrated Hollywood Actors?

(A) Reminders are always helpful and (B) when minorities are lumped into a category of an industry already divided by genres and generic award systems, they end up fighting for what’s left. Too often black actors are seen as a homogeneous group rather than unique and talented professionals.

These next few actors are underrated because they forced America to cope with marvelously diverse images of black people. And that is what adequate representation in Hollywood is all about. First up:

Your list should include the incomparable Giancarlo Esposito! He’s the King of the Chameleons and an extremely talented brother.

    Jesse Williams and Daniel Sunjata

I don’t think Mackie is underrated. He’s relatively new to the game and still gets some plum roles (Opposite Mark Whalberg). But Idris Elba seems to be cast in only stereotypical roles. I would love to seem him do something outside the box.

  • zindile

Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. He was Mr Eko in lost and was in Oz but he got me in Get Rich…his character Majestic took over that movie. He scared me.

  • Ncottlesadams

Though he’s doing more Broadway now, David Alan Grier should be on this list.  The In Living Color schtick notwithstanding, he has some awesome dramatic chops that not many have been able to see or appreciate.  (Currently on Broadway with Porgy and Bess the Musical–support him and the rest of the cast if you can!)

  • Krystal

Great list! I agree with adding Mackie. Would love to see actresses list soon :-)

omar epps…ABSOLUTELY UNDERRATED.  the brutha is good and doesn’t bow down to white hollywood.  good thing for him and his family that house has been so lucrative.

Should have added Anthony Mackie to the list!! He was awesome in The Night Catches Us with Kerry Washington!!

I got that on my queue in Netflix.  Anthony Mackie…hollywood don’t know what to do with him.  Like Omar, he won’t bow either.

    • Sugar_Spice

Yes Yes Yes!!!!!! How can I forget, he was amazing in The Hurt Locker & The Adjustment Bureau.  He was also on the cover of Vogue last year with the top rising young stars in Hollywood.

    • Ncottlesadams

My HOMEBOY Anthony Mackie! New Orleans WILL NEVER bow down!  He and Wendell Pierce are among the actors representing for the 504!

I can’t argue about this list at all. Every one of these men have played some stellar roles.

  • FromUR2UB

    Good list!

  • Ange248

Chiwetel Ejiofor is a brilliant actor, truly talented. I would add Idris Elba to this list although he received a Golden Globe recently, I feel he should have won at least 5 Oscars by now as his acting is second to none. I think he needs a role to play like Nelson Mandela (I heard a rumour that he might be playing this role?) to win his Oscar. Idris Elba is truly a titan of an actor and is unsurpassed in terms of ability, presence and charisma!

    • Love_Sexy

      I second that for both!

he’s not gonna win an oscar for being Nelson, probably for a pimp, or crackhead. You know how they roll. But its wishful thinking.

hello…its a shame but hello lol

  • Etomi

Please don’t forget Mekhi Phifer.  He, too, is under-rated, and is a fine actor, in my humble opinion.

MN I am glad you wrote an article on these actors because you are right they are not getting the recognition they deserve….Some of them should be getting Oscar nominations for their work…..I have always felt Don Cheadle, Jeffery Wright and Chiwetel Ejiofor were outstanding actors…I have seen them in some movies that I thought would help them to blow up but it never happened……..Typical example of how Hollywood promote who they want in the business

    • http://twitter.com/yoyodre Mario DeAndré Brooks

Don Cheadle was nominated for Hotel Rwanda

  • Sugar_Spice

I was watching “Dexter” a couple of months ago with Mos Def on there.  His character was telling a story about a crime he committed.  I looked over & said to my husband “wow, I felt like he was telling the story to me personally”.  He has the ability to draw you in & hold your attention.  Don Cheadle is amazing as well.  Side note: Has anyone seen Don Cheadle as Captain Planet on funny or die? Hilarious

    • Love_Sexy

Agree with you about Mos Def too.

    • Nikki

Hey Sugar Spice, what movie is that with Denzel telling the story?

      • Sugar_Spice

I know for sure it was a TV movie (HBO or Showtime) but I can’t recall if it’s “Something the Lord made” where he was the first black heart surgeon or “Lakawanna Blues” where he was the bandleader.

        • IllyPhilly

          Both

  • IllyPhilly

Ving Rhames!!! He’s surpassed Denzel in acting I don’t care what ya say. He has played a plethora of characters!!! Love ya! Not too bad of a list.

    • Love_Sexy

I agree with you about Ving Rhames he is an outstanding actor.

    • Candacey Doris

I like Rhames but he is NOT better than Denzel.

      • IllyPhilly

Denzel plays the same role over and over. Love him, but His best role to me outside of Malcolm X (the greatest portrayal of any historical figure IMO) was Bleek in Mo’ Better Blues.

        • Pahleeze

I disagree…Denzel played a therapist in Antwan Fisher and a defiant soldier in Glory…a dirty cop in Training Day. They are all different now I can agree that he has played a police officer one too many times. However he has played a troubled father in John Q and a motivational teacher and mentor in Great Debators all of which are outstanding performances.
Ving Rhames is a great actor who is underrated but I cannot say he is better than Denzel.

          • http://www.facebook.com/jcsnmbr1 Stephan A. Baker

Co-sign…and now Denzel’s got this new movie about to drop that looks like its gonna be good.  I like his edgy characters best!

        • JustSaying_IMFO

Love Rhames, but really he is the epitome of the an actor who plays the same role over and over – big, tough guy with a soft heart. Though, there’s also big, tough guy with a soft heart whose intelligence is underestimated.

        • Torlando2006

I must agree Denzel plays the same role over and over again.
If you look at 5 roles 3 of them will be VERY similar.. or he plays them all the
          same

      Holiday Heart.

It’s hard to compare the two.  They are both great and in their own lanes.
